    Awesome thread. This reminds me of the debate over cross drilling brake rotors for more cooling in the auto racing world. As it turns out the main reason racing teams cross drill their rotors is to reduce unsprung weight and not for better cooling.

    Could you have the barrel salt bath nitrited than ion bond after the fact? That way the bore is coated for long life and the outside has ion bore.

    I have betram brass in .338 edge. As it came from Bertram The shoulder needed bumped back .002 and the necks were sized down to .330. It is really soft stuff before I realized this I crushed two cases trying to seat a bullet. Primer pocket are also super super tight.

    As I sit here and think about how I shoot my long range rigs. 90% of the time it is single shot. Usually leaving the breach open for a few moment between shot to aid cooling. Next ELR rig will be a single shot affair.

    Cheap way to make a cheek riser

    Kydex IMO would be a better option and can be had for just as cheap off amazon or ebay. The metal though will likeyl add some weight a little aft which could improve the balance. Plus it is much more manly.
