OK
Guys,

Been on the forum for 15 years and I need some help to confirm something. Haven't looked much in the last 5 years though

Interviewed a guy for a job and he has 4 year Marine service on his resume. Asked him what he did and of course he was a Scout Sniper. Never got deployed did some kind of domestic security team terrorism activity.

I got a red flag when he told me when he was able to buy "his" sniper rifle from the military. I made sure he didn't build a clone or something he said his actual service weapon.

Is he full of shit? Or should I give him the benefit of doubt because there always seem to be some sort of loophole of dealing with the US GOV?

PM's are welcome on this as well

Thanks

My opinion is he's full of shit and if he's lying about that there's some other stuff he's fibbing on too. One. I've never heard of a soldier or Marine buying the weapons from their unit. There's so many controls on that stuff I just don't see it happening. Two, this fucker served 4 years in the Marines, went to the school house, but never deployed during GWOT? Get the fuck out.

We have a few SS guys who might be able to help you if you want more details on how to prove he is FOS.

But yeah, seems he is full of crap.

Unless you were interviewing him to buy a authentic scout sniper rifle…
Who cares?

I’d just hire based off ability and if I want them around the water cooler, don’t think he’d be good at one of the two, as it seems you don’t, just don’t hire the guy.

Legit this “stolen valor” crap is annoying, if your valor can be stolen so easily by some nut dressing up at the local surplus store, I don’t think you had that much to start with.

Just send his name to the USMC Scout Sniper Association (https://scoutsniper.org/) and ask if they can forward his name for a HOG check. It is a very small community and this is very common.

His DD-214 should show 8541 or 0317 in box 11 “primary specialty”. If it doesn’t, then he isn’t school trained and doesn’t hold the title….and should be placed into the wood chipper feet first. If you don’t have a wood chipper in your office, then buy one and write it off as a business expense. EDIT: I have no clue if there’s a new MOS for the Recon Sniper Course guys or not but the association should be able to help.

…if it is on the 214 and it still seems off, fakes are common, especially in this age of Adobe PDF editing features. Best to forward it along for verification.

Dealt with this shit before but the guy claimed BOTH Army Sniper and USMC Scout Sniper…and yet couldn’t pass a single weapons qual 😂 Both orgs verified he was full of shit.

Hopefully he isn’t and he’s just an embellisher. Best of luck. 🍻

I would ask for personal references.
If your business can benefit by hiring a veteran you NEED to verify his claims.
Hire him and others will question his claims UNLESS vetted.
Not good for business.
Unjustly reject him, after posting on this forum and you may see him again.
Since many think he is lying, you also OWE it to us to follow up.
I would like to know more about this bought/stolen rifle.

I know many folks in that community and the one trait they all have is that I don't think I have ever heard any of them proclaim their "Scout sniper" status to anyone. They just say they were in the Marines, and sometimes that is more info than they normally talk about.

Throw it right back at him,,,, tell him he's hired at 'such-and-such' a rate with "these" benefits.

When he sees his first check is for 1/4 the amount, with no attached bennies... just tell him "Those are special certifications that the office screwed up on, with your cheque stub".

Have fun with it.

Guys that was what I needed to hear. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't being to hard in him.

I can hear it now "it got lost", "the REMF's messed up and not all my schools and awards are on there", "All my stuff was classified so they couldn't put it on my dd-214"
It got lost… fine, get it replaced.
The classified stuff is on there, it's just listed as logistics, clerical… lol.

As for a copy of his DD-214, if it has less than four years on it then he was discharged early because he was a turd. There is a section for schools, look for the coveted "Scout Sniper" school. On the bottom is a section with his "re=enlistment code", you can look them up and find out if he is undesirable.

I too vote bullshit on the, " took my rifle home for three easy payments" lie. Was he stationed at Quantico? They have their gunsmiths on Quantico and they have been known to build you a rifle if you buy the parts or something of that nature. Generally not something they do for any random asshole or passers-by.

I was not a Marine, I spent a lot of time with Marines for a few years in the competitive shooting world. I did my 27 years doing other things for a different branch. This sounds like complete bullshit to me.

Hire a known liar.

Good business practice.

“Integrity has no need for a set of rules”
I was told by my unit’s new director that “Duty” is a more important value than “Integrity” 🧐 I obviously argued this….and was told that I was still wrong. At least he made it clear where he stands and what he values most.

The only issued weapons that I’m aware of that are eligible for individual purchase are the personalized side arms issued to General Officers. I remember doing the paperwork for my boss (I was his XO) when he was retiring…decent price; basically what the gov’t paid for the sidearm (Beretta M9, so yeah, a few years ago, LoL) and 3 magazines, and it came with a holster and pistol belt with his rank on the buckle.

Edit: Don’t remember the flag in the case, but a quick search found this; Army vs. AF, but same-same: https://www.army.mil/article/6938/general_officer_pistol_program_has_rich_history

Not all schools are listed on a DD-214. Mine does not have Ranger, sniper, infantry mortar platoon, instructor, jumpmaster or free fall jumpmaster, a few others. It does state badges and decorations (Distinguished Rifleman badge, President's Hundred tab, Pistol EIC, Ranger tab, Master Parachutist and Free Fall Parachutist badges) -- so depending on service, "Flair" doesn't always reflect all formal training and schools.

