Bullet diameters

So is .311 vs .308 a big deal when reloading for our 30 cal rifles? Or a none issue?
In something like an AK it may not be a big deal if you're expecting 3-5moa anyway. Or even soft cast lead bullets under 1200fps, there's quite a bit of leeway. For everything else, use the proper bullet size.

Haha. You must not be old enough to remember Firesign Theater and Nick Danger, Third Eye.

“ she opened the door and I was staring at twin 38’s……she also had a gun”.

Late 60’s/ early 70’s

Dude, that’s a little too early for my parents to remember.

The OPs question is more disturbing now that I know his screen name is a 50 year old TV reference. The guy asking is in his 60s or 70s?!?

Not TV, they made these very different talking comedy/story telling records (yes, they were LP records!) that were this stoney trippy kind of thing.

that’s not going to make his question any less scary, right

And who know how old he is….maybe he’s just into retro?

That was resolved…. I want to thx all those that showed theyre true spirit in helping with this old question and this new one. Adapt improvise overcome has been lost…

This isn't 'Nam, man. There is no reason to adapt nor improvise. Just do it right when there's 45-60ksi 6" from your face.

To answer the question, it depends how much clearance is in the neck, and what the throat geometry looks like. You can get away with it, but accuracy will probably suck, and it will be higher pressure than with the same bullet .003" smaller diameter. If the bullet + case wall thickness in the neck is a slip-fit in your chamber neck, you will blow primers. Do not recommend it. LEE sells bullet sizing dies.

The problem is you don’t know your freebore diameter and if I tell you how to overcome this problem you might just blow yourself up.

Thx for your thoughtful answer... this is what i was expecting from the crowd... i do find it somewhat funny about the comment of adapt overcome as I know folks that are reloading their old used primers

This is the article that prompted this thread. Check it out:

Older guns have different bore/groove diameters. Newer guns are pretty consistent. A .311” bullet won’t fit in the freebore of a newer 308 or 30-06 as most of the time it is .310” or less. A WW1 rifle could have a .310” groove diameter with a .312” freebore and a .311” bullet might be better actually.

....FWIW, I did a test a while back using HDY .310 AK VMax/SST bullets for my 300BLK as a possible contingency if supplies became really hard to get (which it did...again). I tested them "as is" and as suspected, they needed to be loaded shorter because the ogive contacted the throat earlier and velocities were a bit slower for the powder charges, but they were accurate. I also resized them using a Lee bullet sizing die (.308) and velocity increased and accuracy was good as well. I used my concocted alcohol/lanolin lube and they went through the Lee sizer like butter. After resizing I let them sit for a week or so to check for any spring-back or jacket delamination but they remained GTG. The barrels I tested it in is an early 16" Brownells (SATERN) 1-8 twist 5R and a 10.1" Ballistic Advantage "Hanson" 1-7 twist 416R SS. YMMV....
