Gunsmithing RE-profile/thread barrel hurts bore dia.?

Re: RE-profile/thread barrel hurts bore dia.? if the steel is dead, and the work is supported correctly, you can do just about anything to any barrel, outside work, inside work, but it has to be dead or completely stress free. If the steel retains residual stress after the original...

    Gunsmithing Bergara barrels

Re: Bergara barrels Ballz, well, for now I'm not doing private work, my mental and physical resources are completely spent on projects for Knight's Armament. That won't always be the case, once it tones down I plan to get the custom side myself going when time permits as central floria...

Gunsmithing Chambering a rifle - Reamer would bind???

Re: Chambering a rifle - Reamer would bind??? If they are lapped barrels, you will end up with a flare or bellmouth at the chamber end.. choose pilots wisely, always go smaller than tighter fit. check to make sure your tailstock is aligned, if that's kosher, bump your pilot diameters down...

    Gunsmithing Bergara barrels

Re: Bergara barrels Bergara is bit of an enigma here. I like some of the production methods they are using, is what I'd like to emulate somewhat here, but watching the video and talking to their sales staff at SHOT/IWA, they still miss the most basics of points when it comes to barrlmaking...

Gunsmithing A old timer needs some help

Re: A old timer needs some help Pale, if you sawcut just ahead of the action/recoil lug, about 1/4" depth or a little more, that will relieve the steel enough for you to remove the barrels in standard fashion without ruining the action...No heat needed, but you can 'warm' the action at the...

Gunsmithing Chucking up factory Remmy barrel in lathe

Re: Chucking up factory Remmy barrel in lathe Remington barrels can be snaky. You want to shoot it to 1500 yds, walk from the gun and place your own target...shoot...that experience alone will convince you need a spotting scope more than a rifle. and probably a bigger target.

    Gunsmithing Machines and tooling

Re: Machines and tooling Glen Have you had to make any changes on the hardinge to account for lack of spindle thru and are you using tailstock to chamber? I've got 2HLV-H and one turret that looks almost a capstan, big dovetail but seems to be a tad bid longer in bed then the 2nd op...

    Gunsmithing EDM chambering

Re: EDM chambering C, I could see a guy having to 100% every aspect of the chamber if done single point, not very productive..Like you the problems I don't see as much in body, shoulder, neck, but thereafter..You might be ok on larger bores, shotguns, but once you're under 30cal you're in...

Gunsmithing Why are barrels usually cut on an even number?

Re: Why are barrels usually cut on an even number? Maybe their working length tolerance is +/- 1.00", so when remington does give you a 23" barrel it's within their 24 or 22" versions.

    Gunsmithing EDM chambering

Re: EDM chambering Chad, Boring such small diameter holes is going to save no time over piloted 3 flute roughers, by the time you pick up the chamber with the finisher I doubt you've gained anything precision or production wise..Grinding, unless it was some sort of CBN form grinding slug...

Custom Rock .22cal Barrel: How Long?

Re: Custom Rock .22cal Barrel: How Long? I'd go the same as the barrel you are duplicating. Yes, the 22lr slows down in the barrel after 'x' inches, but if it's a good pipe that's a good thing. Actually to get good accurate performance from 22lr ammo, you prefer it to be well above the...

Gunsmithing Ordering a new barrel questions

Re: Ordering a new barrel questions Generally the unchambered blank length for a 24" finished would be 1.5-2" longer..Blank would likely be 26" long to start out.
