Record sniper kill. 50cal 2800+ meters

Well Walt you are about to tap into one of my main passion of my professional life. There is a whole lot to look at when considering the probability of this shot as you might have already guessed, must of the folks in the ELR forum have played the game long enough to know how difficult this shot...

Record sniper kill. 50cal 2800+ meters

No offense but you're mentality in the stereotypical one of people who don't really understand the Barrett and what it is capable of. I don't really hold it against you because I was once a member of that group and the vast majority go my peers are also still in that group. While you are...

Record sniper kill. 50cal 2800+ meters

I was in was in Uruzgan during most of 2012 and worked a bit with the snipers from 2nd Commando. I've in fact worked with the two dudes to which this acticle pertains. While I wasn't there for that particular shot I have witnessed them in action and I have no doubt about the events as I have...

Night Vision PVS-27/26 Max magnification experience?

I've been using the PVS 26/30 and the 27 for the last few years (as a sniper). I actual did quite a bit of Fox hunting in Afghanistan during my down time and I found that depending on lighting conditions you can get PID on a Fox or a dog (not that anyone cared) at 400-600 with the 26/30 and...

    Range Report 308 Win, 208 AMax, RL17

Ok so I've finally jumped on this 208 band wagon with my 20" Surgeon (1/11.25). I figured this would make awesome round for Mules this fall. So far I've only developed load data with varget as RL17 seems to be a little tricky to find (ironic i know). Using once fired LC LR brass primed...

Forgive me in advance for being potentially offensive in my ignorance...

Not to get to off topic but your idea about the 77 smks is interesting, I've heard of the wwI improvisation using backwards ball but I've never tested it...yet. That said I've seem quite a bit of mk262 shot at AR500 but I've never seen it do what you're describing. Is it possible your AR500...

I've dreamed of this rifle a hundred times, someday I'm going to get off my ass and build one myself...someday.

To address your question: yes a modern sniper (on average) would still probably out class a sniper from the days of old even with out a laser range finder, NODs and ballistic computer. Simply put our training and knowledge has come a long way. Technology certain would give us a Hugh edge but it...

    M193 & M80 Accuracy ???

A lot of it may depend on the lot and if you're gun cares for. I'd say worst case 3-4 MOA but 1.5-2 MOA happens from time to time. I have seen one lot of M80 go 1 MOA out of SCAR H but I'd say that's on the rare side of expectations.

    14.5" 308 ar

I'm kind of in the same boat as you. I currently run a 16" but it's a 1-12ish twist and doesn't care for the heavies so I'm hunt for a 1-10 and I'm considering a 14.5". When I crunched the numbers I kind came to the same conclusion, I'm only looking to go 6-800m max. I've only seen carbine...

Ok yeah I see now that perhaps I've aggressively dived of the deep end in regards to the whole idea of "have we really come far?" as original posted. If the matter at hand is simply a question of the rifle and scope instead of the full spectrum of sniping then I would still say yes but not...

The Aussie team did ok, can't recall their placement, good bunch of dudes thought. Chatted with one of them a bit and found out I had worked with some of his mates from 2nd commando last trip. I agree with you that we are probably on the same page but just look at it from different...

I will have to respectfully disagree with you on several points, I'm glad you brought up the USASOC comp as I was also in attendance as a competitor I believe it illustrates the advancement of modern sniping both in tech and knowledge. 1. Regarding low power scopes (2.5x to say 4x): the vast...

Forgive me in advance for being potentially offensive in my ignorance...

Tx_Flyboy brings up some valid points. Particularly regarding how so squeeze the most performance out of this old war horses. More offend than not there are tricks of the trade (beyond just the application of the fundamentals) that have been long lost to time for most of us, even sniper...

To address the original question, yes we have come a long ways. Every second gained in target identification/acquisition, every meter gained in range, every MOA gained in accuracy is lives saved somewhere. The gains may seem small but the results produced are not. How 1000+ meter shots do you...
