Any mountain bikers out there 2.0

You guys are killin me. All the talk about getting back in shape has me feeling like shit.
Had TKR (aka Total Knee Replacement) surgery 5 months ago. Lost most of my cardio , all I can do is walk , sometimes a slow jog.
Breaking my Niner mountain bike out as soon as the weather clears up. Not sure how much I’ll be capable of ? Have to avoid crashing too , all I need is to fuck up what I unfucked.
At least you had to have surgery is why you lost your cardio....i just lost mine from being lazy.

Why would it be any more dangerous than a normal MTB? In my experience, high speed crashes that get you hurt are usually while descending, where the E part of the bike isn't going to help you any.
This…

The crashes I’ve seen are from people doing more than they are ready for. The only different with an ebike is that you get to that point sooner.

Lots of newbies want to jump on an ebike because it’s easier to pedal but it’s also easier to get to higher speeds you aren’t ready for.

Mine shuts off assist at 20mph which I believe is standard for class 1.

My neighbor hacked his or something he says it'll go about 40mph, I had it up to around 30mph was going faster than traffic in a 25mph lol

My neighbor's e bike does 30+ mph on flat ground

Then there's electric scooters:

Yeah, that's a lot different from the pedal assist E bikes that I'm used to seeing. And a lot of our trails are on Forest Circus land, so no e bikes are allowed as they are a motorized vehicle. State and National Parks in NC have laws and limitations as well, those vary.

I have a ecells one that goes about 40 mph. There’s settings in the controller than you can mess with that unlocks it’s full potential.

I grew up dirt biking. Although you pedal these bikes, the weight of a lot of these e-bikes are NOT really comparable to like a down hill mountain bikes. So I treat it like a weak pedal light weight dirt bike in terms of its handling.

I’m not reading through this entire thread(not yet at least). Has anyone here built their own unbranded carbon or titanium mtb from the ruskies/chiners? I’ve read quite a bit about them and for the last several-ish years they have been quite a good value along with being able to customize to your heart’s content

It sure doesn’t take long to lose cardio , takes much longer to regain. I went from running lots of miles per month , riding my bikes as x-training , to not being able to walk without lots of pain. Knee replacement ain’t no joke….rehab was brutal… Add to the fact I’ll be 72 , it’s going to be a long row to hoe.
All it took to get motivated was being told I won’t be able to run or bike
again. Hate being told what I can’t do.
May not run 7-8 minute miles again , or knock out 10 mile runs , but I ain’t throwing the towel in.

Finally found a good deal on a very lightly ridden Yeti SB140 LR.
XXL Bikes are hard to come by especially in like new condition.
I’ve been keeping an eye out for almost a year and it finally surfaced.
Not sold on the XO1 AXS Transmission just yet, but we’ll

see how it goes. Carbon wheels will be a nice upgrade though.
Should be fun tomorrow afternoon!

Been a while since I had time to get a good ride in. This Yeti is the best XC bike I have ever ridden, bikes just keep getting better. I know 12 mph average isn't impressive in general, but on the gravel roads here in Newton County Arkansas it's not too shabby. I was averaging 13 at the half way point but a rugged climb at mile 80-85 kicked my dick in...

Thanks guys, not to down play it because it was a good day out but I have been doing this for a very long time so it really isn't anything too crazy. It just takes time and anyone can do the distance. 12K feet of climbing especially as steep as the climbs around here are add to the day for sure, but my thing is trying to push the pace and not fall off too bad during the ride.

I truly feel that humans are built for endurance, probably the main thing most people are missing from their lives. I am not myself if I'm not able to get big rides, runs, or hikes in. It keeps me feeling and performing younger than I actually am. NFQ!

Which Yeti would you be interested in? This is my first and so far I'm very impressed. I have owned a lot of super bikes over the years and this one is very nice. My wife road a SB110 that was a ripper with that switch infinity suspension. This is obviously a flex stay like the Blur, Epic / Epic Evo and others. I think for an XC bike it's the way to go.

I'm finally getting in summer shape again, meaning I did 17 miles with 2 other old guys today on EMTB's on blue difficulty trails. Ha sounds silly compared to Jbell.

One of these guys is 79 years old, was a triathlete, and it's amazing how well he does.

But this week a friend my age, 65-ish, is visiting from out of town. We fished, shot airguns, and rode, so it was a fun week.

