I needed a reason to justify rebuilding my 300 black out. The true reason is I fell in love with the rifle I built my girl using burnt bronze on the receivers, Geissele DDC parts, and FDE furniture.
My 300 black out was a cheapish Aero build. I’m now using a Vltor MUR upper without FA, Geissele DDC super charging handle, Geissele MK4 DDC 9.3” rail, and Wilson Combat 11.3” barrel. The lower is an Aero M4E1, Rise 535 trigger which I may replace with a Geissele SDE since I have them in all my other rifles, Magpul K2+ grip, Law folder, carbine buffer, Magpul SLS stock. Other than that I was just thinking of adding a Steiner Dbal. I’m just now worrying.. will the Steiner objective lens sit high enough to clear the Dbal??
EDIT: MRO isn’t popular with night vision and the bottom half of the sight picture from the scope would be blocked by the Dbal D2. I’d need a 1.93” scope mount which would place a top-mounted RMR WAY above the bore causing huge issues at anything other than zero distance or close. I’ll be using an Eotech EXPS3 on a Unity Riser and eventually a G33 in a Unity flip to center mount.
I’ll be using a SilencerCo Velos LBP 762.
I plan to stick with Hornady 110 grain VMAX over 19.8 of H110 and work up a sub load for 220 grain SMKs using N120.
Does this sound like a decent NV set up? I know 556 especially out of short barrels has a lot of blast so 300 black out seems perfect especially with subs.

Thank you for all the help!

Looks like if I want to stay with the standard height scope mount my options are MAWL and USNV Designate IR-V.
At $1900 for the USNV or $3600 for the MAWL versus $1200 for the D2 I may just need to buy the 1.93” scope mount. Unfortunately that’s going to put the top mounted RDS REALLY HIGH.

if you want to ride pimp style, get the sight specifically for a 300 Blk run under nods: https://wilcoxind.com/products/combat-systems/laser-aiming-devices/product_combat_boss-xe

the eye safe version still has a very excellent laser

the main draw is that the IR/Vis laser, and the reticle zero are all co-aligned and have two separate zero settings with the flick of a lever. (subsonic and supersonic)

That does look incredible!! Unfortunately I’m assuming that also comes at an incredible price. Any first hand experience with one? Actually… $4300?? Is that right? That’s not much more than a MAWL. I may need to look into that. I don’t mind spending a little more for one and done.
Thank you for the suggestion!

There are vendors that sell the Eye safe variation, which is the standard civilian market model. $4300 sounds about right. You’ll want the Ergocto dual-lead switch that has the junction box connector and a surefire lead to connect a good white light. Last I checked the dual-lead switch was around $120 because it’s not just a dumb clicky switch but programmable from the unit.

I’m saving for one for my own shorty subsonic setup.

I only get to run NV occasionally. I don't have any equipment of my own. Still, it seems to me that running that LPVO is going to be a waste of space and weight budget. Running an LPVO just on the off chance that you'll need magnification kinda leaves you having to accommodate a piece of equipment you likely won't need very often.

Maybe its just because I need more practice, but the LPVO gets in the way. I'm not crazy about magnifiers, but they sure do the job on an NV setup. Just think of how much easier life would be setting that rig up, if you didn't need to worry about that LPVO.

This is honestly the exact conclusion I came to. I got the rifle together (minus the ASR mount) and once I get all the night vision stuff together I think I’m just going to run the MRO on a 1.93” mount and a Dbal D2 at 12. I’m not interested in being a trail blazer

If you already have a 1.93 mount, cool. If not, what I usually do is just throw a cowitness mount onto a 1/2 rise. Ive found it the easiest way to get my dot and magnifier to line up without spending a bunch of money.

