These hospitals aren't in the nicest neighborhoods - so add at least 30 min. commute minimum each way on the night you go were permitted to go home to sleep (and back at crack of dawn). Surgery especially stayed the old boys club the longest - probably until around the 1990s, specifically because only women got pregnant back then during their internships and residencies.

Some folks will probably say I'm totally wrong, but with medical malpractice being just about one of the biggest causes of not natural deaths in this country, perhaps someone should look long and hard at the stupid practice of insane work hours which only benefit the top money men.
I mean we don't allow truck drivers to work more than x hours in a shift or xx hours in a day but somehow it's a "good thing" to make your medical staff work crazy stressful hours and harsh conditions and such all for the glory and income of the insurance companies?
I'd suggest that one ones in charge are indeed evil.
