    .308 BCG weight

Re: .308 BCG weight Aside from weight, I'm really looking forward to a shorter barrel. I don't mind a rifle fully loaded out with scope/bipod hitting 10.5 lbs. or so. But more than that and more than 20" of barrel are not great for working through heavy cover or taking any but prone shots.

    Jp rifle phone#?

Re: Jp rifle phone#? I think they're just busy. It took me several tries but I did talk to them the other day.

    .308 BCG weight

Re: .308 BCG weight Without being utterly ridiculous and compromising reasonable reliability, I'm trying to get down to as little as 7.5 lbs. This is a rifle meant for hunting and medium distance (300-600) target shooting. Right now, my best guesstimate is around 7.75.

Range Report Tried testing loads- tell me if I wasted my time

Re: Tried testing loads- tell me if I wasted my time Generally, while I don't like load testing on windy days, what you're really looking for is vertical stringing. That's not going to get skewed by wind much. Like Ring, I've found my best accuracy at close to max. I believe that's because...

Re: .308 BCG weight Thanks to both of you for the info. I'm going to go with the JP low-mass for sure.

    .308 BCG weight

As I'm doing my build, I'm trying to keep track of weight more or less. Can anyone give me an idea of what a .308 BCG (including the bolt of course) weighs?

Rifle Scopes Scope recommendation - 308 first build

Re: Scope recommendation - 308 first build Not sure I understand the desire for a QD mount on a long range bolt gun nor the refusal to consider something like the SS 5-20. That's a decent scope for a great price. Zero stop is nice but IMO is only necessary for NF compact NXS turrets or for...

Range Report Help with 308 load question

Re: Help with 308 load question Chances are the scope is good. I've never had a problem with a NF. So it may well boil down to the chrony under-reading the MV. As far as the bullet is concerned, Berger's numbers are ones I trust since they're calculated by Bryan Litz. If you can get a...

    New Rem 700 w/5R barrel - .308 or 300 win mag?

    New Rem 700 w/5R barrel - .308 or 300 win mag?

Re: New Rem 700 w/5R barrel - .308 or 300 win mag? I had one in .308 and really liked it. But as soon as I took the loads up in terms of bullet weight and charge I felt the need to replace the thin, hard pad on the buttstock with a grind-to-fit. It makes me wonder what one is like to shoot in...

Range Report Help with 308 load question

Re: Help with 308 load question Okay, I gotcha ya. Looks like you're running the numbers right in JBM. Sometimes altitude can get messed up, but being where you are that's not an issue! So looking at what might be going on, you may well have an actual MV that is higher. Or your scope may not...

    Range Report trajectory calculations

Re: trajectory calculations Just use JBM. If you need something portable, score a used iPod Touch (2nd gen or newer) and load an app on it. Or scrounge around for a used or cheap-ass Android phone. Load an app on it. It otherwise makes no sense to try to run the necessary calculations when...

Range Report Help with 308 load question

Re: Help with 308 load question The short answer is you really need to make that time to dope out to 600 if you're going to ethically hunt LR...unless we're talking pigs or 'yotes. But even then, wouldn't you want to be proud of every shot? More info would help...like all the settings you're...

    Cover gas block?

Re: Cover gas block? Thanks. Sounds like it's probably better to go with the few extra ounces to get a length with more room.

    Cover gas block?

I'm doing a lightweight .308 AR build - 16" barrel using a midlength gas tube. A 9" handguard will save a few ounces but leave the gas block exposed. I'm using a low-profile adjustable so not like I'd mount anything on the gas block. Is it better to cover it? Is it even something that needs...

Is it worth it to build a DPMS pattern AR10?

Re: Is it worth it to build a DPMS pattern AR10? From what I've gathered doing research and starting a custom .308 build (on a MATEN) is that it's a lot like the difference between stock and custom bolt-actions. If all you're interested in is a Rem LTR or 5R SS, there's no sense in trying to...

    Which 308 AR

Re: Which 308 AR Just out of curiosity (because I've already chosen to build off a MATEN upper/lower), would a Fulton Armory .308 be a reasonable choice for this scenario? In other words, are they as in between on quality as they are in between price of a mass-market (DPMS, etc.) rifle and...

    Bushmaster ORC .308 for $1100 -should I?

I can pick up a NIB ORC for $1100. It's not an AR that I'm drooling over, but it's light enough to carry around hunting. I'm not concerned about reach or accuracy beyond 350 yards. I'd like to replace the handguard at some point...assume that's not a big deal to do. Sure, I'd love to have a...