Do you feel a magnifier is worthwhile? I’ve got so many rifles with LPVOs and I don’t see ever shooting this past 200. I don’t think I’ve ever used a magnifier since it also magnifies the dot.
I’ll buy the 1.93” mount just to get the anodized FDE look lol. I could’ve used the ADM Delta I’ve got laying around for this scope, but I love the Geissele DDC. I may actually spring for the D2 since it’s back in stock at my discounted price. I could run around with the visible laser and some goggles and get some good LARPing in lol.
Suppressors and ASR mounts should be approved in the next couple of days.
Apparently the site won’t let me upload a photo?

Man, you have me talking about all sorts of stuff than I'm not wild about. I get what you're saying about the magnifier behind the dot, but still ... having a magnifier comes in handy sometimes. Not when you're using NV, but when you aren't, even a low percentage 200 yard shots gets a lot easier with a magnifier.

Have you ever run an Eotech/magnifier combo? I know Eotechs are a love em or hate em thing, But I have to admit that they are the shizz for running NV and for putting a magnifier behind them.
Mind you, I do not own an Eotech, for many reasons. Well, a few anyway. That sight is just one of those things that you love to actually shoot with, but hate everything else about it.

As for the mount, that's a whatever floats your boat thing. I paint ALL of my stuff. Rifle, mount, optic. Ive gotta cover up the scratches and it makes me look cool.

Actually I was forced to use an Eotech on my patrol carbine. I think for that reason (and the hate they were getting at the time) I switched to red dots. It was an EXPS2 anyway so it wouldn’t work with night vision.

I greatly appreciate you bringing this up. After several hours of research the consensus is pretty clear. The MRO is garbage for night vision. Looks like I’ll be getting the EXPS3 and a Unity riser in FDE. I’ll wait on the magnifier and unity tactical mount in FDE. That’s another $750. I need to get some use out of this Geissele mount lol. The PVS31 binos are like 13k and the D2 is a little over $1200. I blew 4k last week between a scope and 2 suppressors so I need to settle.

It also looks like people are saying to stay away from remote switches with the D2 and instead use the rear mount button. So I now know I need to mount the light on the right side and I’ll use a a Unity Axon for that. Sucks that I tossed the box for the Geissele mount. That was expensive. At least I won’t be making any more mistakes! So thank you! It looks pretty cool now (muzzle device inbound with suppressor) and the finish looks weird in the pic due to all the oil seaping out. It came out really well.

I can't comment about switches and stuff. Whatever NV gear I've used was borrowed and have only really shot passively.

It looks like its coming together.

Which suppressor are you going with?

I wanted something a little more hard use than the Flow 762 that I’m using on the SCAR and Grendel’s so I bought 2 of the SilencerCo Velos LBP 762. It’s been pending since the 20th and apparently my trust photo hit 1 year old today so they shot it down.. today. I immediately updated the photo in my trust so hopefully they’re approved by the weekend.
Given the discount I can get in the tan Eotech EXPS3 and the Dbal D2 I’m strongly considering just picking them up. If I do that I might as well grab the riser and white light set up too and start familiarizing myself with everything.
Do I buy the stuff now and get pissed at myself again for blowing a load of cash? Or do I wait a little bit and take the chance of having to pay substantially more?
I’d have to go back and check, but this is my 4th relatively expensive rifle build in probably 5 months. I built an 18” Grendel, a 13.9” Grendel, and then a 14.5” Grendel for my girl and now this. At least I reused the lower, trigger, BCG, scope, and buffer tube though

On my night rifles I have;
5.56 11" SBR, Aimpoint T1 in a Unity mount, MAWL
5.56 12.5" SBR, MRO in a Geissele mount, MAWL
5.56 11.5" SBR, EXPS3.0 and EOTech magnifier, Holosun Iris3
300 BO 9" SBR, XPS3.0 and magnifier in a Unity Riser and FTC mount, DBAL I2

The EOTech is BY FAR the best option with NODs. No question. The T1 is usable but the tube is so small it is annoying. The MRO isn't awful with the tall mount, actually better than the T1 for me. The tall mounts really do make a huge difference when trying to get behind the optic with the tube. I actually used to use a Larue RISER on the stock for better aiming during the day with the tall mounts, but trying to get behind the optic with the NOD was terrible.

