A contrary take from someone who's been "telecommuting" since way before it was common: there is very little benefit to going into a physical office. "Managers" don't have any management competency; they're just babysitters who dole out threats and dangle the occasional carrot.
    Depends on the occupation.
I get more productivity from those working from home, than those that work in the office... in some of the professions.

So .3% (0.003) of Virginia 95,000 full time workforce resigns because their management wants them to return to the office, while at the same time both companies and goverments across the country are struggling to retain employees, and that is supposed to be a big deal? Sounds like normal turnover to me, and pretty lightweight at that.

And the media continues to claim to not be agenda driven. Pack of fucking liars.

Bloated state government loses a few hundred worthless and lazy employees who think they are more special than everyone else.

Looks like a win to me. I'll bet 90+% are from a couple N Virginia counties and the capitol.
You got it. Fuckem. just dead weight.

It really depends on the kind of person you are and what kind of job you do. I work from home a lot, probably 50% of the time but I'm a salesman with a territory so I am pretty driven.

80% of my income is commission based so there is an incentive for me to put in extra effort. The majority of government workers that I have dealt with are not the self-driven type.

Sorry...back in 2020 when I was still working and the Covid thing hit and everyone who could was working at home management was terrified nothing would get done and it'd be all fucked up. The reality was that people who can work from home and do their jobs without interference actually pushed the company to record profits.

My Wife was pushed to work from home and when asked to return to office she did - they sent her back home to work because she gets shit loads more done from home without the commute and without stupid meetings and distractions. It's not going back to the Office and if companies won't/can't adapt they'll loose their employees to companies that can/will adapt - the days of driving to the office to be micromanaged are over. And the companies who won't convert are fucked because there is a deficit of competent employees. people who can work unsupervised and get it dun can go anywhere they like now.

It changed. It won't go back.

I was not happy about the work from home solution in March 2020. I got used to it pretty quick, and loved it by the time we had been doing it for 3-4 months.

If my company told me I had to go back to the office 5 days a week, I would be looking for other employment. Luckily, they implemented a "hybrid" plan where we still work at home the majority of the time (3 remote, 2 on-site), Still a colossal waste of time and resources to commute in, when all my suppliers are in different cities and states, and most of the folks I support are not in my office.

At my former employer (rage quit/retired in January of 2022) literally all of the logistics people aside from those who had to be in the shop were sent to work from home. And they didn't come back and the company is raking record profits - they *did* fire 280 people up front to get that PPP money that was only given to companies with less than 500 employees. So they fired all their shipping and receiving folks, live events technicians, purchasers etc and basically told the branch coordinators and people who spend time in shop to cover those responsibilities. And they did because of the enhanced productivity of those working from home, they covered the loss of 20% of their employees.

Unfortunately a lot of us older workers didn't *want* to (or need to) work 60 hour work weeks for 40 hours pay doing shipping and receiving or cleaning bathrooms so we quit/retired. So right now they are back where they started, begging for vetted and competent employees in a market where you either cater to new employees or they'll just move across the street to your competitor.

It all changed in the years between 2020 and now.....it's an employees market.

I’ve WFH off/on for many years. Past 6 months I mainly go into office. The place is a ghost town. However there is still plenty of traffic. So, most people in the country are commuting.

If I wanted I could wfh more. I do wfh 1 to 2 days per week still

I’d much prefer to never work again but still get my same paycheck. That would be true freedom!

Also, I’d be willing to bet the 300 govt employees who left were probably the best workers.

Think about time spent in the avg life:

Eating, sleeping and working take up 70% of life. 30% left to actually live. Woohoo 🥳

If all these "work remotely workers" are so much more efficient - then do not be surprised when corporate America gives you that much more work to do and then reduces head count to match. I worked in industrial plant automation - if you can do the job at 100 yards you can do it at 100 miles and if you can do it at 100 miles you can do it in India or Brazil at much lower cost. When remote work started saw 35% reduction in white collar jobs.
