Best caliber / cartridge for 1,000 to 1,500 yards

No argument there. Any time I loaded for 600 yds. or beyond (out to 1,000 yards) charges are weighed. Sure you can throw a charge light but then bring it up to the target weight on a scale. I say 'out to 1,000 yards' as that is the limit of ranges in my geographical area. Also it is the limit of...

Best caliber / cartridge for 1,000 to 1,500 yards

I actually liked 4064 as it had good load density in .308 and .30-06 but sometimes it was not easy to get ahold of so would go with whatever was on hand. Also I found that 4064 was best measured as opposed to 'thrown' due to it being kind of a longer stick powder.

Best caliber / cartridge for 1,000 to 1,500 yards

LOL... that was pretty much the go to powder several decades ago for the larger capacity cases and/or heavier bullets. It was not unusual to buy a 20 pound keg of IMR 4895 for .308 or .30-06 for everything out to 600 yards and then have a keg of IMR 4350 for 600 yards and beyond. Of course the...

Best caliber / cartridge for 1,000 to 1,500 yards

I almost shudder to think of how antiquated and old school my stuff is as well as the knowledge I bring to the table. Guess I'll have to sit at the kiddie table at Thanksgiving from now on. If only Mr. Peabody could fire up the 'Way Back Machine' I would have a ball at Camp Perry with what I...

Best caliber / cartridge for 1,000 to 1,500 yards

Exactly. I haven't shot the Wimbledon Cup Match, or for that matter the Leech Cup Match in a long time so the only notes I have are from the "past' as you have so rightly noted.

Best caliber / cartridge for 1,000 to 1,500 yards

Ok Ok, I will chime in again. 7mm Mag. with a 26" barrel twist in 10, 168gr Sierra HPBT Match King pushed by 66.5 grains of IMR4350. .300 H&H Mag. with a 26" barrel twist in 10, 200gr Sierra HPBT Match King pushed by 70 grains of H4831. .30-338 with a 28" barrel twist in 12, 190 gr Sierra...

Best caliber / cartridge for 1,000 to 1,500 yards

Couldn't leave well enough alone now could you? Just had to up and poke the bear.

    Recoil comparison

Now if you Really want to go down the rabbit hole, and who doesn't, go with a slower burning powder as opposed to a faster one. There was once a line of thinking that a faster burning powder would spike/kick quicker and hence 'harder' because it consumed itself 'faster' where as the slower...

    Recoil comparison

You might want to try holding the butt of the rifle a little closer to the left or on the fat/muscle pad a bit off center from the nook/cranny that most people put the rifle butt into. Maybe a change in position on your shoulder might be more comfortable. Also at the 200 yard stage of a match...

    Recoil comparison

Ever think about a .243 if recoil is of a concern? It should be able to take down hogs. Also there is a difference 'felt' in 'free recoil' force between a light rifle and a heavy rifle. Case in point, way back when, there was a fellow shooter that came to a couple matches with a 300 meter...

    Rifle Cleaning

After every match (or about 100 rounds in a .308 or .30-06) while using a bore guide, wet patch chamber to muzzle then remove patch. Pull bare rod through barrel then bronze brush chamber to muzzle and after it clears muzzle pull back to chamber. Do that x 5 then clean patch x 2 and leave dry...

300 Win Mag - Hornady 190 Gr CX Bullet

Can't help you with RL22 but if memory serves me correctly the Wimbledon Cup Match had a fair amount of winners using IMR4350 and in particular about 66 grains behind a 190 Sierra HPBT MK. Interestingly that load was used in .30-.338, and .308 Norma Mag. so probably could be used to bring about...

    Barrel contours

Considering the amount of powder the 300 Win Mag can swallow up and that powder usually being slow or slower burning, a barrel in the 26"+ or more range might be a good idea. Seriously doubt you are going to shoot a 'Rattle Battle' string with a 300 Win Mag, or for that matter a 200 yd. or 300...

30-06…. Anyone use this anymore ?

It was past dusk yesterday when I read your post so took some photos earlier today when the light was better. First photo is the 06 in the case and second photo is all the accoutrements moved out of the way. The third photo is the 06 to the far right. The fourth and fifth photos are the two...

30-06…. Anyone use this anymore ?

With a lot of attention being directed toward the 6.5 mm caliber in recent years and human nature being what it is, shooters seem to be gravitating toward the 'New Show Room Model'. Kind of like going to buy a new car and thinking 'well it is bright and shiny plus it smells nice' (as well as the...
