Mine is set up pretty niche for hunting, primarily pigs at night. No longer going overseas and doing cool guy shit, ran plenty of different setups in my glory days. For ME and MY mission, have been extremely happy with a Crye JPC 1.0 for probably six or more years now. No plates in my hunting...
Only fantastic service so far on about six transactions with them. My two hunting buddies purchased DTNVGs from them as well with excellent service. Highly recommend.
Another good weekend with some heavy hitters using GOV toys. Put five rounds in a 500lb+ boar but never recovered him. Kept thinking he was a cow instead of a pig so threw off our game.
Also did the Faxon 16” originally for weight savings. Mine actually shot pretty well, buddy who did similar build did not shoot as well. Very handy setup, especially running suppressed. Eventually switched to 20” Proof with +2 gas. Much better setup. Appreciate the velocity increase and very...
I’ve got the UNV 850 cubes on my brush guard. Really only use when going through gates on really dark nights. Otherwise you lose too much depth of field when driving and scanning. One is flood and one is spot. I’m hunting mostly wide open spaces, though.
Kill between 60-80 pigs a year for the last 20+ years. Have seen perfect shot 308 and 300 win mag to boiler room run 800+m out of a field. Neck shots if want them to drop. Everything else on running pigs comes down to money for me. 5.56 is a heck of a lot cheaper to miss with (and you will), and...
I would absolutely use it as a pig round. Small sample size of two last weekend and out of a 6.5 Creedmoor, but very impressed with the bullet performance. About a 3in exit wound at 200m. Way more energy out of the 6.5G than the 77gr mk262 we typically use for pigs.
Finally got the youngest son a pig at night. Actually had a big sounder come out during daylight the next day and killed a few more. Trying out the new Hornady 100gr ELD VT in 6.5 Creedmoor and some impressive performance so far.
Quick follow up. The Steiner filter from B&H photo worked perfectly. Minimal bloom on the only pig encountered that night allowing for a much more precise aiming point. Best $10 I’ve spent in a long while. Wish I’d figured this out a decade ago!
Have you tried heavier bullets? Barnes 70gr 5.56 has probably worked best for me over the years. Now running military mk262 but don’t think it’s done better than the Barnes. Love shooting bolt guns but way more effective using an AR for quick follow up shots.
I’ve run a crye jpc for many years now and couldn’t be happier. Like how it distributes the weight better than typical chest rigs. Also very low profile.
Have the vortex 3x and 6x. Both work well. 6x is pretty long and takes up quite a bit of real estate. Nice for getting a better image for zeroing, but otherwise 3x stays on the rifle.
Nothing better than exposing a young kid to hunting for the first time. Took my buddy’s 10 year old out this past weekend. We spent the morning starting of with weapons safety and shooting 22s. Progressed to ARs off a tripod, and finished 6.5 ringing steel out to 400m. Culminated with him...
