So, Mom and Dad Called Up ...

I still have one of those up in the shop attic. The base unit mounted in the trunk and a wire ran under the carpet up to the dash where the handset hung. You could remove the handset and pull the base unit from the trunk and run on battery power for long enough to go broke while walking on the...

    Gunsmithing Tool talk — Vises

I have a lot of vises in my shop but one of the handiest is this very old Yost vise I found at an antique shop a couple years ago. Pull the lever towards you and the vise swivels and rotates to any angle, then push the lever away to lock it solidly in that position. I keep this one mounted on...

    Blemished Bullets

I bought 500 of the Hornaday 168gr match "seconds" from Midway a couple years ago and the bullets weighed +/- 8 grains from the nominal 168. It took longer than it should to divide them into piles to make them worth reloading.

    MOA with Mosin Nagants?

The Mosin I built for accuracy is neither stock or vintage so I will leave that subject be. However, I have done my research on the available 54r supply along the way to get a grasp on my possibilities. One day at the range I decided to shoot a 5 shot group with each type of cartridge I...

Sorry, I thought that one was an Af, but after pulling the record up I have it listed as a Model B Serial number 4149.

    Gunsmithing Dial test indicator

Depends on the diameter difference between it and your indicator. Not very hard to make a split bushing on the lathe.

    Gunsmithing Dial test indicator

It is until you get the bore concentric to the spindle axis. ;) I was watching a video the other day and saw an indicator accessory that I'd never seen before. I think I gotta have one now. It enables you to dial in a bore with a dial indicator...

    Gunsmithing Dial test indicator

Yeah, it comes down to the bearings at the pivot, jewels at the gear pinions and mainspring tension, Usually to get all 3 is expensive. That's where the Peacock surprised me. The interapid uses a fairly complex inner works for needle control.

    Gunsmithing Dial test indicator

The beauty of indicating lathe work is that the indicator isn't actually used to measure anything (most of the time). It just lets you know when the runout is gone from your bore or range rod when you adjust your 4 jaw or spider, catshead, whatever. You could get by with a plain old dial...

    Gunsmithing Dial test indicator

My go-to indicators for use on the machines are Interapids as well, all are .0005". I have a .0001" and a .00005" (both B&S) that have only left their boxes a couple of times over many decades. My latest Interapid (312b-1V) was bought for $50 at a local flea market. Many years ago when I...

Gunsmithing Need advice from Master Gunsmiths

I've been a machinist for most of 48 years but have only been home smithing for about the last 10. You don't need fancy/new equipment for barrel work but the job is a lot easier to do on a good lathe with the right proportions for the barrel work to be done. Your father is a valuable...

    Precision Rifles.....show em!!

Some of my hobby gun-builds. I do all the machine work myself so there's nothing too fancy but they are all sub MOA shooters. Mauser98 Action chambered in 7.62x54r: Savage Model 12FV .223. Aluminum stock designed to accommodate a 10 shot magazine: Modified M-N action with my form 1...

Another Picture Thread - All Other Semi-Autos

"Those H&Ks are nice - but the AK derivative is strange. The partial gas tube is particularly unusual in my eyes. " That PSL (7.62x54r) was built for two purposes. One was to test out some theories about improvements to accuracy that were posted in a thread on a builders forum. The obvious...

    New old guy from Ohio

Thanks! I'll have to check those ranges out on the net. I'm in Centerville, south of Dayton. Cambridge is roughly 2.5~3 hours away but it might be nice to check it out sometime. The wife and I used to pass through Cambridge on the way to New Philly about 4 times a year to go antiquing, probably...

    New old guy from Ohio

Been snooping around for a few weeks, just made it to the intro thread. I've been building Cetme/HK rifles in various formats for about 4 years now and do a lot of custom machining for the gun builders on Weaponsguild for the same amont of time. I came to the Hide in search of good...
