I’ve got a Vudoo with a Kahles on it and would be hard pressed to shoot great groups with any of that ammo. Try SK Standard Plus - it’s the cheapest of the “good” ammo and what I plink with.
They teach a police SWAT sniper course at a range by me… first thing they do on day 1 is take away everyone’s Kestrels and rangefinders. By day 4, most of the students are making good hits at unknown distances using reticles for ranging and basic tree / bush / grass observation for wind.
I mean guys still shoot with dope cards calling wind by hand, the Kestrel is a bit of a luxury item. However - I run the 5700 Elite with Sig binoculars - the ability to laser a target and have it show corrections in the HUD for the spotter is worth every penny to me. We do a lot of reduced...
@USMCSGT0331 do you know the spec on the bolt knob? I got a badger mini for my (admittedly) not a clone build, but the ones on the real XM3s look so much better.
Also N570 is probably the biggest powder kernel I’ve ever seen. Runs really well with an autotrickler. Will not throw accurately under any circumstances.
RL26 is a speed freak right up until 230 grain projectiles or so. N570 will get you more out of the PRC and RUM but it’s probably too slow for the WSM.
I like white paper with red aiming points. You can see hits at 100 all day, even with crappy optics in bad conditions. When it comes to going out past 500 - IMHO you either need pits and plastic sighters (like military ranges), steel or my personal favorite, shotmarker. Even with great...
For most folks, it’s about the joy of shooting. 99.9% of us here will never use a firearm in a defensive fashion. I wouldn’t overthink it - basic safety, then plinking at some reactive targets (clays, soda cans steel). If they enjoy that, print off some AQTs. Great practice for positional...
I find that I’ve got plenty of brightness during the day (more than I need for good observation) and typically shoot with Oakley flak jackets. It’s those early morning / right before sunset hunting shots where you need all the light gathering, and I shoot without eye pro there.
I just went through this with a new 6.5. Mine didn’t care for Hornady but it shot Federal Gold Medal 130 Bergers into tight groups. Also you can get the FGMM pretty cheaply off ammoseek. Not a hunting bullet per se - but plenty of horsepower to humanely put down a coyote out to 600. Out of an...
I had all of my SBRs engraved at a local trophy store. Very professional machine engraving and he had the right stuff to blacken the exposed aluminum to match the rest of the receiver.
Ordered Jul 31 23, shipped Dec 26 (Santa’s elves were on it this year). It all worked out - the lead times were similar for the barrel and stock so it all kind of arrived at once after 5 months of waiting. The delayed gratification makes it sweeter, I swear.
