Sleuthing the Federal Gold Medal match load... Mk 316 Mod 0?

Have you by chance compared the water capacity of a disassembled FGMM case vs your reload case(s) (after resizing)? Yours should be larger, which wouldn't help finding the cause . . . but I'm having trouble accepting the primer as the sole reason.

Anyone manuf. die cases/holders for dies with Hornady LNL quick-change bushings?

They fit in Hornady die cases and those are sold empty too.

    question about headspace inconsistency

Neck to 750 without bringing the rest of the case above 450. If you don't hit 750 (long enuff) there's no useful annealing . . . if the rest of the case gets over 450 it may not be able to take the next firing. Just wanted to make sure you read up first, and didn't jump right into it.

    Faster than imr 4064

I think the other folks are steering you right . . . with Lapua brass at ~56.0gr (water) capacity and a COL of 2.800" Quickload shows ~103% fill. So it depends on your case, but you can probably shake it down shake it down for a bit more capacity. In a bolt gun you *should* be close to ~2400...

    Fire at powder plant?

No one said the fire accounted for everything . . . and to cut that Trapshooters' thread some slack maybe the fire occurred after :) Spend an hour or so . . . Interview with Chris Hodgdon

    Fresh Reloads v. Stored Reloads

I always thought it gave them something to do while the barrel cooled down :)

How do you know when your rcbs chargemaster is breaking bad?

In Digital, I've got a GemPro 250 (~$125) and an A&D FX120i (~$550). The GemPro does the same thing sooner than overnight . . . dunno about the FX yet. Point is, I don't think any digital scale in the Chargemaster's (scale) price range would do any better. Dunno how high you'd have to go...

New rifle, new brass...working up load prior to rifle arrival.

My experience with new Lapua 308 brass is that it is very consistent piece to piece including case length at ~2.007-8. After sizing and the first firing in my chamber, the case volume changes (increases) and the cases resize to about ~2.011. So I developed a load using new cases and a bunch of...

    Yet another OCW help thread

Yes, you are. You are looking for a couple of consecutive charge levels that produce good groups with a similar group POI. Using that as guidance, choosing a charge level properly in that area allows you to reload with the knowledge that even with variations in powder charge you will get good...

    30-06 Long Range Loads

Given your question, thought this piece "Terminal Ballistics Research - 30-06 Springfield" might make a good read.

would seating depth affect the OCW?

Practically speaking, if you've found a true OCW node pressure variations of that size shouldn't affect POI very much. I think that's part of the reason why once at the node, you just test to see if OAL variations at that charge weight tighten the groups up. The other part is testing multiple...

    Good powder thrower/scale combo

Had a Pact dispenser/scale, was never happy with its consistency (ie the scale). Last month it refused to calibrate, so I bought an RCBS Chargemaster. At first I wasn't happy with the RCBS - the scale would often say that the charge thrown was right on target, but weighing it on another scale...

    Issues closing the bolt.

Agree. Most likely insufficent shoulder bump. If you don't have a comparator, you can try screwing the sizing die in 1/8 turn more and resize/reload one of the cases that the bolt wouldn't close on. If it works smoothly, you've identified the problem and can then get a comparator to properly set...

    Max load questions.

Some people use max loads because they think it's cool. Others use max loads because they need the velocity for the task the bullet will be given. Some use max loads because they found it to be the most accurate load. I've noticed that bullets penetrate paper pretty easily, and don't fall to...

    Help getting setup for reloading`

Save money on the expensive calipers . . . get a cheap digital tool. Use the money saved to buy a good beam scale (eg, RCBS 5-0-5 and a set of RCBS check weights. The scale on the Chargemaster is not enough, and only the beam scale can be calibrated close to the grain weights you will actually...

Just did my first OCW & I need help analyzing it

FWIW, what troubles me is the "significant" change in POI shown by 44.2 compared to 43.9 and 44.5. It would be easy to call 44.35 as your node if the 44.2 grp were, say, 3 sqs left and if I ignore the extra shot . There would then be a wide charge range where the POI is virtually unchanged...

Inconsistent COAL because of case length?

If you are seating and crimping in the same die/step, varying case lengths prolly explain your problem. Try applying NO crimp, seat a few, compare OALs . . . any differences should only result from varying bullets shapes plus the inherent =/-.001 or so. Then either leave the rounds uncrimped...

    Help with OCW target analysis

The published OCW methodology calls for that approach. I could be wrong, but (A) some spotters/foulers are needed to start (and after mid-way cleaning), and (B) hard to publish a methodology that does other than recommend "choose a published max and start 10% below it to work up" . . . but...

What powder is in Federal Gold Medal Match?

To answer your second question, in my rifle N140 shoots the 168s as well as IMR4064, and shoots the 167s a tad better.
