Thanks everyone for the help. Submerged barrel tip in boiling water. I then used vice grips to squeeze the shims (extremely carefully). The shims were crushed and popped off! I actually had 3 shims on there (I was super anal about indexing correctly and guess I needed 3 to get that last degree).

Shims look like stainless steel to me. I'll see if I can use a thread protector to make sure things are safe before I do anything with tools and the shims. Boiling water first though. Will update my progress friday or saturday.

Ah I didn't use hot water, I'll give that a go. Tried to pry them with a small knife but couldn't get even the thinest part of the blade under them.

Re: Who likes revolvers? I love shooting .38 wadcutters out of my old model 66. I think it's the simplicity of the recoil that makes me enjoy it so much. I'm not really into them for 'practical' purposes though.

I wanted to get a few different data-points on how many rounds people send through their rifles without cleaning before they find accuracy begins to fall-off. I'm particularly interested in .308, but would love to hear about other calibers as well.

Re: Subsonic .22 Ammo CCI standard seems to excel in just about everything (and it's a sub-sonic). Really not much more expensive than bulk stuff (if you buy it in bulk).
