    308 & 3006

Two of my wife's uncles were in Korea. One night, after church on a rainy cold winter evening one of them looked at me and asked, "Was the M1 a 30.06?" I replied, "Yes". He nodded and said, "I thought it was but it's been so long. I only remember two things about the M1. It was heavy and it...

What's your favorite WW2 and older bolt rifle and why?

How long are your arms? I'm 6'3" tall with long arms. My 03 Mk1 with the standard stock just beats the crap out of me. About 5 to 10 rounds and my cheek is pretty beat up. The stock is so short my nose is almost on the cocking knob and I can't get a thumb over the wrist of the stock and...

what do you use to kill tree rats

I used to squirrel hunt with my Ruger Mk1 5.5" bull barrel and Remington Thunderbolts (30 years ago, Thunderbolts were cheap and accurate-in my guns). Head shots always worked. My dad, and his dad, preferred .22 shorts in their squirrel rifles. Grandpa used a little Western Field single shot...

    Cheap varmint loads for 30-06

I know you said you wanted a bullet with a cannelure, are you crimping rounds in a bolt action rifle? My brother used those 100 grain short jackets (I thought they were Hornady bullets, but I could be wrong) in his M1917 and he used Unique powder, but I have no idea how much powder or what...

Has anyone used H4350 in M1903 loads?

Many years ago, the best load in my 03A4 was a compressed load of IMR4350, Federal BR primers and Sierra 180 grain match bullets. I could routinely bust 3 out of 5 one gallon milk jugs at 600 yds. (have to fill them with water to see them move/bust/pop). It saw/is a sweet shooting rifle with...

    Parallax and cheek weld

Parallax adjustable scope or not, cheek weld makes a difference. I'll never forget my first Appleseed. I had my M1A with an old Bushnell 4X12 scope with the ring set to 25 yds. I remember that instructor saying, "Hey, nice groups. Any idea why they aren't where you want them to be?" And no...

How long will reloads last in storage?

A couple of years ago, maybe three, I ran across a 20 round box of .223 ammo I'd loaded up to try in my M700 varmint special back in 1983 or 84. 45 grain spritzers with H335 powder. I took them to the range to shoot up in my vARmint rifle (AR15 with a 24" stainless steel bull barrel) and those...

How long is powder good for?

When I moved to the Richmond, VA area in 1985 I put my powder up in the attic (primers, too). About 4 years ago I got the primers and powder down and start using them. No issues. It gets pretty hot in my attic in the summer and pretty cold in the winter.

Why not 4350 for the .308?

The most accurate loads I've ever fired in my .308 were with IMR4350 powder and Sierra 180 grain match bullets. It was a compressed charge and I don't remember the amount. Federal bench rest primers. Never any sign of pressure at the case. It just broke my M1A operating rod, twice, before I...

    Early Winchester 52 at 100yds

I've got a 52B. No doubt the most accurate .22 rifle I've ever fired. Seems like I read somewhere (for the 52B's anyway) that the year of manufacture was stamped on the bottom of the barrel near the receiver. Mine is stamped either 35 or 1935 (if I remember correctly). I ran an oily patch...

Sidearms & Scatterguns Why you DON'T like Glock.

I only bought one. A M31. It does go bang when you pull the trigger. It did not meet my accuracy expectations, compared to my old 1911's. It doesn't fit my hand. Finger grooves, off, back of the slide too high, just feels awkward in my hand. The trigger actually isn't too bad, sights are...

    Moving away from hand primers

I finally wore out my almost 30 year old Lee hand priming tool a couple years back. It just broke at the hinge pin/hook on the handle. I had picked up a spare a couple of years ago and had set them up so I had the small primer tray in one and the large primer tray in the other so I only had to...

    Another 30-06 load question

I've not had an issue with slow burning powders in my .308 or 30.06's with compressed powder loads. What I have seen, just 3 or 4 times, is the bullet rising back up out of the case neck. Every now and then, you have a case with a thinner neck (or something) that results in less the needed...

    30-06 reloading

My father-in-law preferred 180 grain bullets but would use 220's. Factory Remington corlokt bullets, the round nose style. They shot very well in his Remington and Browning auto loaders. The best accuracy I've ever had from my 03A4 was with Sierra 180 grain bullets. I could bust 3 out of 5 1...

    Alternative Vietnam Sniper rifles

I have a friend, recently retired from work, who spent some time in VN in 70 or 71. Small teams, inserted by helicopter, job was to find the enemy and pull back while calling for air strikes or larger unit backup. He told me he went through several weapons before settling on the Grease Gun...
