So I found a guy with a Premier scope in really great condition. He’s looking to sell it for 1800 and won’t budge! I know the history on them and Tangent doing some warranty work if they can on them and if not the offer you 1k towards their scopes. Anyone in here with experience with them wondering if it’s worth the chance to try it out!

Hi,

Not sure it is worth it IMO....
Lets say something happens to it and it IS one of the ones TT can work on...then you have to deal with all that hassle.
Lets say something happens to it and it is NOT one of the ones TT can work on...you are then out 1800$ to get 1000$ off new scope in which you are then starting the transaction in the negative; only to put out more money to cover the rest of the TT price.

Depending on the timeframe in which that exact 5-25x56 PR was manufactured it could be one of the early ones that were NOTORIOUS for locking up in cold weather...meaning you could turn the turrets all you want and the POI would not change.

Sincerely,
Theis

I decided against it I messaged a guy a few weeks back about a Swarvoski x5i 5-25 and he actually responded last night $1800.00 shipped so I’m gonna going with the Swarovski. I already have the regular Swarovski x5 and love it other than the bulky turret. Thanks for your input much appreciated.

I have multiple heritage 5-25x scopes, most I bought new, two I acquired second hand, and bc I worry about the warranty issue, I make sure they are cleaned and maintained on the regular. If I’m just going to the range it’s not a big deal, but after matches I am especially diligent about about removing debris and checking for any issues with the turrets. As I’ve found out, that is really the most likely issue as long as proper torque values on rings or mounts are maintained.
I will loosen the tool less adjustment, back out the set screws, remove turrets, brush away any sand or dust that gets under the caps, and use a vacuum to pull out any other debris that might have gotten into the mechanicals. A small amount of synthetic grease is applied to the oring helping to maintain sealing, and give smooth (for mtc type) clicks. I also removed the batteries on all my units just so there is no chance of corrosion on the terminals.

IMO the price is fair, provided it’s in relatively good condition and comes with the PR branded tenebraex caps. At most your getting TT quality glass for little more than razor cost. But it comes at the risk of not having a warranty to back it up. Personally I’d be fine as long as the scope doesn’t have bad ring marks and seller can verify no tracking or focus issues before buying.

And yes I heard of others having issues with these scopes in extreme cold, but as far as my experience, I’ve ran mine in single digit to triple digit weather during matches, wind blowing snow sideways to dust and sand swirling, and not had any issues. I credit that to how well they are built and the level of maintenance they receive.
I abosolutely love my heritage scopes and would only consider selling for ZCO or TT, both of which are double the cost of what your looking at spending.

Tangent Theta is not doing any work on premier scopes. They give 1k credit toward a TT scope if not sold in ATI’s distributor network, 80% of retail if sold in-network. It may be worth it if it’s a second generation premier. These are identifiable via the markings on the parallax knob and slip clutch system on the windage and elevation turrets. The first gen didn’t have these features.

The primary issue with these scopes mechanically was/is the parallax binding, usually caused by tightening the ring cap screws too much. They require a max of 15 inch lbs. This issue was more prevalent in the early vs late premiers.

This is not 100% true. TT will still warranty Premier scopes. They have a list of serial numbers that they will still service. Reason I know is that the illum on mine just stopped working. I contacted Ted on the tech line at TT last Thursday and he said it is one of the several they warranty.

That’s interesting. I know they still warranty the scopes but didn’t know they are still performing repairs under warranty. I talked to Crystal Turko, CS manager about two years ago and she stated they aren’t doing any more such repairs due to parts exhaustion, only trade- in credits. Glad to hear that’s not the case.
