Hey folks, i saw a thread for SDW from like 6 years ago, but wanted to ask about some updated information from members here.

I live in New England and SDW is about a 3.5 hour drive for me. So i need to plan my visit out somewhat carefully and i had a couple of questions...

1. Do you need a LRF there, or are all targets at known (accurate) distances?
2. I'll be going as a visitor renting for like 3-4 hours, once you are booked, you can't be bumped for a competition scheduled last minute or anything like that?
3. Is there anything else i should know before booking and making the trek out there?

My current plan is to hit this place on like a Friday, then drive up to longrangeshots.com on the Saturday to work in some more skills at slightly further than 1000yds at longrangeshots.com

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I shoot there quite a bit for PRS comps. I would suggest a rangefinder because ranges are not marked and they have quite a good selection of targets out to 1000 yards.

It’s a great range run by a good group of people.

I’d also recommend moving this thread out of the PIT.

Secondarily, is it open beyond september? I tried to book in October and it wasn't available to select.

There are plausibly more-appropriate fora here: https://www.snipershide.com/shooting/#advanced-marksmanship-unit.19
And "out of the pit" b/c my first reaction to your title was "He wants to visit with that big Anatolian warrior sheepdog that took out the pack of baby killing coyotes last year? Kinda fanboi but OK." :D I haven't lived upstate for sixty years so I don't have any idea about your real request.

I've shot there many times. I live in New England as well.
  1. The steel was laid out every 100 yards, but it is easy to lose track, so an LRF can come in handy.
  2. They have a variety of target sizes at most ranges.
  3. It goes uphill. By the time you get to the 1,000-yard point, it is quite an angle, so make sure your bipod has long legs or bring a riser that you can put under the bipod.
  4. During PRS season, don't try to go on weekends. That is when matches are held. Go mid-week and call them to let them know you are coming.
  5. They shut down for the winter. It happens around late October or earlier.
There is a range in Littleton, NH, that is even nicer in terms of distance and complexity. It has targets almost to 1,300 yards. It is also extremely challenging due to the wind. It costs a couple of hundred dollars a year to be a member. It is called Alderbrook. Check it out. I don't go to Sheepdog any longer.

Very interesting, any hoops to jump through to become a member at Alderbrook? And do you know if they keep the longer range open longer into the fall/winter than Sheepdog?

Just fill out the form. They ask for references, but I had someone call me as part of the process, and he became my reference. They keep the long range open a little longer than SDW, but it depends on the winter. It is really difficult to get to the shooting positions in the winter due to the large amount of snow. They don't plow out the roads because they are all dirt and steep uphill. I've made it up in my Jeep Rubi, but once was enough.

Awesome information, thank you. I'll reach out to them at some point probably next season. From my location (just beneath Boston) it's:
* 185 miles to longrangeshots.com
* 162 miles to Littleton, NH
* 202 miles to Sheepdog Warrior

So it's a tough call. I have a truck so winter doesn't scare me. But the idea that i can only use the long range like 6-7 months out of the year kind of sucks too.

I live in RI.

It is further for me to get to Littleton.

For the $200 per year, it is short money to have access to a range like Alderbrook for 7 months. Moreover, Alderbrook matches are a lot of fun.

Sheepdog is an hourly rate. In two days, it is almost two hundred dollars. Never heard of the VT place, but it seems very like vaporware, judging by their website and links that don't work.

I wish you luck in your quest.

Understood and from that perspective it makes sense. LRS isn't vaporware yet - i spoke to the owner and booked a date in October. Now wether it pans out or not, we will see.