One of these days I'll move the other 2 rifles to an EOTech as it is truly by far the best option. Getting away from the RISER helped on the MRO and T1 but I honestly didn't even realize how bad it was until taking a TNVC level 1 class. After that first night, those things came off. I am taking their level 2 class in September, I am sure more things will change after that.

Yeah, man. Those Velos are nice. I view suppressors as disposable and have stuck to traditional baffle stack cans because they're cheap and they typically work well.

They do suppress well, but it’s 95* here currently (and most of the year) so anything not course related and with in 100 yards is done at an indoor range. I was able to tune rifles to work pretty well with my traditional cans, but the first time I shot with the Flow it was like the clouds parted. Very good suppression, no gas to the face, no tuning, no increased recoil, and very little soot accumulation in the mags and lower. It was amazing. And it’s insanely light. The sparking (at least what I can see during the day) went away after a couple hundred rounds.
I bought the Velos specifically because of the Flows poor performance on subs and the fact that when we do the rifle and pistol courses stuff gets banged up a little. I seriously doubt it’s anything that would bother the HUXWRX, but I prefer to have a suppressor for each host.

I appreciate the input! I’m leaning towards grabbing the Eotech, riser, D2, and Modlite set up just to have the rifle set up and I can get somewhat used to working with it.
I’ve got the Geissele MK4 on this with the pic rails at 12, 3, 6, and 9, so I’m concerned that the Arisaka 45* MLOK mount might interfere with the picatinny sections. I may just have to mount the light at the 3 O clock position rather than 1:30 tucked under the Dbal. I just wish they came in FDE. It’s not a big deal, but it’s a bit of work to mix up and apply cerakote for a light mount… things have to match ;-)

I got to talk to the local NV guys. They made some great points, but I’d really like to roll them past the group. Hopefully going Monday night to check out the setups. They have everything from inexpensive Holoson laser/illuminators with dual PVS14 to a full power MAWL with L3 GPNVG 18 setup.
The Dbal D2 is heavy and requires the use of risers. It would require the Eotech, riser, and magnifier to get 3x mag, but would be difficult to shoot prone and run another $1500.
The Arisaka DIRV has a great rep with them (2 have it) and it allows me to keep my current scope setup. It’s about $650 more than the D2 and weighs half. For passive shooting they say the RMR is perfect (obviously not comparable to an Eotech) but passive shooting would be like back up sights it seems? So $500 for RMR and $100 for scope ring mount. I’m going to grab the Modlite PLHv2 with modbutton tonight and mount the light at 3 o clock on the pic sections. It’s the longer 18650 version so hoping to mount it forward a bit alongside the suppressor to limit shadow. Still looking at NVGs but right now I’m planning on the L3 PVS31A with the 2376 FOM. Seems like a good middle ground. Anyone see anything I’m missing?

I told you what my experience is, so take my opinion with a big grain of salt.

With the talk of a ring and rmr mount it's kinda sounding like you're going from a dedicated NV rig to an NV capable rig. They are two different animals.

On an NV capable rig, its more of a general purpose rig that will accommodate NV, if you wind up needing it. These can be nice, but they are heavier and are not ideal for NV.

The rig I use for NV is pretty much slick. Red dot on a 1.93 mount. Magnifier on a qd mount so I can throw it on if I need it. I'm not wild about running active. Once you get over the thrill of first using the setup, it becomes a whole lot like running a visible laser. Bouncing all over the place trying to get on target. I much prefer passive. Its a lot like day shooting, only at night. Still, if you have the budget, a laser is a good backup sighting system for NV.

As I said before, many of my gripes are likely due to inexperience, but I really dont like the flip to center magnifier mounts either. I like the area behind the dot to be clean so I'm not banging into crap.

