That may be true, I am not going to rehash it, but there are reasons to do it nonetheless that have nothing to do with turning yourself into a serf or whatever.

1. Fear of repercussions
2. Ignorance and/or stupidity
There are other reasons. The same reason you open doors for women, give seats up to the elderly etc.

I'll have to disagree with you, respectfully. I am sure as hell not going to jeopardize the business license of a small business because I don't want to wear a mask, or to make somebody more uncomfortable than necessary if I can take on a bit of discomfort myself. I'll judge people from a distance, but in the moment, I'd prefer to take on a small burden, no matter how irrational, over placing it on the shoulders of somebody else.
Isn’t the real problem the fact that acting rationally and not playing make believe could cost a man his business? Isn’t it a shame that licenses are used by the state solely for revenue and control? Isn’t it a shame that the vast majority of Americans never educated themselves concerning these face coverings or even bothered to ask the state to prove what they are advising? Isn’t it a shame that the populace didn’t push back when it was as simple as just acting normal?

There are a lot of "real" problems, not just one. And, quite frankly, while I am not a believer in the large scale effectiveness of masks, for reasons I have outlined here, I also do not subscribe to your "educated" theory either. But the main point stands. I would prefer to do something I felt was stupid than to make somebody else uncomfortable. That is a free choice. Our points of view differ, but being able to take at face value that it is a choice would be the correct sentiment here.
The point isn't really whether it would happen, but whether they feared it would. I couldn't live with myself for putting my comfort over their fear for their livelihood. Things were hard enough for small businesses.

It's still my free choice. Their fears may be handed down by the government, but that is separate.
I will give you a similar example that is more politics free. I am Jewish. If I go to friends houses that are Christian, or the Mennonite restaurant for fried chicken, and they want to say Grace, I join them. Obviously, it is not something I hold as very important, and there are all sorts of moral, political and religious issues wrapped up in it from them, so I do it along with them, because it is the right thing to do. I could, like others, step away to the bathroom, or mumble peas and carrots or whatever, but to me, it is the respectful thing to do, not matter that Christ means nothing to my understanding of the world.
Your example was a free choice. Now if you said Grace because your friends would arrest you or fine you $1000 if you didn’t then it is no longer a free choice. You would have been persuaded by coercion and you saying Grace would be conformity out of fear of the consequences. A choice yes, but far from free.

Fair enough. In fact, I think the major point, and my original point, is that two people, in the same circumstances, can make the same decision for a myriad of different reasons. Out of free will or under duress. I mean, taking my example, there is even the idea that in doing so I could be granted Grace, and therefore have it be for a reason wholly unknown to me at the outset.
Maybe wearing a mask could actually save a life regardless of the fact that 100 years of actual studies prove otherwise. Just maybe its worth it.
I have never worn a mask. Until last week. Had a doctor's appointment and walked in without one. The receptionist handed me one. I said you know these don't do any good, don't you. She said until corporate won't fire me, you have to wear a mask. I said ok.

While I was in Florida on vacation, I read reviews on restaurants and other businesses I was about to patronize. The negative reviewers bitching about the lack of masking were obviously from out of state and completely unaware masking is purely optional there. Most choose not to because it's fucking stupid. I guess they didn't like having personal liberty and being responsible for their own well being while in Florida. Hopefully they never return. If they do return, I hope they decide to take a dip in a body of fresh water. Something is seriously wrong in the country when Florida Man and Florida Woman make more sense than the useless bureaucrats in DC.

This whole thing reminds me of the Twilight Zone episode in 1961 “the shelter” where the newborns tried to break into the other neighbors bunker only to find out the nuke alert was a bad call and all relations were shot to hell.
