I still change my oil regularly and don't slam the doors on my beater car. Just because it isn't the best of the best doesn't mean you shouldn't make it the best it could be.
Well yes, that’s why you got recommendations to just polish it up.

But as I said, it’s your rifle so do what you want with it.

Cheers

I'm surprised at the amount of you that think the rust pitting could be saved
Why make the thread then?

“Can I save this”

….”sure”

“I can’t believe you think this mid level barrel that I asked about saving, that I can also exchange for free, can be saved”

You sound like someone that doesn’t even know how to change the oil in your beater car.

There is Absolutely nothing wrong with it.
The barrel extension needs polished anyway.
After you've done polishing you'll never notice it had the little rust.
There are even "stop rust" chemicals to put on it, for lazy folks, & then polish it...or not.

You could put on a new, not needed, barrel extension, but that takes some specific tools and not much adjustment for gas port alignment..if it doesn't align very close.
Plug old port & drill a new gas port, or adjust depth, or recut headspace with your lathe, mill, finish reamer, gauges, and other precision tools to check and verify, that "everyone" has when assembling, and reworking their ARs...send it back, maybe get one in worse condition...maybe get one with a bright barrel extension and a crappy bore.😀

If this were mine or here, I'd pull it from the barrel, blast it, and throw it back in a park tank.
No need to even pull the barrel extension..
Just plug the bore and sand blast ...good as new in a few minutes...I'd still polish the barrel extension when done, but it ain't mine.
Totally nothing wrong with it, easy fix...but sometimes it's fun to mess with the knuckleheads on this site.😀

The shape of the barrel extension itself isn't all that bad, but I also see what looks like rust inside of the extension, with some stains around barrel itself. I'd be wondering if some sort of chemical or salt water or whatever came into contact with it. What do the barrel threads look like under the extension? No way of knowing without pulling it. If they gave you to option to send it back, that's what I'd do.

Maybe I'm just a little overly cautious with this sort of thing. I saw some weird forms of corrosion after Katrina. I sure as heck dont store guns in cases with foam inserts anymore.

Yet it isn't used.

 Some people here...
Yes it is used. Its been sitting in non climate controlled storage for over a decade. GI barrel feed ramps are not chrome lined. If it was stored properly it would look new. Its not new , its used. Used by mother nature.

It would be some work but doable to clean the corrosion off and would actually give you the opportunity to clean up and even polish the feed ramps, which some builders do.

Chances are the one they replace it with was stored the same way, so if its just some corrosion on the ramps and everything else looks good, AND you want the barrel for a specific build, just fix it yourself.
