Ooooof. Just got back from a public range here in MI. I rarely attend this range since it only has 25/50/100 benches, but since I had a little time today and this place is so close and free, I figured I’d go shoot some groups.

the RO there had something to prove and was bored. Hovered around me asking me why I’m shooting expensive ammo and have expensive setups, tried telling me his $300 dollar rifle and wolf ammo shoots just as well and that it doesn’t matter to make a difference and is a waste of money.... I told him hell, with that logic, then there’s no difference between a pinto and Ferrari either right, just a waste of money?.... he didn’t like that.

some new shooters came and he had new victims... they were having trouble getting on target at 100yds & asked me some advice..

Mr RO Fudd came over and started saying they want his advice (so I went back to shooting)... over heard him saying he’s been shooting for 50yrs and a retired trooper, he knows what he’s talking about. He instructed them and took them over to the 25yds range to borescope. He told them: “we want to sight in 4-5in high at 25yds so that the bullet drops right in at 100yds” when they moved over next to me at 100yds they all couldn’t figure why they couldn’t see impacts on paper at 100yds.. he said the shooter must’ve been flinching and he then tried (shooting their gun and ammo) After he couldn’t get on paper, he said your rings and base are probably loose, something’s not lining up...

I kept plugging away shooting bug holes with my “over priced not needed expensive hand loads and setup”

I had a run in similar at the range about 10 years ago. Not a RO just a guy who liked to brag up his shooting right before he actually shot. However in this case I was the poor on site

He had a 243 (decent setup rifle much more expensive than mine) and was overly proud of this “tank” brake he recently installed on it. Looked similar to the brake on the Armalite AR50A1 and looked stupid as all hell on that rifle

We both used the same 100 yard target as we were just sighting in and it was only the two of us there.

He printed a group about 1 MOA and gave me the whole rundown of how he achieves such precision.

I followed that up with a 5 shot group you could cover with a nickel from my Savage 10 308 with a 4-16 Vortex Viper HS.

Now I’m 100% in the “buy the best equipment you can” club. My equipment would reflect that today compared to then.

But damn it sure felt good to print that group in that exact circumstance

🙄Some people can't help themselves.
I just smile and, say something like "Better get to it, have a good one aye?"
They usually get the hint.
He was on his way out after my Ferrari and pinto comment.. unfortunately he lead some new shooters astray with his sound advice of “sighting in high at 25yds to drop the bullet in at 100”
Never make fun of another persons equipment.
It would be really embarrassing to be beat by a $300 rifle and cheap ammo.
No doubt, I don’t make fun of anyone’s equipment.... ever... that’s a dick move. However when you dog on someone saying your $300 rifle shoots as good as my $5000+ rifle (which it may) then turn around and tell people to “sight in a couple inches high at 25yds to drop the bullet in at 100yds”... it’s pretty apparent you have no idea what the fuck you’re talking about.

I overheard two guys with their Benchrest rifles call my AXMC an AR looking piece of shit. Some people just are stupid.

Sad thing is there groups were shit for the money it appeared they had in them. But I was no better by thinking that either.

Hell yeah!! That’s awesome! Probably felt super good. I don’t know what this guys problem was. All I did was show up to shoot some paper & enjoy the day. Minute I pulled my gun out of the bag as he was standing right there watching me he started chirping me about not needing that stuff and how I was wasting my money.

I’m not going to lie that was one of the best groups I shot with that rifle and I felt like a God after shooting it just because of the circumstance

Several things we need to remember

1) Those that frequent SH and actually shoot choose good equipment. Based on reliability, our needs and recommendations from guys here and in the real shooting world. Huge advantage over the guy who buys the latest/greatest and when asked how it works replies by reciting the infomercial he watched for it

2) Most troopers suck at shooting 🤪 It’s the local LEO guys you gotta watch 😁

To most people a Magpul is equal to an atlas, savage to an AI and Nikon to a Nightforce. And to 95% of those people that RO talks to everyday....they don’t know the difference either

It's probably the highlight of his week, being in charge at the range.
He definitely had a big ol’ boner walking around... large and in charge. He gave me the whole run down when I showed up...told me that as long as I listen to him and do what he says we won’t have any problems.

