Why Would Anyone Want to Shoot a Vintage Sniper Rifle?

hrfunk....your preamble to the question sums it up well..... plus the sense of history and personal satisfaction of shooting these rifles well...an altogether less "sterile" experience than shooting modern rifles (don't get me wrong I have an AW and a GAP and they are great tools)....is what...

    And Now, the Main Event....

pawprint - seems I was being too literal in my reading of the abbreviation "vs". The way you clarify it makes more sense. Thanks. Re: the enslavement of the brothers Schmeisser, questions of history, lying (by omission or otherwise) and writing history to suit one's own...

    And Now, the Main Event....

pawprint, I don't disagree with anything you say regarding the 7.92 Kurz round or the development of the STG44....the only issue is the confusing statement you made regarding the STG44 being developed to use an "AK47 vs STG44 intermediate round" What do you mean by this? The abbreviation...

    And Now, the Main Event....

Thanks, but you miss the point. The 7.92 x 33 Kurz and STG44 predate the AK47 (although not the development of the Russian intermediate round) by a number of years. The development of the STG44 can be traced back to the MkB42....... so to say "The answer was a rapid-fire weapon that used...

    And Now, the Main Event....

Am I misunderstanding this or are you quoting some unacknowedged source? The AK47 never saw combat in WW2 and was only adopted by the Soviets in the very late '40's. How could the Germans have developed the STG44 to use a "AK47 vs STG44 intermediate round"? Irrespective of the...

    No. 4 mk1 (T) questions

Morning MJ! +1 on not hijacking. If it's taken as that - apologies to the OP. Bottom line is the OP stated an intention to build a replica. Others chimed in encouraging him to forget a replica with prices for non-scoped No4T rifles for under $1000. Not saying it is wrong but IME they must be...

    No. 4 mk1 (T) questions

MJ...no burr under my saddle. And always enjoy your pics. :) Just really struggling to come to terms with the apparent difference in pricing/values on No4(T) on your side of the water. Hell.....you can't even by a POS de-act here for the kind of money being talked about above.......even...

    No. 4 mk1 (T) questions

Thanks DV. Having spent a lot of time in India from the mid '90's to mid '00's and seeing both L1A1 and SMLE's in daily use by the police in dust, dirt and monsoon with lamentable care I would personally approach any firearm from the sub-continent extremely cautiously.

    No. 4 mk1 (T) questions

Maybe I am misinterpreting what you mean by "Indian issue"...do you mean Ishapore made "T" rifles or UK/Canadian manufactured rifles that were allocated to forces in India? For clarity, No4(T) production was limited to rifles from RSA Enfield, BSA, Maltby, Savage and Long Branch. Laidler...

    No. 4 mk1 (T) questions

Not flaming....but what is your definition of a fake? Surely (to the purist) even a mismatched "T" with a different scope is classed as a fake? And....can you really find a genuine, shootable T spec rifle for under $500? I looked for a long time in the UK and never got close......you...

    No. 4 mk1 (T) questions

I would strongly recommend you buy two books before starting your project: 1) No4(T), An Armourer's Perspective 2) Telescope Sighting No32, MKi, Mk2 and Mk3 Both are by Peter Laidler. Peter gives a walk through on the use of the tool on Mk1 and Mk2 scopes. And yes...for graticule read...

Battleline Industries SAPR stock attachment on Magpul STR stock

blackmax - straight out of the box and without any recoil pad the Magpul compatibale SAPR adds a further 1 13/16" to the length of the stock. Magpul quote the standard UBR LOP range at 11.10" to 14.46" Standard Magpul pad is .55" recoil pad but I'm running the enhanced pad that is 0.7" thick.

    Vintage ammo?

Two ways to look at this: 1) Depends how it's been stored, if it's still in reasonable usable condition and is shootable. If I were putting it in a gun and using...not keeping as a treasured possession...why would I pay more than the going rate to do that? 2) There are people who...

    Favorite Bore Guide

Mike's guides are calibre and action specific and feature a sleeve that fits over your rod to minimize movement in the bore - also specific to the rod you use. An added bonus is that he is a great bloke to deal with. Always gives a shipment date and has never once let me down. Buy with...

    1941 Enfield

Try to get a No32 Mk3 that has the red W(waterproofed) and blue B (bloomed lenses) markings - the best of the bunch and possible for one man to zero on his own! Not cheap....but top of the tree Earlier scopes (MK1) were prone to backlash issues and the Mk2 still required you to grow an extra...
