Measuring throat issue

A friend of mine has been trying get me to measure the throat depth of my rifles for a more precise reloading measurement. I originally did not use this method due to lack of confidence in the measuring technique used. For example. With the Hornady tool, my .308 Winchester and and AMAX bullet the OAL come out to 2.9555. The reloading books have that round at a max C.O.L. of 2.800. A similar scenario occurred with my 77grn SMK for my AR so I stopped and packed up the tool. Is this normal to have larger throat measurements? Lastly, is it safe to reload and fire those rounds?
Thanks!

You measured your chamber, who cares what some book that has to say.

Load to what your rifle is, not what some book that has to cater to every shit chamber and mag on earth.

Also, quit measuring oal aside from fitting in your mag, get a bullet comparator and measure where the bullet touches the barrel instead of where it arbitrarily floats freely in empty space.

Thanks for the reply. I do have that tool. That is what gave me my measurement of 2.955. Basically, since this is the true measurement of my chamber, I just need to ensure this fits my mag and I am good to go?

You don’t have that tool if you got a measurement of 2.955 and are measuring the top of the bullet. I’m not talking about the pusher. I’m talking about the comparator bushing.

You know your max that the chamber allows. Now you test and see where it shoots best backing up from that number. I would start .020 off (or max mag length) and do powder and once you find the powder charge do a seating depth test.
