54 years ago, I first heard this on an old turntable. Though neither EltonJohn or Bernie Taupin spent even a single heartbeat in the military of any country anywhere, they got it right, and stirred certain chords within my battered soul. To this day, when I hear this song, I can smell the beer-soaked floor boards of the dark bar where the two vets, one young, one old, meet. Indeed, I have seen theses conversations played out again and again in reunions, and gatherings of warriors, some broken, most just missing their comrades and youth.
