Open top vs closed top action - how much difference?

I've been pondering this recently and can't find much discussion on it. A closed top action should obviously be stiffer, all else being equal, and it seems that this should benefit accuracy, but how much is this worth? I notice many, but not all custom actions are closed top, but is that...

Come and check us out at the Michigan Precision Rifle Steel Challenge page.

Hmmmm, looks like they have changed those. I had a copy of the calendar that I downloaded about a month ago showing it the following weekend. Guess I'll have to rearrange those weekends.

Come and check us out at the Michigan Precision Rifle Steel Challenge page.

I thought this was the BWSA match? I was seeing Sep 26-28 on the BWSA page. Or is this another location?

Rifle Scopes Dumb question - Do scopes come with the turrets centered?

Find the clicks per revolution then count revolutions from stop to stop. Much easier.

Rifle Scopes Lowest rings for 3-12x44 on an AR?

Measure the outside diameter of the objecive, divide by two then add 0.125". That's about as low as you can get. If you are running standard style rings many of those are sold measuring from the base to the bottom of the scope, so subtract 15mm (0.591") Personally, I find 1.25" rail-center of...

    Holy smokes, DPMS G2 rifles

Mine does the same. Haven't put any handloads through it either: factory CBC, Aguilla and "Colt" (reboxed Barnaul, didn't realize that when I bought it). All shoot great, just don't like the looks of the primer. I'll try and get some pics up. Waiting on LRRPF52's secret fix for the primers...

Can a 308 rifle shoot any grain bullet without damaging to the barrel or gun?

For what you're doing, 145 grain is perfect. Sounds like you're new to rifles. Find a Project Appleseed shoot in your area. It's a great weekend course that will square you away with the fundamentals of solid marksmanship. I'm an instructor up in Mi and can tell you that even guys who have...

Can a 308 rifle shoot any grain bullet without damaging to the barrel or gun?

Any 308 diameter bullet, yes, with the right powder load. Will the results be optimal? Not nesaccarily. The twist rate tells you how heavy a bullet you can stabilize. Too heavy a bullet for the spin and it won't fly true but won't hurt the barrel. Too light a bullet in a fast twist barrel...

Help!!! Savage model 111 budget build

If you're really on a budget, swap the 338 barrel and bolt head for a 308 or one of the 6.5mm cartridges (actually pretty easy to do with a Savage). Everything for 338 is going to cost more. More powder, bigger bullets, etc. Since you're just getting into things you'll want to learn with...

    Rifle Scopes cantilever mount questions??

Was it just the act of holding your head up that was awkward (ie: using muscle and needing a lower scope height) or the angle your head/neck was at? In a very low position, you either end up tilting your head up/back a lot or looking out of the top of your eyes field of view (or both). You may...

Took an AR15 out today and shot it without optics , just iron sights

Sterling is right on about irons, they require the right technique and, yes, the right target. Shooting a larger target (say 4+ moa) instead of the little stick on ones will let you see the target to pick it out. Personally, I find that a GI size front sight post is easier to shoot than the...

    Holy smokes, DPMS G2 rifles

Looking forward to this. I'm seeing noticeable cratering on the primers in my G2 shooting factory CBC M80 ammo. I'd say the firing pin indent is almost pushed out to level with the rest of the primer.

RRA LAR-8 X-1, anyone got one?

Hope you've got better luck than I. I waited 15 months for a LAR8 before dropping the order. Ok, I ordered Dec 2012, so I expected some wait, but... Gave up last month and switched for a different 308 AR which I had in less than 2 weeks. I really do like the bolt catch on the RRA though.

    Help with AR scope mount

Well, the WOA rail arrived. Looks great, nicely machined with a good finish and fits tight on the rifle. The rail adds about 0.5" to the sight height at the rear of the rail. I say at the rear because I got the 20MOA version, but the rear of the rail is where it matters for getting the right...

Rifle Scopes Reticle suggestion for newb...MIL/MIL or MOA/MOA??

I thought benchresters just used a duplex or dot reticle. Benchrest is shot on a square range at known distances and with targets of a known size. What is there to range? For a ranging reticle, get what you like. As long as the turrets match the reticle, you'll be fine. Personally, being...
