Elk Hunting Rifles, What are you Using?

Just got back from my elk hunt yesterday. High shoulder dropped her where she stood.

Winchester m70 action/trigger
18” proof carbon
Diligent Defense Enticer L-Ti
Sig dmr 3-18x44
Manners eh-1
Area 419 Arca rail
Area 419 atlas bipod
Hornady 7mm WSM 162 ELD-X
Pretty sure that rockin mustache killed her 😁

Just kidding, congrats and awesome build!
How much work was it to put a m70 in an Eh1?

Wife will be toting (that’s bullshit, I will be carrying it for her) this pea shooter
Ti3 med action
20’ proof carbon
Xlr magnesium with the carbon stuff
Tbac dominus
Mark 5 HD
Berger 156’s @2880
That's exact load I run in my saum, cept 22in, the 156s have leveled elk, only sample of 3, but straight dumped them.

It’s a great load, been staking em in on steel. I have no doubt it will do work on any bull inside 1k. The 156 Berger is phenomenal. I shot it in my 260 AI in the nrl hunter finale and it performed incredibly

I bought an Seekins Element Hunter 6.5PRC for my antelope hunts. I have a bunch of 156’s that plan on loading but with Elk season approaching rapidly I bought some Berger factory 140 hunters.

I found a promising spot that I thought with patience and persistence I would have an opportunity for a close broadside on a bull and wanted to give the little PRC a try.

350 yards, perfect broadside. Hit first rib behind the shoulder. The bull staggered 6-8 steps and piled up on the entrance wound side. I do gutless, so did not attempt to find the bullet.
True, he traveled further than any other Elk I have shot, but they all die when double lunged. The bullet obvious sent fragments to his interior, good lung blood flowing from the the downside of his mouth.

Congrats!

Two questions. Where did you hunt? Do you know how much that barrel weights by itself? If not, what does the gun weight?

Thanks
Thanks!
Wyoming Area 6 between Laramie and Wheatland.
Don’t know on barrel weight. I’ll look to see but I think the bare rifle without scope and rings is right about 7.5 lbs.

Leaving for my first guided elk hunt in the morning. 22 hour drive, you put this much into a hunt you don't risk it on one rifle. I put three in the truck for good measure:
- 300WM, McMillan Edge stock, fairly light McGowan barrel 24", 9.X lbs. Primary rifle. With fewer mods from factory this rifle took my first elk at 618yds.
- 338 Edge, McMillan stock. 30" barrel, 14 lbs. Took my last elk with this at 738 yds, 10 miles one way from the truck on foot. Not going to do that again.
- 358 WSM wildcat - this was my lightweight rig but now a tad heavier than the 300WM. Nice heavy hitter at reasonable ranges.

What problems do you anticipate your rifles having that you feel the need to bring 3?

M1 Garand hasent failed me yet for Elk hunting. Granted I like getting close (25 yards and in) from my archery days but I have gotten a fair amount at 3-350 yards. Running IMR 4064, 150 Horndaddy Interlocks or Speer 165gr SPFB, Starline brass, No.34 primer giving me respectable 1.4” 8 shot group. Schuster adj plug and she just chugs along.
But this year will either be a Yugo M48 with a LSR mounted Burris 2-8 or a K31 irons. Not sure yet.

I'm a 7mm guy. I load for 7mm-08's for my kids and have a 7Mag and a newly acquired 7PRC ultralite rig. I'm fairly confident out to 800yds with my magnums. My longest kill shot was 600yds but have a number of kills in the 40-400 yds range. I primarily hunt Elk and Deer. I don't feel the need to go up in caliber at those distances.

I just purchased a Christensen Ridgeline FFT in 7PRC. I did so just to try something new and to have the increased stability with the faster twist rate to run a long monolithic bullet. It isn't trivial to add a new cartridge when reloading. There's the brass and components, the dies, etc...

What do you consider "extended ranges"? That might help inform the best path forward for your needs.
