    Model 70 into tac driver

Re: Model 70 into tac driver As for optics, yeah, fixed 10X is mainly for utility, perfectly fine. With scopes, it really comes down to what you want to spend, the options are limitless. Most of my clients go with Leupold and Nightforce for tactical rigs, but there are some less expensive...

    Issues after bedding

Re: Issues after bedding A couple threads is all you need for proper holding power. If you get longer screws, after installation make sure you check your action to make sure they don't impede it's function. If they do, you'll have to grind them down a little...and you'll probably be right...

    Model 70 into tac driver

Re: Model 70 into tac driver I like your attitude, build it the way you want it and keep Grandpa's action. As for a barrel, if you're looking to shoot out 1000yds, you'll want a heavy barrel. I would go with a Rock Creek barrel, M24 contour, 1 in 11.27 twist, fluting looks cool, but doesn't...

just building a remington 700 sps

Re: just building a remington 700 sps I would get an oversized bolt knob, easier to manipulate, faster to cycle, the factory 700 knob stinks. Also, if you like the high rings, keep'em. I personally like the higher rings because I like to keep my head more upright, it's more comfortable to...

    Model 70 into tac driver

Re: Model 70 into tac driver Surferman, if you want to do the build right, you'll really need both a stock and a barrel to start. If you get a heavy barrel, it may not fit in your factory hunting stock's barrel channel. If you get a big tactical stock first, it's going to look really goofy...

    Model 70 into tac driver

Re: Model 70 into tac driver I would recommend rebarreling with a good aftermarket barrel, going as heavy as possible, the biggest that will fit in your stock. Also, when doing the rebarrel, have the action/bolt trued up and professionally bedded. Get some good rings/bases, have the trigger...

Winchester Mdl 70 CRF vs. CRPF vs PF

Re: Winchester Mdl 70 CRF vs. CRPF vs PF Mod 70 CRF is the way to go for a hunting rig, my favorite action to build on. You can't beat the CRF, Claw Extractor, Cone Breech, 3-postion safety, and the simple trigger. If you haven't ordered a stock yet, I recommend the McMillan Pre-64 Monte...

Rifle Scopes Scope Rings - Potential Issue?

Re: Scope Rings - Potential Issue? I wouldn't worry about it. Worst case scenario, if the rings are too high and you run out of elevation adjustment on your scope, just get lower rings. However, I highly doubt you're going to run out of adjustment on that Vortex with a canted base. Also, I...

    Barrel upgrade

Re: Barrel upgrade Rebarreling is an expensive upgrade when you add in the cost of the barrel and the machining. If you want to get the most out of it, I would recommend having your action blueprinted, getting an oversized recoil lug and then having it professionally bedded to your McMillan...

Re: Scope caps touching barrel... Get higher rings, modifying lens covers is not the way to go.

    starting over! long range gun

Re: starting over! long range gun Excellent start, go for it. If you're looking to slowly build, the 700 is a great choice, you really can't go wrong. Most guys prefer the 700 in a short action, but if you're set on the .300 Win Mag, gotta go with the long action. Good luck!

    308 Muzzle Brake Advice Needed

Re: 308 Muzzle Brake Advice Needed All brakes work to some extent, although some much better than others. With a .308, you're never going to completely get rid of recoil. If you really want to get rid of recoil all together, I would buy a .223 or similar and then add a brake to...

Rifle Scopes Please help a New guy with rings and a base

Re: Please help a New guy with rings and a base There are plenty of good rings/bases out there, don't get hung up on a particular brand or finding the "best", any quality system will do, especially with a light recoiling .308. More importantly, I haven't seen it mentioned, is actually having...

    First build barrel question

Re: First build barrel question A lot of good ones out there, I use Krieger and Rock Creek Barrels almost exclusively, talk to Paul at Rock Creek, he'll take care of you. Also, with a 700, the bolt face can be opened up to accept the magnum cartridges if you so desire.

Remington 700 SPS tactical Stock Upgrade

Re: Remington 700 SPS tactical Stock Upgrade If you're tending towards versatility and cool factor, go with one of the quality modular stocks. If you're thinking of a more traditional "workhorse", go with a no-frills Manners or McMillan and have it professionally bedded. Also, I'm an old...

My first build. How did I do?

Re: My first build. How did I do? I would bed it for sure...along with a good trigger, yeah, your groups should shrink further yet. The added weight is your friend, creates a more stable platform, absorbs recoil, and takes longer to heat up (i.e. the barrel). Nice build.
