Talk me out of a 308

It's a long action? Buy it and make it what it truly wants to be....a 30-06. Then you won't have to worry about flinging 200gr bullets at walking speed. Then you can fling 190s above 2800fps and laugh at 1300yds instead of being like the little engine that could.
Fuck, what cock block you are

I only own 2 .308’s, but I’m pretty new to the 30 cal game. I’m more of a 7mm guy, I may own more than one.

i'd argue that practicing with a .308 can make you better with everything else that recoils less.
you also have to be better at reading wind with a smaller margin for error.
it covers up nothing and exposes everything.
plus everyone should own a .308 in case everything goes to hell and you have to scavenge ammo. jmo.
I have done the same with 7mm Rem Mag in the past . Shoot the 7mm for two weeks and 223 is mouse farts .

I can't believe you have to question whether to have a 308 ?
You almost need a 308. To many are caught up in all the latest and best but don't forget what got you here.
I have 3 -308's, I like my 1 in 12 twist, shoots those little 155 bthp like laser beams for me, and that's all that matters.

I own two 308s. But if you follow that train you must also have a 30-06, 30-40 Krag, and a 45-70 Govt.....I ain’t arguing!

308s are for people who wear white new balances and mom jeans. If Obama shot LR he would shoot a 308
comments like this are from people who just started shooting.
Most of the older shooters you described shoot 6br or 6.5x284 from a sparkly painted BR or 50 coat-of-clear F Classer.
Duh.
🤣

It's taken several years and sever barrels of improved calibers but I'm back in love with my 308.

Am I doing that right? I dunno, I shoot a .308, so I must be older than dirt... :ROFLMAO:

IMO, .308 is the ultimate training round. If you don’t have one, you should. If I could only have one centerfire bolt action rifle, it would probably be a .308.

I have a 308 but prefer the 308 non belted magnum (7.62 x 63) It's about the best all around cartridge and runs the 190 Berger at 2860 from a 22 inch barrel. JMHO!!lol

Do it, 308 is one of my favs.

If you can buy a smithed up trued up 308 for 700 bucks and you don't buy it, you are crazy.
Buy it, shoot it, and you will be happy.
I've had several 308 rifles and have given 2 away to my buddies kids. Those kids have taken several animals with them. Including 2 oryx, elk, and deer. They kill them just fine....

308 is an evil piece of shit! Oh Ill just get and shoot it out and get a 6.5
5000 rounds later still holds 1/4moa groups and the throat looks unmolested.
I had the bolt camming surface wear off from all the shooting :)

What you do today is most likely not what you'll be doing down the road.

The 308 is more than just one chambering. With a barrel change, it can be .243 Win, 260 Rem, 7-08 Win, 338 win, or 358 Win. That's a fairly vast spread of downrange energy delivery options.

Most other chamberings don't allow such a wide range of choices. In nearly all cases, the rest of the rifle still works fine after the barrel swap.

I keep and load for a limited number of chamberings. .223, 6.5G, 260, 308, and 30-06. The 30-06 is for when the distance and energy of the 308 becomes marginal, and the 6.5g serves the same purpose for the 223. The 260 is the one for the more serious reach out and touch. I also shoot handguns, and 9mm does all I need a handgun to do.

My 308's are a pair, a 24" Savage 11VT with upgrades, and a 20" PSA PA-10 with upgrades. My keep in case ammo is IMI, the rest is handloads.

I don't stockpile ammo. I make it up in necessary quantities for specific events and intentions; ones that I can fit on a calendar. I shoot it up accordingly. I like my ammo to be fresh.

Dudes that can’t see the benefit of a 308 (time and place dependent) are usually the ones who can’t perform on command. 🤷🏻‍♀️

So, most of my shooting is done at 2 matches... and then practicing for those matches.
match 1: 50-500 yards.
match 2: 400-1015 yards

I’ve used a 223, grendel and my 6.5 bolt gun at match one.. all we’re fine. The semi auto 223 was beast, except when gusts of wind came through. Also did well with my 6.5

Match 2, strictly my 6.5 bolt gun.

ive been wanting a 308 for match 1, more energy than the 223 And still very cheap to load for. I have 600 pieces of brass, 200-250 168gr bullets, 8# of H4895.... But I’m feeling like since I have the 223 and the 6.5, the 308 is kind of left without a home.

my friend, whom is a smith, has a 308 long action he built, said he would sell it to me for $700. In a stockys stock, trued action, shilen barrel. Less than 500 rounds fired. Has some kind of switch lug on the barrel, expensive ass bottom metal (don’t recall brand)

he wants $700 for me.... ugh!
Do I buy the rifle and go 7 saum and scrap the 308 idea... or what?
match 1 is right in the .308 wheelhouse, especially with the 155 class bullets.

likely i'm an outlier but i really do not like the recoil characteristics of the .308...yes it's comparatively less expensive and readily available but not worth the abuse in my experience.

i much prefer to work on technique with a more forgiving round be it a .223, .222, .22lr or a 6.5 variant.

(if you have a 6.5 already i see little justification for a .308....unless of course you want to re-barrel it to 6.5)

Abuse from a 308?
A 308 with a brake feels like a 223. Even without a brake, what abuse are we talkin about?
Fundamentals are fundamentals. You should be able to apply them regardless of the system.

10000%

recoil shows you the flaws in your technique

everyone has perfect technique shooting a 22lr

get them on a 338 or 300wm and it goes to shit real quick

people confuse hitting the target with competency and skill

Now why would I want to do that? Lol

Dont hide behind that metric crap....its ok, let them laugh, bring that 06 out of the closet.
We have an 06 owners support group here if you are ever in the area.
Wear it with pride bro.

listen to the other voices in your head you know you want to buy a 308 buy it already give in and start enjoying it . Stop dicking around and do it already . Have fun and I hope you love it they are fun .

I’ll agree with everything but the “everyone has perfect technique” part.

Once had a dude at a job interview tell me that “he’s good with a bolt gun” after he failed (multiple times on each) with an M4, G19, M249, M240, and M203 during the quals. Each time he failed, he would just tell everyone it wasn’t a bolt gun...and each time I would chime in that “fundamentals are fundamentals.”

If you do your job (aka apply the fundamentals) weapon system and caliber becomes irrelevant. The trick is reaching that point.

Dont forget a good die set for .308..... some brass.... projectiles...

And in a single post, Greg Legitimized the Savage. Because if Greg has one, it's a worthy rifle! Few folks here know their stuff as well.

Go back and read his post. Every word of it. Twice.

And you will get .308.
