Looking into the 1-8 for a nice mid range AR for competitions that would suit that best and curious the difference between the NX and the ATACR. From people who utilize both. Is the ATACR worth the extra $700 and what am I giving up by choosing the NX?

I like both for different reasons. The NX8 is a really small lightweight LPVO while the ATACR is bigger and more robust. I really like the NX8 on little setups where I'm looking to keep the weight down and not too fussed about illumination, while the ATACR goes on a rifle I'm running harder and I'm using the illumination. Those are the main things for me personally, but YMMV.

Why is illumination a factor?

Yeah, I was looking at the specs too, but in your video one scope has significantly wider FOV
I haven't actually measured fov, but in that video I posted in this thread, the atacr is aimed at a hill significantly closer than the flat area by the river than the nx8 is aimed at. Pretty impossible to draw conclusion from. However, I did take this photo series:

Diopter on both is set to give the same performance at 1 and 8x, in each, for me. My diopter typically runs -0.5 to -0.75 over my right eye.

All good - must be misremembering things about the NX8 as it’s been a few years since I had one.
My main takeaways from owning both at the same time is that zone 3 of the nx8 on 1x has some distortion vs atacr, but zone 1 is true unity while it's 1.05x or so on atacr. Depth of field is better on atacr at 6-8x as outer zone 2 and out on nx8 has some distortion and atacr is flat. Eyebox on atacr is better by about 10-15%. Atacr feels bigger on gun that datasheets suggest. With the fcdmx in the nx8 now, I have zero inclination toward the atacr and sold it and bought another nx8. Glass clarity goes to atacr by maybe 10%. Not enough delta to matter. Light gathering at dawn and dusk was similar.

I’m a NF fan. But most say the vortex 1-10 is better. That’s what I run.

I have both the G3 and he NX8 and as of three weeks ago have competed with both. (4 years with the G3, three stages with the NX8)

The g3 is a little easier to get behind, both “eye box” and eye relief.

The NX8 has better illumination and is lighter. I also like the FC DMX better than the Vortex MOA BDC but that’s not saying much.

I did get a little sucked into the scope with the NX8 on one stage last month and had to go back to a targets at 100 yards but I have very little time behind it. I run a top mount red dot on all of my scopes for square range shooting, or some 75-150 yard stuff that’s larger. Thinking half sized IPSC. Etc. This can mitigate that to some degree.

I looked at three ATACRs before I bought the G3, and had the G3 for years, swapping between it and an NSN ACOG/RMR and then bought an NX8. None of these hold me back at my level.(not saying much) but the size and weight reduction of the NX8 is nice. It’s kind of like a ACOG on steroids. Would have been nice if the NX8 was a 34mm but then it’d probably be too close to the ATACR to make sense.
