Gunsmithing Barrel channel too large

Personally, I would have let it be. The extra air in there will keep the barrel temp even all over. Float too close and you loose air circulation under the rear of the barrel and your POI might change as the bottom of the barrel heats up. Besides, who wants a dirt spec to cause a bad shot?

    Expected Accuracy at 100 Yards?

Re: Expected Accuracy at 100 Yards? OK, here I go... You can get a lot more than that out of your setup. Bed it and make sure you have a good crown and that you barrel is up to snuff. Your trigger should be under 2 lbs. I will let my pic speak for itself. If I get a group much bigger...

    455 action specs

I was curious how tight my action was so I measured some areas and was surprised at what I found. The clearance between the bolt and the receiver is right around .0005". No typo, it really is that tight. The bolt face clearance is .009"and the bolt face recess is .035, so the headspace is...

anyone using a mildot scope on there 22 trainer?

Re: anyone using a mildot scope on there 22 trainer? I use a mil scope but in moa mode. Mine is MIL at 20x, but if I set it at 16x it goes into moa mode and each mark is 2 moa. I find this quite handy for ranging targets. It is quite possible to get within a couple of yards and make a...

    Empty shelves....

I went over to Fleet Farm today to get some material to repair some burst pipes and decided to look at the sporting goods section. To my horror the shelves were almost barren of ammo and the gun racks were almost empty as well! There was a bunch of shotgun ammo, but everything else was gone...

    Best Budget 22lr

Re: Best Budget 22lr Ok, I read it all, now what? I was in the same boat as you when I first got into the rimfire game. I wanted a savage because they were cheap and had ok reviews. I had been to the local stores and had looked at the savages. I wasn't really impressed, but they were...

Re: .22LR keyhole?? Those babies are spinning as fast as a dremel. They will fly straight and true until they hit something.

The 1,000 yard .22 rimfire challenge?

Re: The 1,000 yard .22 rimfire challenge? If you could put up a cross bar at say 50 or 100 yards to use for an aiming point, that might work. That way it could be shorter. Just thinking outside the box. Maybe put the rifle in a vise and adjust the vice with threaded feet? That way it...

    Rimfire Scope......Advise?

Re: Rimfire Scope......Advise? I have adopted this mindset: I finally got the perfect scope, now what do I put under it? The scope on my rimfire right now cost me $500. The next one will be $1500.

The 1,000 yard .22 rimfire challenge?

Re: The 1,000 yard .22 rimfire challenge? You would have to jack your scope way up in the air to do it. I use about 24 minutes in my rings, but holy cow 300! I might try it if I can get enough range....

    Torque specs for 455 + Manners T4?

Re: Torque specs for 455 + Manners T4? I would stick with 30. I have a regular stock with pillars and 30 is enough to hold it good and solid, but not be super tight.

    5 shots 200 yards!?!

Re: 5 shots 200 yards!?! 8" is WAY too big unless you are shooting off hand. I like 8" off hand at 200 yards. If you are using a bipod or rested, go 3-4 inches. I would be very surprised if you couldn't do it.

Savage MKII shaving next round during cycling?

Re: Savage MKII shaving next round during cycling? The front edge of the bolt needs to have a bit of a radius put on it. You can use a sharpening stone for this. Just round the edge a little.

re-crowning for those on the fence

Re: re-crowning for those on the fence I have not played with other crowns. Besides, how can you group better than one hole? I do think that recrowning is a part of routine maintenance and should be done every once in a while. Not a chop, just a touch up. A crown will wear over time and...
