Still trying to figure out the tree.

So, my totally armchair assessment of why the tree fell is that the pilings the iron was attached to were pulled up when the bridge collapsed. Most likely from corrosion and inattention. The trees are obviously grown right up to the bridge and were upended.

fk, doesn't county maintenance maintain ANYTHING? That bridge needed some trees wacked and crap burned, and dirt dug out.
Hippies don't want bridges and damns so like CA, they don't get maintained, and act surprised when they fail. Their response it, tear it down, do NOT build a new one.

Yeah, no clue here. I believe the tree falling explanation, just doesn't make sense that the truck collapsing the bridge would pull the tree down with it.

With the street view link above you can sit right in the middle of the bridge and look all around. Looks like some of the vegetation may have been cleared since the street view image was taken.

Takes $$$ to budget. Old bridges and county roads in general are things that get minimum attention.

From the article it was inspected and reported in "fair condition" last year.

The 92-foot metal truss bridge with a wooden deck was built in 1879 and most recently renovated in 2006. It’s listed in the Maryland Historical Trust’s Historic Bridge Inventory. It carries traffic on Carroll Road over Carroll Branch, a tributary of Big Gunpowder Falls.
...
Records show the most recent county inspection, on Dec. 5, 2024, found the bridge in “fair condition” overall.

The trestle bridge sets on concrete pilings set deep into the soil at the banks. A tree growing literally on top of the piling or nearly could definitely be felled if the piling failed upon the collapse.

Again, totally spitballing here.

Joke is funny. I had my index finger do that once. Boss man asked me why I had to take a few days off for an "infection ". I was waiting for my finger to explode. Fucker looked like a brat. Apparently a staph infection that cleared up after a couple days of going to the infusion clinic for some I.V. antibiotics. Years apart I've gone for 2 separate M.R.S.A infections. It's been close to 8 years but now if I go into an urgent care, I tell them when we meet, "you will not prescribe me oral antibiotics. They don't work. " .

During the last one I asked to talk to the infectious disease doctor. "What do I need to do to not get this again?" And "How's did this get in my house?!"

Answer to killing it. Bleach your towels, sheets and blankets, wash in hot water. If you've had an outbreak, wash in Hibacleanse once a month for a year. Crazy good antibiotic ointment you q-tip up your nose after that shower.

How did we get it in my house? My ex had her mom move up from her retirement home in Florida and my boy got it.

Zach Rushing has the perfect solution for this: (NSFW - Use Discretion - F-Bombs galore)

Took my dad to the store last night. On the way he told me he'd just come from one of his great grandson's baseball games. He said "I had to leave, I couldn't take it anymore. I feel bad for these kids, they can't catch, they can't throw, they can't hit. Don't they have fathers? No wonder there's no Americans in the major leagues anymore."

I'm right there with him, it's painful to watch. The funny thing is the boy (my nephew's son) feels the same way. He lives and breathes baseball. At 7 years old he didn't "make" the all star team, they had him play in the 10-11 year old all star game instead. Playing with his own regular team kills him! Watching him on the field you can see he's just as bored and disappointed as we are. lmao

Staphylococci are a regular skin colonizer.

Just so happens that yours are drug - resistant.

ETA:

My, my… Didn’t anticipate the snarky outta thuh blue response below!

That smell that comes from your typical “fat stinky?”

That smell that comes from filthy beards?

Either Staph or Strep running amok.

Also very suggestive of poor hygiene.

Are you so fat that you have yeasts in your pink, raw crevices?

Do you have the Dyebeetus?

Well, the yeasts are outcompeting your Staph and Strep there.

But you can still be certain it’ll be Staph that’ll get your legs and pecker chopped off…

Are you one of those types who always needs a PICC fer the Vankermya - sin because yer NP was too dumb to trial Bactrim?

Are you one of those fat stinkies with poor hygiene?

I'll guess that the tree fell and hit the top chord of the truss while the bridge was loaded with the weight of the truck, and that was what started the failure ( a non-redundant structure, one chord fails and they all go). It was like dominos falling after that.

We had one happen like that near here, except that it was a Fire Engine responding to a TC who was under the bridge and hit a pier that wasn’t in the water (Sacramento River, Jellys Ferry). A real E ticket ride for the crew. It took several years to replace and really hit the County Budget.
