Computers don't do random numbers well. Years ago I remember reading about one of the big tech companies using lava lamps to create truly random numbers (instead of pseudo random numbers). It's a neat story and I suspect that some variant of this approach is still in use today.

Cloud flare uses one, but they were patented by Silicone Graphics in the 1990’s. Called a Lavarand.


All the one time pad ciphers for the Agency used to be generated by taking cosmic noise (leftover energy from the Big Bang) and turning it into letters and numbers.

Lots of ways to “get” random. But by definition a machine cannot “create” random because it’s a machine. So nothing about it can be random. It can only have the appearance of random.
