Straight Razors

I just started using a straight razor recently. Bought a cheap one to try it out. What are some nice razors you would recommend? Is there much difference in them?

Actually love seeing people move to traditional shaving stuff.

Few years ago when Gillette said BBQing was toxic masculinity I bought an antique double edge razor and spent $11 on blades that have lasted me more than a year of shaves, shaving pretty much daily.

Fuck that $30 for 5 blades and being told I suck while doing it.

If you are going to be big on straights you will need to learn to sharpen.

Guessing unless you drop it on your granite counter top it's a light hone and strop to keep it in shape.

I have a old 53 I think Gillette clam shell safety razor and a 1941 3 piece, feather blades are the shit, but I haven’t shaved in several years, even then I only did my neck. Thought about a cut throat but never did it.

Most of them use replaceable blades anymore

That's my barbershop, before Covid hit and they started contact tracing so I haven't been back.

You either buy single edge blades or they have some sort of contraption that holds a double edge.

They would only do back of neck.

I haven’t tried the disposable blade straights. All of mine are true straights. I have some strops and diamond paste that I’ve used to touch them up over the years. But I think I need the edges touched up at this point. While I have no issues sharpening my knives and axes….I just don’t have the time / motivation to buy all wet stones to do these razors

There's only two types of people in the world. Those with beards and women
Mine was to the middle of my chest and the last haircut I got that bitch cut half of it off without me asking. It’s probably 8” now, I feel like a child. Lol

Hell my mustache went past my ears if I pulled it back .

A few years ago I caught mine on fire. It took two days to get the burnt hair smell out of my sinuses.

Now I keep it at about that 8 inch length.

Now, I myself haven't shaved in over a decade, and when I did that I hadn't shaved in over 2 decades. Went through a bit of a period where shaving was a necessity. At That Time, I used my grandfather's straight-razors. The one he carried through Europe in WWII, as well as the other one he purchased sometime in the 50's. I still have the stone, and the strop that he carried back then, too. Still incredibly sharp, and will last a lot of lifetimes when looked after.

I also have another grandfather's 'Safety Razor' which I believe is a Gillette but I'm not sure. For my own particular beard-shadow, I dull the 'Blue Blades' in less than a shave. Whereas with the Wilkinson Sword's, I can get 3-4 shaves before they get dull. I've had many others say the opposite, but YMMV.

Matter of fact, there was quite the thread here on the 'Hide, pre-Scout days. Lot of input from a lot of people. Most of which aren't here anymore.

And PMclaine, you'll have to come over here, so we can scan your face and that way you can sculpt whatever 'style' you want to look like in the computer, before we turn the laser on. Be sure to bring over a blank passport though, because the way this thing allegedly cuts stainless and whatnot.... "facial recognition" might be an issue. All we can do is try....

I lied mine was down to my nipple line pretty much. I'm still pissed at that lady months later lol

I have had multiple people stop me lately saying I have a nice beard, its weird. I guess it probably looks nicer though.

It was annoying pulling it out of my seatbelt, but I could cover my whole face when people whined about masks. Lol

Whipped Dog does a great job. I've dealt with Larry and he is a super nice fellow. Reasonable too. $22.00 for a hollow ground blade.

Who’s man enough to shave your balls with one? Safety razor is bad enough, them corners will get ya.

I don’t know how people use multiple blades, when I had to shave for work that shit tore my face up, single blade is the way to go.

Ya'll need to step up to something that will get really sharp. Obsidian is 500-1000 times sharper than surgical steel.

Obsidian-Arrowhead-1.jpg

Surprisingly, the edge of a piece of obsidian is superior to that of a surgeon’s steel scalpel. It is 3 times sharper than diamond and between 500-1000 times sharper than a razor or a surgeon’s steel blade resulting in easier incisions and fewer microscopic ragged tissue cuts.

I love my straight razor. Haven't had an electric razor in years. Nothing like a good shave from a piece of steel.

Already have my son practicing with a practice blade. Being only 9 he has some time before he needs a real blade

Durham Duplex. My father used one and his father used one. Badger-hair brushes and the shaving soap came in a wooden container with a wood lid. I used one from the early sixties until I went into the military in '67.

