    Thoughts on AR Comp powder?

COAL? Case Volume? Brand of brass?

.308 Overall Length Varation with 175gr SMK

Typically, those loading manual data often base on a 24" barrel, like Kickin45 mentions, and that's why you're seeing such a difference between you gun and what's in the manual . . . along with the difference in powder. Yes, the higher nodes are often preferred, but not always necessary. It's...

Exactly how important is case trimming?

How much that trim length effects the amount of interference the neck has on the bullet is one of several factors regarding bullet release. How much trim length matters depends a lot on those other factors. If you're just a normal hunter and plinker, it doesn't matter one iota. If you're a...

.308 Overall Length Varation with 175gr SMK

Is your barrel 20"? The velocities you're getting is just fine for a 20" barrel using IMR-4064. Federal factory ammo no longer uses IMR-4064, it's not a fair comparison. These days, Federal is using AR-Comp for both their 175 and 168 SMK's, which tends to produce higher velocities. .5 gr...

Exactly how important is case trimming?

Theoretically, yes. But to be able to actually measure and see the specific effect means you'd have to isolate it from the many other factors that are at play at the same time. When you look at the size of your groups, you're looking at the results for a combination of things occurring. . ...

Exactly how important is case trimming?

Typically, yes . . . never trimming can affect your groups in the future. Some of that can depend on how well you clean out the carbon ring that builds up in your chamber. As the carbon ring can, as the case length grows, make the case mouth act like act like a crimp on the bullet and that...

Hard Bolt Close for Shorter OAL

If you had removed you're parts and sized the cases accordingly, you're probably going to have cases that are longer than if you hadn't done that. That would make for even harder bolt life that you're reporting. . . assuming it's a head space issue having to do with sizing. I agree with XLR308...

Hard Bolt Close for Shorter OAL

You didn't say how many times that brass has been fired. . .??? That Hornady brass is probably springing back enough over time to where you might not actually have that .001 bump you think you have??? But if you're annealing after every firing, .001 bump can work well; I know because that's ~...

Where is everyone buying their precision calipers?

Just an FYI: calipers are simply NOT "precision" instruments. But they fit the bill for what we reloader do. You can get Mitutoyo calipers on Amazon, as I did. Just be careful that you don't get a counterfeit one. Here's a video that can help identify a authentic Mitutoyo vs a counterfeit:

    Annealing machine.........

Following blindly is what people do when they don't have any critical thinking skills and choose to follow someone who sounds like they know what they don't know.

Quick Anneal any users out there with reviews?

None of that is really an issue if you know what you're doing. ;) Flame annealing works quite well. . . again, if you know what you're doing. And it work works well for me matching hardness with virgin Lapua brass. :giggle:

    Annealing machine.........

Ignore the "orange flame" and let the neck glow for a second and you'll be just fine.

    6gt primer cratering?

Primers look fine, except for the cratering. It's apparently the firing pin hole letting the primer material flow into the space around the firing pin. If you get the firing pin hole bushed, as mentioned before, that will solve that problem.

    Recommend me a new scale

That's like my experience going from my ChargeMaster to the FX-120i. Not only did my SD's and ES's improve dramatically like that, but the speed for charging cases really wasn't hardly any different. I didn't want to spend $500 on a scale as I had already spent on other cheaper scales that...

    18" 6.5 PRC and 135 A tips

Yeah, it takes about 150+ for the barrel to speed up, which is about where my 6.5 PRC barrel did.

    18" 6.5 PRC and 135 A tips

That velocity for H4831sc is about right if you're shooting in pretty cool weather . . . like 40°F or colder. H1000 isn't going to do as well and get you to your expectations with that 18" barrel.

VLD stems don't go very far down the ogive either. :)

    RL-16 temp stable?

Yes, but not much at the muzzle. ;)

.308 Overall Length Varation with 175gr SMK

I don't know of any seating dies that are able to make contact at or near the bearing surface. That would be ideal, if it could be done. :giggle: Because my seating stems make contact very high on the ogive, that's exactly why I sort my bullet with a comparator that makes contact at the same...
