Just curious if anyone has been able to get hands on one of the Stag Pursuit actions that Aero Precision has on sale for $599. I realize it’s not a $2k action but thinking about doing a budget friendly build with it an a proof steel barrel for some long range plinking with the option of swapping barrels and calibers. Appreciate the feedback! Also with their discount it’s $555 to my ffl which seems stupid cheap.

I just picked up a complete barreled action that was a "blem". The only "blem" I can find, is when I pulled the barrel to inspect/weigh things, there's a tiny little spot where the nitride looks thin between the lug and the action. Here's the scoop:

The bolt body is a Solus bolt body, I see no differences, and the bolt heads are the same as the Solus also.

The action itself just shares the form factor with the Solus which shares it with the 700. This is a lot closer to a Zermatt/Bighorn Origin - the recoil lug is not integral and is pinned, the scope rail is not integral and is pinned, and the action has machining that lightens it up significantly compared to a Solus (it's closer to the weight of a Solus Lightweight). Overall feels very well made, no rough edges, all the angles have been properly machined so they feel neither overly sharp nor overly rounded/beveled.

Running the bolt, it feels pretty smooth - not quite as smooth as my Tikka's, but in that neighborhood. I expect it will smooth out with some use until it is as smooth as a Tikka. Bolt lift isn't overly heavy at all (lighter than my Tikkas in fact), and the 70 degree thing is nice (though I would not avoid a 90 degree action just to get a 70, but since it came with it, yay).

The bolt pattern for the scope base(s) matches that of a front Rem 700 base, so you could use a pair of front 700 bases or Talley rings or the like if you were looking to shave a few ounces.

The barrel that came with the barreled action looks decent in the bore scope. It's not a hand-lapped/match grade something something, but it definitely looks cleaner and better machined than an of the typical Rem/Win/Savage/etc barrels I've looked at. To be fair, I've seen some very (very) ugly looking barrels that shot great, and some very pretty ones that didn't shoot worth s**t, but - more ugly ones shoot bad than pretty ones if we're doing statistics (also known as damn lies, LOL), so that's a plus.

Weights:

Bare action as-shipped (action, bolt, lug, scope rail): 33.0 ounces.

Action + trigger group as-shipped (action, bolt, lug, scope rail) with an old Walker trigger I had laying around installed: 36.32 oz.

Bare action without the scope rail: 31.1 oz (that's a small hair over the stated weight of the Solus lightweight).

Bolt all by itself: 13.2 oz

Pic rail with screws and pin 1.9 oz.

The fluted barrel it came with (18 inch 308 in my case) is 2lbs 11.7oz. I weighed it 3 or 4 times on 2 different scales, because it seems WAY too fat to be under 3lbs, but it came back at 2lbs/11.7oz every time.

If I had paid MSRP, I would be thinking "damn, I should have got an Origin", but at the blow-out pricing, I feel like I stole it.

I ordered a 223 bolt, and my current plan is to get a pair of Shilen Select Match barrels for it, one in 223 for training/practice/fun, and one in 7mm-08 on the odd chance I ever decide to take it hunting (I probably won't, I have Tikka's for that game, LOL).

I'll shoot the 308 barrel and see if it's stunningly accurate or not, but even if it is, will probably sell it - 18 inch fat-ish barrels just aren't my jam, 24 +/- inch barrels in sporter-ish contours is.

YMMV - but that's my feedback.

copy. I received mine yesterday. looks decent enough and I can't find anything to really complaint about on it. I have a 26" 6.5 Proof steel barrel for it.. spun on easy enough and going to finish torquing it down Saturday and verify the chamber and that it'll cycle.. I need adult life to stop happening so I can get a chassis and finish building it out lol.

If you figure out how to get Adult Life(tm) to leave you alone, please share the secret, I have the same problem all the time!

I got my blem 20” 6.5 barreled action yesterday too. Action feels good, but I haven’t put the trigger on yet. Barreled action no trigger was a hair over 5lbs on my scale. I agree I can’t believe that barrel is only 3lbs. As far as I can tell it’s a solus without integral recoil lug or scope base

My 308 18 inch was 4lbs/12.39 oz as-delivered. Which is about on the money at about 1.2-1.5 oz per inch of barrel, plus the 6.5 gains a little because of having a smaller hole drilled in it.

I think you meant to say 60º bolt throw. The Solus is 60º, and if they use the same bolt, it should be the same.

The Origin action is now a 70º throw. The 1st Generation versions were a 90º I think?

Never messed with a Stag action, but I do have 5 Solus actions, and they're great. I have not had a single issue with any of them.

When/where did you hear the origin wenr to 70°? I have 5 of em, last one was 14 months ago, and it's 90°. I have origins, tl3s, Ti3s, none are 70, nor does it say anything about that on their website. Unless you have some insider info to share........

Probably my bad - 60, 70, the numbers are very close, LOL....

I think I was thinking of the thread talking about 75° bolts for Defiance and Impact, or maybe a bunch of folks were just taking about it on here saying it would be nice to have… I can’t remember.

I think the shorter bolt lift thing is just in the "bonus" category anyway. I own Rem 700's (90 degree I think?), a few Tikkas (70 degree), an old Mark X Interarms Mauser (not sure, probably 90 degrees?), have owned Savages and Kimbers and all sorts of things over the years, and now the Stag Pursuit (60 degrees, apparently) . When running any given bolt gun, I grab the handle, lift till it hits the stop, pull it back, then push forward, and I don't even think about how high I did or didn't lift the bolt handle. Just sitting in my shop or on the bench fondling the action, sure, a shorter lift definitely feels nicer, but I wouldn't for .0001 seconds weigh the degrees of bolt lift in my decision to buy (or not) any gun or action.

My $0.02 - worth what you paid for it. :)

Shorter bolt throws always equal heavier cocking forces when using the same firing spring weight, no matter what.
Sure, and if I try them side by side, I'm sure I can notice that some are heavier to lift than others. But none of them are even remotely close to so obnoxiously heavy to lift that it's a problem (as long as I'm not loading too hot, LOL).