This brings up the time a guy next to me when I was zerio’ing on orange pasters at 100 on my target backer : “ aim at the red paster in the upper right corner, I said “I don’t see a red paster”. He says “the military doesn’t use the word orange because red is faster and easier to identify”..... lol.
Remember I never solicited any help spotting. I can see just fine on my own. He insisted to spot for me at 100yds. I ignored him and went about my business.

After his comment of “sight in a couple a inches high at 25yds to drop the bullet right in there at 100yds” I knew he had no idea what he was talking about. Felt bad watching that dude and his buddy waste ammo blasting away trying to figure out why they were off at 100yds and the RO saying it’s probably his rings/scope base. Wonder how many others he’s lead astray.

I’ll bet he sells a ton of rings/mounts for the local sporting goods store with his great advice

Where you located in MI. I’m a Yooper

There's the age old saying.....

"Those who cannot do.....

teach others their ineptitude so they can carry on their stupidity when their genes cannot."

By the time they were all done their off target wasted ammo probably exceeded the cost of your overpriced equipment.

Ahhhh God’s country!! Say Ya to da UP eh. That’s livin! I’d love to move up there, unfortunately there’s no ATC airports up there where I could go. Marquette is contract. I have a cabin right by Kitch-iti-kipi up there. I live in SE MI

Sounds like an old acrchery range that used to be around here.
Anything off always required a new set of arrows.

Get dirty looks when I use a lighter to straighten out my fletching when they get all wonky “just cut them off and glue on new ones”....this is free and works.

Someone get some subtitles for this guy 😆

No doubt, I felt bad for them watching them (RO included) blast away their/his ammo trying to figure out the problem. Couldn’t help but think all the other people he’s lead astray there.

Shit I didn’t know you could do that. I have a couple fucked up fletchings from punching through worn out targets. Just use the heat from the flame and they’ll straighten out?

WTF, hahahaha! If I i needed to orient someone onto something orange, I’m going to say orange. What a retard

Yeah slowly wave a lighter a few inches below and it’ll tighten the material back up.

Don’t use the flame directly on the plastic obviously. It won’t be perfect but it won’t be a ruffles chip cross section either.

I bore site at 50 yds. First one visible. Second to third shot on bullseye. I've never heard of his ass hatted method.

Public ranges in MI, holy crap that takes me back. @HenryTheAce do they still have the dumbass 1 round in the gun rule? Had a real nice range near lansing back in the day for my college poor ass but that 1 round thing was beyond stupid (specially in my garand).

Anywho, had my own idiot RO today--Wife wanted to shoot her PPS, so cool, I get to spend some time with her and her tight pants. New RO decides that he has to handle EVERY DAMN GUN during the cease fire. Literally walked down the line, picked up everyone's gun, flipped it over (even if it was already locked and open as per cease fire rules). Even pulls out his carry item to compare something in his mag. Not much I could do about it, but man it pissed me off. I just had my walther, nothing special, but DONT TOUCH MY DAMN GUN. Ugh. Gettin old and tolerance for stupid ROs is low--even if it is 5 mins from house. The older guys who know me, just put me on a lane to myself and wave me through...

And if those bastards even eye one of my pieces of brass to sweep up.....

I would have stepped in right there... no reason for new shooters to get frustrated and start wasting money trying to buy equipment to fix a problem that doesn’t exist

Lol luckily he wasn’t brass gobblin’ing me! That would really piss me off though. Handling my firearm when clearly the action is open and mag removed. Sometimes they just like to swing their dick around and show everyone that they’re in charge I swear.

the range I went to today has a 5 in the mag maximum but 6 seconds between each shot rule.. dumb.

I should’ve no doubt. I regret not doing so. After I got him all rattled with my Ferrari/Pinto comment and when I first showed up to the range he gave me his speech of “rules are I’m in charge, listen to what I say and do and we won’t have any problems yada yada yada” I about had enough of the joker and couldn’t stand to be around him anymore.

Although it costs, our range is really nice with pistol, 100, 200, and goes to 600 yds and we are all ROs - that is watch others and guests. Really nice not to have an RO. So I’m shooting and an old (ok I’m old and they were older!) couple are setting up to shoot pistols on a 200 yd section that clearly says rifles only and no target stand at less than 100. So they set up at 25 yards on a wet field for a club whose last range was shut down due to rounds ricocheting over the berm!! I nicely stop them, point out they are being recorded, and point out the sign. “But the pistol range is too wet”...sorry. They left. I hate RO but come on!
