Definitely get the best rifle you can afford (within reason). An AI is a great choice; however, just make sure you have a solid budget for training, range time, reloading equipment, accessories, spotting scope, etc., etc., etc...........

GAP Crusader .308 50 Rd break in. Next five rounds .25 MOA.
PCR .260 5rd break in, next five round .4 MOA.
I run 20" and 23". The 20" is 1/10 Twist and throws 185gr Juggernauts in the 10 ring at 1000 and 175 gr. SMK's at .3 MOA at 100. I'm still breaking in the 23", but it throws 175 gr. SMK's at .2 MOA at 100.

I would argue that there is no greatest of all time; however, there are group of riflemen that mastered their craft for their particular shooting discipline. For example, anyone who is a distinguished marksman is on the list.