I do run a single cell light, just in case I need it, but I dont run it from a tape switch. If I need it, I just turn it on with the clicky tail cap.

My rig is an 11.5 with nothing more than a dot, the light and a K can. Nothing special about it, but with the magnifier on it, its pretty capable for general purpose use and I'm not fighting anything when using NV.

Loved my MAWL and Aimpoint combo on my primary 6.8 pig gun:

… before I put a scope/offset micro red dot on that rifle, and got a (relatively) cheap Holosun IR/visible laser for another rifle now chambered in 5.56mm that inherited the Aimpoint and flip to center magnifier; the MAWL is a much better laser, but I actually prefer this setup when shooting on NVGs:

But now I’m looking at that Wilcox Boss now for another one of my 300BLK uppers…that’s a pretty sweet bit of kit!

Funny you posted this. You were right. Slapped my buddy’s DIRV and it was not… what I wanted. Apparently I wanted a “night vision rig” as you stated. You’re insanely good with this stuff. I have the Modlite PLHv2 on the way as I know I want a dedicated white light. Right now I think it’s between a “full power” LaserSpeed M6TR and a Holoson Iris 3 and I think I’m heavily leaning towards the Holoson. While I’m not opposed to spending for top quality, I’ve got several super expensive systems that have 100 -200 rounds on them. I need to focus on using and take a break from spending. I’m expecting to spend 12-13k just on the NV goggles. So back to the Eotech and magnifier with Unity Riser and FTC. I’ll use this like this for a bit and I’ll grab the Eotech stuff next month and probably sell the Steiner P4XI and Trijicon MRO for cheap. I’ve had both for at least 5 years and have less than 500 rounds on both.
In short thank you for taking your time with me on this. You saved me a fortune.

Damn!! That is insanely nice!! I love those Six6 systems!! The Boss is also insanely sweet, but isn’t it $4200 without magnifier and it’s still “low power”? I found a well regarded night vision retailer not too far from me and I believe he has them listed as well as the Iris and several others and the night vision binos I’m interested in. I’m going to have to make a few trips there before I spend anymore money.
Why are you leaning towards the Boss?

I have 2 civi MAWLs and they are excellent. I cannot honestly say I would change anything about them. Not even make them full power, as inside of realistic night shooting distances they already tend to bloom. FP would be even worse.

I have 1 Iris 3. For the price, I’ll only get these moving forward. They are close enough to the civi MAWL in performance for a freaking 1/3 of the price.

I obviously have no issue paying for quality. But seriously, why pay 3600 for a MAWL when you can 3 damn Iris 3s for the same price? I’m not a war fighter, at best I LARP in the dark some times and take a few classes a year. It makes no sense to pay for a MAWL today.

It honestly pisses me off that Holosun is kicking everyone else’s ass in every market segment they step into. I’m all for buying American, but not 3x.

One thing I found with 300Blk is that the twist rate plays a huge impact on the ability to run supers and subs. With a 1:7 or 1:8 twist, you are really only dealing with elevation changes between supers vs subs. But with a 1:5 twist (MCX Virtus) you need an optic like the Boss that can change elevation AND windage. At 50yd, I get 6-8"+ of windage difference between a 220 subsonic and a 110-130gr supersonic. Not even remotely close enough to work.

You saved me a fortune.View attachment 8736104
Nah, man .... I've just been shooting for more than 40 years and honestly, actually doing something a few times is worth more than 1000 hours of internet research. This is where knowing guys that you can borrow from helps a lot.

I've run the Iris, but I dont have enough experience to say what's good or not. It did what I needed it to do. All I know is that I don't like heavy.

That Steiner is a sweet scope. You may regret getting rid of it. If it has the P3tr reticle in it and you got it when it was around $500, you should be able to come close to getting your money back. If you got it after the price hike, you can expect around $450 to $500 for it, based on lack of use.

Good luck with that MRO.
