6.5 grendel v 7.62

I have a palmetto 6.5 grendel upper in 12 inch. Would it be worth it to get an ak that shoots 7.62 with around the same barrel or just stockpile on 6.5 grendel amd get a dot for my upper.

Plinking, defensive, hunting, inside of 150 yards

My personal opinion is get an AK... If you like the 7.62x39, the AR platform isn't the best for it... The AK is. For the Grendel, I don't have a shorty, but it's far superior than the 7.62 in the longer barrel in accuracy and long range ballistics. If you want to keep the AR, why not get a 300BO? They are supposed to be super similar to the 7.62x39 ballistically, and made for the AR platform. Just my .02

Why the heck would you buy a new gun when you don’t even have ammo or an optic for one you already own? What a ridiculous question. Why would you own two useless guns. Make one useful.

As others have posted - for 7.62x39 just get a good AK. It will be more dependable than an AR in the same caliber. If you buy an AK do your homework and not just buy what is readily available.

I wouldn't get a 7.62 upper for ar. I'd buy an ak, but from everything I've read out of a 12 inch the grendel is the same as an ak in the same length

I like the 6.5G but ammo cost is much higher than 7.62x39 and much less common. Without a doubt the 6.5G would be the better performer but the 7.62 would be more utilitarian.

The link about is $440 for 1k of steel case 6.5g... that's full panic price. Unfortunately that is what is available.... I did see eld for $1 round shipped/delivered a week or so back. It is readily available like much of the hunting ammo. I adopted grendel but now there is a good chance that we could see no more imported ammo in the very near future... as in forever. I could just reload for it as it is a hunting caliber (for me) but that destroys the argument for several calibers... x39 would disappear from popularity if it becomes 15% more expensive than 556.

Weird times... the grendel gives you a lot more range and potential accuracy than the x39 in practical terms.

To contribute something that actually pertains to the OP's post; I think that there are far more benefits than drawbacks to owning at least one rifle chambered in 7.62x39.

That being said, I also believe that aside from urban combat (inside 100 yards), that the 6.5 Grendel is generally going to offer a few more advantages on an 'overall' platform.

Yeah, from what I've seen its about double the foot pounds from 5.56 and could defeat barriers better. While I do believe shot placement is king, the power difference could be a solid plus.

I wouldn't go "double" on the energy numbers, but solid ballpark would be around a 50 percent increase.

I wont start blabbering about bullet construction, but I will support the power difference in killing things such as hogs. I ran an 89 percent recovery rate on hogs shot this year with the 6.8, and probably a bit better than that overall in my life. With the 5.56 and some decent bullets, I lose about 20-25 percent of hit pigs off the property I'm hunting.

Your Grendel is all one would need...if you can find ammo. Really the best thing about the 7.62x39 IMO is the cost and general popularity of ammo.