Has anyone rode a bike with a Pinion gearbox? They look pretty cool and pairing it with a belt drive seems to make the drivetrain bombproof and almost maintenance free

View attachment 8721018
I have, a few years ago. Great in concept but meh in execution / actual use. The generation I rode would not shift under load basically at all. Maybe they are better now, I don't know. Belts are great but not better than chains IMO. They have to be tensioned pretty high which adds drag / drops efficiency (very very bad in my world), they can be cut by rock impacts (but I guess chains can break, however my last broken chain was in the early 2000 or maybe even late 90's, so not really a thing anymore), belts get noisy in dry dusty conditions (water helps but not for long in those conditions). In my humble opinion a pinion drive is a solution looking for a problem, same with all variations of electronic drivetrains (except in a few specific use cases). I have owned everything from 3X7 Shimano to 12 speed XTR, XX1 Axis and Transmission, Red XPLOR 12 speed, etc (haven't tried the wireless Shimano yet but the paint isn't dry on it yet) and I choose to run mechanical XO1 Eagle. It is lighter, less expensive not if but when I break it or wear it out (I go through at least 1 cassette, 2 chainrings, and 2+ chains a year at minimum). Do the math on mechanical eagle vs transmission and then compare the weight of the two groups. Nevermind I never have a battery die on a ride, have to charge batteries, or worse have a communication issue. My mechanical shifts quicker and much more reliable than any electronic drivetrain especially after it's nasty because I can finesse it if need be.

So I guess you could say I'm not a fan...

I have been eyeballing there new ebike drive system. I have a buddy that has it on his 160mm travel bike and he swears by it. It's the latest pinion, I can't think of what frame it is at the moment. It's a high pivot, and doesn't need a tensioner. He was running a belt on his originally and said the belt gets squeaky/gritty and it annoyed him. There were some tensioning differences between the two setups and due to that the chain was preferred.

I'm gonna try to go ride Sunday and next weekend. Finally on a decent roll getting in better shape.

Give me a shout and we will ride sometime. You need to get to Horseshoe Canyon Ranch and check out their trails, they have been working on them quite a bit lately.

I’m pretty sure shifting under load has been worked out by this version

And your list of consumables per year is exactly why I’m looking at this. Even doing my own work that stuff adds up to the cost of a gearbox pretty quick. The Gates belts last essentially forever and the only maintenance the Pinion needs is an oil change every 10,000 miles

I’m not a cross country rider tracking weight by the gram so the weight isn’t that relevant. It’s also on the lowest, most central part of the bike where it will be less noticeable

I’ve actually built this already in my head. The bike clanging around my noggin is one of the unbranded Chiner titanium hardtail frames with some sort of mid-grade build. Then trickle in various carbon fiber and titanium pieces/hardware as funds allow

All valid points. If the shifting is improved or isn’t a factor for your use case a gear box drivetrain, Pinion or whom ever, can be a very solid system. If you do build it please post up the details and pics. I love all bikes, I am looking forward to it!

Have you ever ridden, or at least fondled, one of the unbranded carbon bikes? Those are intriguing as well. The only thing is I’m not sure which ones are available with the newer, slacker geometry

I built my daughter a DIY carbon MTB frame years ago, it was perfectly fine. However it didn’t get ridden hard.

I am back to riding my old GT for exercise 8-12 mile trips. I logged almost 100 miles in the past month.

I bought this bike while living in Boulder Colorado in 1998. I was hired to work on “the nicest house in Boulder” and the owner was Rock Shox founder Paul Turner and his wife. Paul told me what bike I should buy and gave me the Judy shock you see in the photo.

In 2013 the shock needed a rebuild but I could not locate parts. Experts were telling me to scrap it. But being that it had sentimental value, I was persistent and found a guy in Idaho, hippie tech suspension, who rebuilt it for me.

Obviously by today’s standards, the bike is a bit of a relic but I love her.

They are privately owned, probably better let these two walk. I think they keep the two llamas and two donkeys around to protect the sheep & goats. These are my “home trails” now. If anyone is in North West Arkansas Horseshoe Canyon Ranch is worth checking out!

Well like I said Paul told me what to get. It has served me well. I would like to convert it to disk brakes though. If memory serves those were just coming onto the scene in “98”. I remember Paul’s wife talking to someone about how nice they were on the switchbacks……

Anyone using one of these for misc carry and CCW on the bike?

I actually rock something almost identical to that daily on the bike but from Vertx.

Ive been a big Vertx user for shit 15yr or more. Their bags are built to last. I own 10+ Vertx bags, endless accessories and my oldest is a Gammut Plus that I still rock daily for work with a G19 in the hidden compartment along with 2 backup mags..

