    The 1,000 Yard Rifle

Probably about anything you own will go 1000 yds. I went to qualify at 1000 yds once, and I didn't have enough elevation in the scope of my target rifle, so I got my Remington 721 out of the car and qualified with that, shooting .308 Win with Berger 185 hunting VLD's. Any 260 or 7mm should do...

AI .308 Twist Rate vs Year of the Bullet

Upstate: The Berger website lists 1:12 as the "optimal twist", but the newer numbers Berger is using in their twist rate calculator shows a stability number of 1.34 for the 185 hunting VLD at 2700 fps. That is just a hair under the old generally-accepted stability number of 1.4. Berger is now...

    Could use some pointers.

Just keep shooting. Remember to back your eye away from the scope enough so that the black fuzzy ring of the vignette has the crosshairs centered in it. You do not want to see the entire objective lens, all the way to the edge. That means your eye is too close to the scope. This technique pins...

AI .308 Twist Rate vs Year of the Bullet

Definitely F-class. I think it will be uncommon to see a .308 Win rifle shooting 1,000 yards in F-class with slower than 1:10 twist. 1:12 is likely not fast enough for the Berger 185 or JLK 180, for either hunting or F-class. SMK 190 is a fine, accurate bullet, and may shoot accurately in 1:12...

    Barrel twist ??

Get the JLK 80. It has the best BC for an 80 gr, and it stabilizes fine in 1:7 twist. Also, the 90 gr bullet offers no advantage in wind drift, since the 90 gr is going slower, and the JLK 80 BC is so high. The JLK 80 should be jammed .010" into the lands to get best accuracy. These shoot fine...

AI .308 Twist Rate vs Year of the Bullet

1:12 is a hangover from the days when 168-180 grain non-VLD bullets were all that was expected to go down the barrel of a .308 Winchester. That time has passed. Now, F-class and bullet development have made 1:10 the norm. Even faster if you expect to shoot the 215 Berger hybrid (and get max BC -...