I would have said right afterward: "Wow that is cool! I know a couple of guys who had engaged the Taliban in AFG and were so good that the Corps allowed them to keep their service rifles as honorary gifts upon their discharge!", just to see what he would say to that... DD-214 will come after the friendly chat.

Two can play this game...

He is full of shit. Look at the guys here on the forums and how many of the actual "snipers" brag about it.

Personally when I was in and knew a few guys that were apart of the "special" groups in the military, these are the guys that don't go around and talk about being a sniper, ranger, blah blah blah.

If he was in the military he obviously has zero integrity, and no moral compass. Kick the bum to the curb and keep looking. If he is willing to lie about this, he will lie about everything

Not so fast.
The electronic format of the DD214 is available. Some POG downloaded it and distributed it.
We had a guy here, who, of course, was a scout sniper according to his dd214.
He got outed and fired.
What a piece of shit, wow.
That's going far out of the way to tell a sea story, glad they got him

LOL so you'd hire someone knowing they are a liar as long as they had the ability to do the job and they were fun to be around the cooler :ROFLMAO:... If someone can lie about one thing you don't think they could lie about the ability they have to do the job, lie about why they are always late, lie about why they can't meet deadlines, etc etc... I'm sure all of those fun cooler stories are going to be true too...

Fuck dude!

I clicked on this thread and bull shit started pouring out of the screen all over the floor of my house, Fuck me!

Unless that dude can produce a DD-214 and receipts from the armory (believe me he wont) than get him the fuck away from you.

He will be a cancer.

He will pull bullshit like this in every interaction and people will grow to hate him and it will infect your company team.

On MSG Duty we had a Marine come along and start telling us he served on a Top Secret Air Force Carrier and that explained a few of his ribbons we thought questionable.

He was actually trying to bullshit while on the inside.

I dont know how he made it through the MSG selection process so obviously a pathological liar.

Worst part was it was Moscow, just after Lonetree, and supposedly subject to an even stricter selection process.....well they do make mistakes I guess after all - I was there.

Well.
Makes sense why he is advancing to that level.
I have known many like that.
Ladder Climbers who couldnt even spell morals or integrity.
Fired later after they were found out.

Duty is important. Means nothing without integrity.
Otherwise we have “just following orders”.

There’s no limit to the fucking stupid shit vets will lie about. Blows my mind. Just be proud of what you VOLUNTEERED to do. 🤷🏻

Drinky Drank Story Time: 😂

I was on a plane back to the states from Kabul one trip (Dubai to Hotlanta leg). Dude next to me had an embassy shirt on…was going to ask if he was “labor or management” (he was clearly labor because he later offered me a cigarette 😂) but decided to not initiate contact. This was the kind of guy that starts conversations with people who have headphones on. I gave him a fake first name (#NotTodayState) and just said I was on vacation with friends in Dubai. I gave zero info or hints that I was former mil, let alone a contractor (but there was no hiding it as a non-obese American with a glorious beard, tan, whiskey odor, and blue jeans coming from that region) and he just rambled on for what seemed like forever about how he was in the army in Alaska and he used to “sign out the 50 cal sniper rifle” to go hunt moose while on leave. I found myself responding a lot with “huh. I didn’t know you could do that. Was that the big one that explodes?” in-between asking the flight attendant to give me a quadruple whiskey and nitequil.

The bullshit was so bad but it was like a train wreck that I got to control. I kept getting refills and scratching away to see how deep he would go with his bullshit.

The final story started with “do you know how they screened for delta force?” and then he went on to tell me how he was screened but wasn’t interesting enough to be selected. He says a delta team follows you without you knowing for a week to see if you live an interesting life. If you don’t, they don’t select you. He ended with “I guess I wasn’t that interesting.” 😂😂😂

Sometimes it’s fun to indulge the retardation and knock back a few drinks. But definitely not when it comes to the workplace. Fuckin scumbags.

Maybe the form ran out of room :ROFLMAO:

DD214 will list the type of discharge he received, honorable, other than honorable, dishonorable or uncharacterized.

Character of Service. The “Character of your service” determines your eligibility for VA Benefits. There are 6 types of “discharge of character” listed on military discharges: (1)”Honorable” or “Under honorable conditions”, (2) “General under Honorable Conditions”, (3) “Other than Honorable” (OTH), (4) “Bad Conduct” (BCD), (5) “Dishonorable” (DD), (6) “Entry Level (ELS) or Non-Characterized ” The DD 214 must have a Service Characterization of anything other than dishonorable to be considered a veteran.

1. All individuals who claim to have military service must document it with appropriate documentation (DD214)
2. My recommendation, quietly reject the application for employment If there appears to be the slightest amount of impropriety by the applicant. (Regardless of military service or not)
3. Confronting applicants who lack best of ability honesty is never a good plan. If they want to know why they were not hired, the answer, there were others who were more qualified. (Which is a true answer because an honest employee is always a better employee than one who is dishonest).