Have one of their slings in every vehicle with a Sig or Glock and 2 mags and the necessities. Cash, surefire, basic medical, Leatherman, battery pack.

Here what i rock on the bike. Its their S.O.C.P. fanny and I rock it as a sling with a P365 Micro and 1 backup mag...

I just got back from getting my 2 Giant Trance X Advanced E+2 post break in service after my son and I putting 175 miles on them...

I also had some new parts put on mine. Raceface ERA carbon bars, Raceface stem and locking grips... replaced the Diore brakes that came on mine with 4 Piston XT brakes and XT rotors..

Fucking love this bike. So much fun. And allows me to fly fishing in super remote areas you cant drive to and was always too far to walk..

I am considering using mine for hunting Antelope and Elk this fall.

I have a QuietKat Ibex i got for the deep backcountry fly fishing. Put a rack on the front to put waders, boots, rod tubes, cooler, etc in. 4.8" tires, full suspension. Rip in 20, 30, 40 miles in hiking shoes. Get to location. Gear up and fish. Then at dark, pack up and rip out.

Thing is a beast, but more for your trail riding or fields, etc.. long distances and carrying gear no problem. But I had issues a few times with mine on rugged mtb trails, rocks, etc.

Broke a chain a few miles in first week I got it, bent derailed hanger on rock 20 miles in another trip. Couldn't shift, luckily got out on one gear. Then the last straw was a blown freewheel 5 miles in. Had to push and carry the heavy ass 80lb bike back to car. Was furious

So I got these 2 Giants. Stupid light CF frames, crazy distance capable. Climbing monsters. Less than half the weight of my ibex .. so no loading a rack with gear. But we just got back from Maine. Wore waders and boots to bike in 20 miles. Orvis pack with 2 rod tubes. We did that every day we were there and bike were excellent. Still had 65% battery left riding in Eco for 30- 40 miles each day.

I wish there was another way to do the chain drive train other than having a derailleur hanging down but it is what it is. I managed to bend the derailleur on two of my bikes. The bike shop just bent them back but the shifting is barely acceptable on one of them. It's kind of a back up ebike(the old Bakcou Storm) so I left it alone not wanting to dump money into it. I basically only use it nowadays for getting firewood back in the FS via the trailer I have for it.

Suppose also until they refine a transmission better than Pinion is now I'll stay with old conventional drivetrain. Though it would be neat to have a transmission that was smooth and seamless between all the gears.

Are CVT transmissions being developed more> saw a video about a prototype one time??

I'm not super happy with my GX Eagle because the shifting is delayed slightly and when it's cold out it gets more sluggish or a shift is ignored like the signal didn't arrive so I have to push the shift button again. The battery on my ebike supplies the power to the GX motor so I don't need to be concerned there, however I changed the battery on the shift controller which didn't help much(a little better) at the time last winter. That same controller battery is still in my bike and the shifting is fine now because it's summer time.

Now you know what I was meaning when you first got the QuietKat last year. Your QK and my Bakcou are somewhat similar. More of what I call a "truck bike" except not up to serious MTB trails but still good for hauling stuff.

Glad you got the Giant EMTB's! These type 1 EMTB's are much more fun.

Besides the old Storm I have 3 EMTB's now. Most of my friends and family either don't have the money or the interest to buy their own EMTB......
Mine are the Orbea Wild in Medium which is my go-to, Husqvarna Extreme Cross in medium but it's more the size of a large(great for bike parks), and YT Decoy in small size. My daughter and DIL are less than 5 feet tall and one friend is 5'5", all which the small is best for. This is a good situation because even though these people aren't in shape for riding MTB they can handle EMTB for a couple hours.

I have a group of older guys I ride EMTB with and we met a guy our age riding a nice Yeti MTB so he went with us the next week. It about killed him and we had to keep stopping to wait for him a lot. I'll be curious if he ever rides with us again or if he buys a EMTB.

Yea that's what the new Quietkats are. They had them on the floor at my bike shop when I bought my 2 Giants. Guy tried talking me into one I said no thx. Got a great deal on 2 Trance X Advanced E+2 that were $7699 on the tag.

I think you need to evaluate what you will be doing with the bike and from there choose the appropriate model. Jbell is seriously super human regardless of what he says so keep that in mind…..much respect.
I found a nearly flawless used 2024 XO build with carbon wheels….they are out there. Nearly 4K off retail. Not hating the AXS transmission now that I’ve got a few hundred miles on her. Pedal Harder!
