Looks like they sold it to a private company instead of a foreign country like Russia (Uranium 1). This might actually be an improvement and a step back from nationalized assets.

My fully cynical guess is the government sold the excess helium for pennies on the dollar to a company run by some senator's son or daughter who will then proceed to extract maximum value out of their fellow Americans.

Tr-mix gas for welding stainless just came back down to under $300 for a 280 cu/ft bottle. Guess I better head down and see if I can get my other 2 bottles filled before they stop selling it again.

Helium shortages/cost increase has a direct impact on the manufacturing of semiconductors. When I was in that industry, shortages were a concern but we never ran out, just had to pay more for it, a lot more.
