Time again for another wonderful but frustrating Topstraps Longrange (midrange) Rimfire Match at my range. I'll be here from Friday thru Sunday (September 11th, 12th and 13th.) from about 9:00 AM till it starts to get dark. Don't wait until evening hoping for calm winds and hope to shoot since there may not be enough time to finish up the ones in line. Hopefully the weather will co-operate but the firing line is covered if it rains.

Match will be the same as last month since everyone seemed to like it. 85 targets worth 1 point each. Distances will be 25, 37, 50, 62, 76, 87, 100, 112, 125, 137, 150, 162, 175, 187 and 197 yards of varying sizes and shapes. I will allow up 5 sighters the shooter can use at whatever stages they wish. I'll also let each shooter take a couple shots to check their zero before starting. If a shooter is struggling with settings or is new to this game I'll do my best to accomodate and get them on target thru the match. It's about having fun and also hitting targets.

There is a max cost limit of $8.00/50 rounds for the 22 rimfire ammo based on either Champion Choice website or Ammoseek, no tuners or any of that other Benchrest type stuff allowed and no fancy Benchrest style rests. Only bipods or sandbags to support the gun. Any 22 rimfire gun/scope is allowed. I am still trying to keep this from coming an equipment race with high end custom guns and scopes. There are other local matches the really high end equipment and ammo can compete in against other high end equipment where they can battle it out for being top dog. I try to keep my matches challenging and fun and so far it's been working out pretty good with most everyone hitting a lot of the targets with a few smaller/harder/gamble ones that separate the top shooters.

A donation of $10.00 per each entry and you can re-enter if you wish but have to get in line again. The match winner will get a free entry at the next shoot and there will be at least 1 $20.00 drawing and usually another based on number of entries. Lately it has been two drawings and might even get to three the way things are going. The range officer/scorer has final say, we tend to favor the shooter if there is a question about a nicker which is counted. When the target is painted I'll check to verify a hit/nick for scoring.

The firing line is covered and there are two benches so two shooters can shoot the course of fire together. I also have a set of 4moa circles, one at each distance for the metallic sight shooters. If there are 5 scoped targets on a stage then the peep sight shooters shoot their target 5 times. They look large until you look at them without magnification. They are very doable and add a new challenge to this longrange game and let them compete with the scoped guys with very similiar scores so bring out those metallic sighted rimfires. Bring out those peep sight guns and enjoy old school rimfire shooting and ringing distant steel.

100 rounds should be sufficient with 85 targets and some type of special final stage to challenge your skills and also a few checking zero rounds.

Any questions my email is [email protected]

Allow about an hour to shoot the course, if that is too long then on the first weekend of the Month Butch McCort has a 50 round match that only takes about 20 minutes to shoot. Personally I like to shoot once I sit down and get my monies worth. I'm trying to figure out a way to have a special timed even that runs with the regular precision event for those shooters that think they're smooth and fast. I might even put up a bounty to be paid if last years score is beat. All you great shots that are accurate, smooth and fast need to get practiced up and see if you can become the new King and show that you can be all three at the same time.

Hope to see everyone.

So are you going to turn back someone who shows up with a Vudoo with a NF ATACR on it?

There are plenty of those here already and they don't dominate the match. I limit ammo cost, no fancy BR front rest or tuner and bipods and bags are used. Bring your V-gun and give it a try. There are competitors with $7500+ in their rigs and still have to work to shoot a decent score. Matches are still won with Savages and old Single Shots, Mother Nature has a way of equalizing everyone.

Better yet, next month I'll try to have the timed match, 85 targets withv100 rounds in a bowl. One 10 round magazine only, at the buzzer shoot each target progressing farther out till you either hit all the targets, run out of ammo or the 20 minute time limit runs out.

Score is calculated based on targets hit, rounds left over and time used. Similiar to comstock, will probably have a cash prize if the previous best score is beat.

That's what I have been shooting there. I still have to shoot it straight to hit targets. ;) Wind, ammo and shooter ability count for a lot. You can't buy a win here. :)

You can't buy a win anywhere. That's why this guy's "rules" rub me the wrong way.

He sounds like someone who got thumped by a better shooter who happened to have "fancier" gear then took his ball and went home.

Think what you want, bring your toys and see where you place. Lots of my shooters have upgraded to V-guns with NF scopes, I'd say at least a forth use them if not more. I did not once mention a limit on guns or scopes allowed. Even those aren't the most expensive used.

My range, my matches and my rules and the scores show that a fancier rig isn't always the winner. My matches aren't geared for the high end no rules shooter which usually start to dwindle in attendance as time goes on with the same few dominating.

Scores are close, targets are challenging and on a good day any of at least a dozen shooters may win. Some might shoot a $8000.00 rig or it could be a $1000 setup.