Any of you pussys shave with a straight razor? I have for years. I’m in need of having some blades honed but my guy is no longer doing it. Anybody know a place that will hone some razors for me?

Yep Everyday. Yes, I shave everyday and yes I use a straight everyday. Here are a few of mine:

Here's one I had custom made by a dude in the UK:

As to honing: I hone my own. If you want to send it to me, I can hone it for you. Or there is a guy Glen (can't remember his last name off the top of my head) in Id who restores and hones SR's. I can get his contact info for you when I get home tonight.

In all seriousness, buy a nice double sides wet stone made just for that and do it yourself. Plenty of places online to get tips. It's not like sharpening a knife, it's more delicate work and almost kind of relaxing.

I have an Escher stone that I prefer to not use but I have a number of Belgian Coticules and some other honing stones that I do use for my Solingen's, I believe I have a couple of Sheffield's and some feathers (I don't care for feathers, too light imo)among a few . I also have two strops and some hone paste material for those.

There are a few techniques to honing. Some people use electrical tape on the spine, I don't. I brought my travel Solingen, coticule and strop with me to Afghanistan and Iraq. A little practice and you get fairly quick at shaving with them.

I picked up a 5000/8000 whetstone and a 12,000 grit Naniwa finishing stone. I’ll give it a crack. Diamond paste on my felt strop improved the edge but it’s still pulling.
Go light on the stones. Too much and you get what they call "silver wire". Strop technique is another acquired skill. I have more than a few nicks on one of my strops from not paying attention and going to fast:mad:.

That is a cool blade!!

I acquired a straight from one of the many actors that played the Lone Ranger among a lot of other movies and shows. That straight stays put away with the documentation of its origin and the list of shows he played on.

I ran one for a bit, bought about $800 in stones, then flattening stones, which you have to use on your new honing stones and then every time you use them.

It's like making your own gas, got old so quick that I just threw everything away. Strop strop strop, not getting the "I never had hair" type of result, so now you hone. ten hours of scraping your stones on the flattening stone, then run the razor up and down the 4000, 8000, 15000, strop with diamond paste, english bridle side, done.

Got old, I even went to storing the stones vertically to try and keep them flat so I wouldn't have to use the damn flattening stone so much, didn't work.

Then, you also have to watch your flattening stone, if it is out of whack it's recommended you buy a large chunk of granite, put sandpaper down, run the flattening stone on it to flatten the flattening stone...

All that fuckery or you were essentially imaginary shaving, you should be able to shave against the grain and it should feel like you never had hair.

Safety razor, dirt cheap, still one blade, still have cool designs, are ancient, easy and they will get you that "never had hair" shave. You could do the disposable straight razor types too if you need to feel cool.

I use disposables on my nuts, never found the others to be worthwhile in that region.

I have had some portion of facial hair for almost 60% of my life, and do not ever plan to shave my full beard again. I trim regularly to a #4 guard on my Wahl trimmer.

One of the young men I work with finds it humorous that my mustache is older than he is.

I never found the need to put that much time into a blade. Regular stropping and occasional stoning (usually just my Belgian coticules) is what I have gotten away with.

Yikes... I have about $50 in a double sides stone. I have a pair of $200-ish razors and a few that belonged to my great grandfather, who learned his trade as a barber giving hair cuts outside the gate of an Army base during WW1. So they're not exactly new.

I shaved with a straight razor for several years, only stopping when life changes made it impractical. (started shaving infrequently, and then when I did it was in a hurry and half a sleep.) I view it as keeping alive a lost art.

THIS, is what my grandfather taught me, with his stuff that he'd had since he carried it in the early 40's in Holland during the war. And he used it as such, though to about '94 when he gave it to me.

I've been using the same stuff since, in the same manner. Now I admit that it's been a while because of the beard I have, but I'm not in the business of shaving. I'm probably missing something, but all that other stuff spoken of seems just a touch 'excessive'.

To each their own. Could also be that 'my level of good' ain't good enough. Maybe it takes 'razor sharp' to a whole new level, and is now 'razor sharper'.

Merry Christmas
