Salt salt salt, not just sodium but all the electrolytes.

You can drink enough water that it washes out your electrolytes. Drink Liquid IV pouches or make your own with magnesium, potassium, calcium and sodium.
Three of the very best recovery, or boost foods are bananas, salty potato chips and chocolate milk.

Bananas contain, starches when a bit green and glucose when very ripe, with lots of potassium. I eat lots of bananas.

Salty potato chips have fats, carbohydrates and lots of sodium.

Chocolate milk is parhaps the finest recovery drink, having everything needed for recovery from a demanding physical exercise.

How do I know these things. I am a competitive cyclists. Riding a 10 or 20 K Time Trial can take every bit of everything otu of a cyclist. If it doesn’t, the cyclist hasn’t ridden hard enough. If the cyclist has ridden hard enough, he needs every bit of recovery foods/drinks he can get. I know, not only from research but also experience. Even jsut a 5K time trial. Think of the effort to run a 100 yard dash, then consider this level of effort has to be maintained well beyond the aerobic threshold for 7 to 8 minutes. 10K takes a bit of rating, but for me, 17 minutes. And a 20K, a maximum effort above the aerobic threshold for 35 minutes. Its draining.

So, you are in essence preaching to the choir. I’ve been there, aggravated by the fact that I have a historically low electrolyte level. In he last 15 years, not once in annual testing has my sodium level been IN the normal range, being low every time. Do, I take salt?

My son always laughed at me with the statement, I like a little French Fies on my white stuff. If it isn’t heavily salted, I start looking for more “white stuff.”

So, this loss of heat resistance is not about hydration or electrolyte intake, something deeper is happening. it might just be old age catching up, but after all this jumble of fall is finished, next year, I am getting serious about cycling training, knees be damned.

Pensacola beach 2018, the very start of a time trial. Yes, it’s hot in the aero helmet.

I'll chime in

I shoot in a desert. Hydration starts the night before. Half strength Gatorade is my choice when it's hot. Or alternate water and 1/2 strength

Pick up a tub of Gatorade powder and mix it into a gallon jug of water.

I pay attention to my urine. Color and quantity

Never chug liquids. Your body can't absorb a lot of liquid at one time. Part of why a camelback is great as you can sip every 5-10 minutes.

If you chug a bunch you can end up with the squirts. Anti diarrhea meds dehydrate you. They make you get rid of the water and make dehydration worse

(Yeah - - buddy learned that one the hard way-- dehydration- pounded 2 liters of water - got the shots- picked up diarrhea meds--missed 2 days of class and the emt almost sent him to the ER)

Sunflower seeds are great if you can eat them and not eat all the lead off of your fingers.
