Hunting & Fishing Let’s start a coyote thread.

30 yards quartering away.

For any of you guys that hunt deer, do you use your gut pile as coyote bate? How long does it take for them to find it? about 48 hours? I'm thinking about going hunting tonight from the deer I shot yesterday.

There really isn't a timeframe. I've seen them on it the night it was killed, and sometimes it never gets touched.

We set a camera on a gut pile last year.
Birds came within 12 hrs. Then a coyote found it around the 24 hr mark. A bear found it around 36 hrs. It was all gone; hide, guts and legs within 48 hrs.

Wish the coyotes in my area were colored like that!

My farmer friend, sadly, has lost 5 cows recently... a small cattle operation. Likely due to bad hay.

This has, however, been a bonus for my coyote hunting. Shots have ranged from 350/400 to wayyy the heck out there. Recent snows have helped with spotting. I spend a lot of time glassing, and the dead cows have caused the coyotes to concentrate in a fairly small area. This one was in the 4-450 yard range, 223 Ackley Improved 75 grain Amax H4895. Combo is working good.

I havent connected past 750 yards, but still have a lot of winter left, hopefully I will get something in the 4 figure range.

Great thread and some good kills. We hate coyotes with a passion where I am. We have the coywolves and they are so damn big it's almost not a challenge to shoot at them standing still. Pretty tough, too. I was squirrel hunting with my grandson, and one trotted up on us while we were sitting at the base of an acorn tree. All I had was my over-under 12ga, and I gave him two barrels of high-brass #4's and he still jumped up and ran off before I could reload.

What a Birthday Present for me today.

I had misses at 1045 and 1100 yards a couple days ago. This morning I joined the 1000 yard confirmed kill club, ranged the coyote at 1005 yards, held windage, and sent it. I couldn't believe it when it just tipped over, and it slid down the hill.

As it turns out, a head shot. <I'd rather be lucky than good.> well actually being both would be ok but I have work to do.

The coyote gods were looking down favorably on me, as my wind hold was .1 mil today, not the .7-1 mil plus from a couple days ago. I do need to spend more time shooting in the mountains to get my wind calls dialed in better.

Rbros 6x47 Lapua, one of those old 105 melting tip Amaxes, H4350, 3160fps cci 450.

Saw a total of 5 today but only got 1 shot, as a friend and I have already killed most of the dumb ones.

Life is good, best wishes to ALL of you in 2022. I'll add a few photos from my cell phone in a bit.

Whats the going rate for coyotes?
I see snow and ice in the truck so I'm guessing whatever it is it doesnt apply in south Texas.

The last carcass I sold I got 20 bucks, I had 3 total this time but only got $45. I was hoping for 60, but the buyer probably burnt 15 bucks worth of gas for the trip so I was okay with the amount. I don't have the inclination to skin/flesh/clean and stretch myself- if I happen to hit a bone and blow a big hole , if its mangy, or if it's steep ground to get to them, I'll leave em for the magpies/eagles/crows . I AM enjoying the fresh air and retirement!

I'm in WA, too. Who are you selling them to? I think there's a guy around Benton city that will buy them whole.

@Ranchhand what's the details on the rifle. Nice looking dogs... dead cows are certainly a magnet right now.

I saw one this am... but ranged it at 1450 going away over the ridge. Also saw one yesterday on the run starting at 450 and disappeared at about

1200. Probably ones we have *cough* educated in the last few weeks. All good ! I am getting some longer shots in... my wind calls still suck most of the time.

Remington m700 5r tactical in 6.5 creedmoor.
The stock is a gunville m40 that I spent many hours finishing. (Last winters project).
The scope is a vortex 3x15 something or other.
I may or may not have some educated coyotes on the ranch here....

I didn't bring enough gun this am. I spotted one at 2k struggling to get through the powder snow. I watched it move 1/4 to 1/2 mile and bed in the snow.

I went back out this afternoon and saw some interesting looking tracks in the snow. Got out the spotter... hmmm that looks like the top of a coyotes head/ears in the brush near the base of the rock bluff. It was.

I missed a head shot at 804. Shot over its back at 770, & adjusted my elevation and tipped it over at 740. I love hunting suppressed!
I did not attempt to retrieve the carcass. Maybe I don't need a 22 Creedmoor, and the 6x47 Lapua IS the ideal coyote cartridge, for this terrain anyways...

Awesome opportunity it sounds like. I just got my suppressor on my 6.5 cm and have yet to take it on a coyote hunt. I’m excited to try. I don’t have doe out to the races you’re killing at but am excited to go nonetheless.

Went out this am at daylight and my AO had fog and poor visibility. Saw a whitetail fawn in same spot as a couple days ago... not sure what the issue is but it is not travelling with a small group which is normal for the area. and not terribly spooky... so I'm thinking sick.

I fiddled around with a hand call howler. I dunno what the hell I'm doing, sometimes I get coyotes to talk to me, sometimes not. No vocal responses, but I did have one come in. First spotted it at 6-700, lost it in the heavier grass, and then spotted it again at about 400. It was moving towards me slowly at 350 when I tipped it over. It's butt fur is rubbed off pretty good, and it looks like there may be an old wound on its leg.
Pelt isn't going to be worth any $

The rancher put an old horse down a couple days ago, and while its not in an ideal place, that will likely provide me entertainment through calving season. Magpies on it today... hopefully a coyote or three soon and perhaps a wayward kitty cat too.

I had the same results with a turkey gobbler call. I would hear activity over on some other ridge lots of times. Then I realized it was probably another turkey hunter doing the same thing that I was doing.
