    .308 Winchester

Hmmm??? Interesting that your Hornady brass is at almost 58 grs H2O. Most of mine (though I almost never use my Hornady brass) is at 55 grs. Though a couple months ago a shooter at a table next to me was shooting some Hornady Match Black Nickel-Plated factory cartridges and wasn't a reloader...

    .308 Winchester

That Norma brass with its larger case capacity does help with some extra velocity! ;)

    .308 Winchester

Which brass of yours has less capacity? LC brass? How much less? My data I've recorded for my Varget powder, though a little dated now, shows velocity a little higher than what you're getting with 44.7 grs. as measured by a MagnetoSpeed (that's with 169 SMK's at a COAL of 2.903). So your...

    Question on bullet seating.

To answer you're question, IMHO, yes. . .but to the extent of how much variation there is in the seating. You need substantial variation to see it in the SD's. Probably the biggest factor here is, the difference in cartridge selection, which often is THE major factor. For example, a Dasher is...

    Question on bullet seating.

Hmmm??? "NEVER gotten 2 SD" in that time  Having been precision reloading for ~ 9 years now, my .308 has given me several SD's of 2 or less (all 5 shots or less). One 3 shot with an SD of 1.0 . And only once I got a 1.7 SD with 5 shots out of my 6.5 PRC. ;) LOL, yeah . . . I know...

    .308 Winchester

As someone who's use all these components and looking at where the center of the Mean Radius is, I'd suggest rest your 169 SMK's with 44.7 to 45.0 grs of Varget. The loads for those two targets look like they have the most potential. Also, the velocity you're getting for those two loads is...

    Quick Load

Hmmmm??? You really shouldn't try to start off with anyone's max charge weight. IMHO, it's best to use the lower of the high max numbers as a general guide and start testing well below that number. As mentioned, start with lower charges and work your way up and the best way to do that is run...

Apparent over pressure from mild load

I seal a Kestrel DROP D3 in the bottle of powder until the reading levels off. I know it's not a direct measurement of the powder kernel's moisture. But it's an excellent indicator and way to monitor changes in the moisture within the bottle that the powder is giving off...

Apparent over pressure from mild load

Since manuals for powder charges will use case volumes that's typically used, especially those from powder suppliers, your Norma cases hold substantially more. If you were using a data from Norma, then I'd feel more comfortable. If you're at minimum charge and you're cases have 3-4 grs more...

Apparent over pressure from mild load

You said your "GRT is showing a pretty mild pressure curve" and so does my QL app. In fact, the curve is VERY low. While you say you're at "minimum charge up to 53.5 gr", that "minimum is based on who's reported minimum charge and case volume? Norma case volumes are 3-4 grs more in volume...

    Berger 153.5’s

I'm pushing them at 2,980 fps (loading them long at ~.020 off with a COAL of 3.098 in Lapua cases, 57.5 grs N565). Shooting at distance and consistently getting less than .4 MOA. I think N565 and Triple Nickel are really good powders for this round. :giggle:

    Berger 153.5’s

I've found that the 153.5 has worked really well in my 6.5 PRC with N565. My experience is YES, they're pretty forgiving. :giggle:

Do you clean before load development ?

Yes, it's always good practice to start load development with a clean barrel (after just a couple fouling rounds) to get a good baseline. Things can change the more rounds down the tube, so you'd want to be sure you know where your starting point is. I wouldn't want to start load development...

What did you do in the reloading room today?

I don't wet tumble very often, mainly when the brass has a lot of dirt or mud on or in them and will use SS media to get the inside cleaned out. When I do wet tumble, I also only go no more than 30 minutes, using very hot water along with Dawn and Lemi Shine. If they're not so dirty, 30...

What did you do in the reloading room today?

Peening, even from wet tumbling, isn't the result of the media being used. It's the cases themselves banging against each other. The amount of brass to media ratio and the amount of time being tumbled that's a play. Overload the tumbler with brass and that brass is going to bang around...

    Need UPS for FX120i

You're right about just putting the weight on the scale and I guess I should have been more clear how I was using the check weight. Because that calibration procedure is so simple, that's what I do verily often for the reason I stated. :giggle: Maybe that's one of the things that keeps mine...

    Need UPS for FX120i

I often use a 100 gram check weight before starting my powder charging session, just to be sure calibration is where it should be that I'm getting the same measurement from one session to the next. But that doesn't seem to have any relation to the issue of drifting during a session. . . ???

    Need UPS for FX120i

And I assume you have no heating or air-conditioning going on and moving air around while doing this. I've left my scale on for weeks, using it intermittently and had no drifting problems. The outlet my scale is plugged into also has a few other electronics plugged in (e.g. computer, monitors...

    Need UPS for FX120i

What type of lighting are you using (LED, Fluorescents)? How long to you leave the scale on before you start using it? I find having my scale on a somewhat heavy piece of granite works well at keeping it stable and resisting vibrations as I load. When I power up my 120i typically have to...

    .308 Winchester

Thanks for the thoughts . . . some good ideas there! I've always been a fan of, what I'd call "real hunting", like taking game down inside 200 yds. And like you, I've always used jacketed lead . . .has always been my preference. Because of my age (78) and some physical limitation these days...
