    SINGLE OR DOUBLE BASED POWDER.

Re: SINGLE OR DOUBLE BASED POWDER. The double based powders are more temperature sensitive and possibly harder on the bore. The Hodgdon Extreme powders are a popular single based powder for long range shooting.

Rifle Scopes Why you HAVE to bed mounting bases on Rem 700's!

Re: Why you HAVE to bed mounting bases on Rem 700's! The poor fit on that Rem action is not that unusual, of all the machining procedures done to an action, the contour of the receiver ring and rear bridge are given the least attention. Murphy Precision (Hide Sponsor), has a detailed...

    Rem 700 or savage 10FP

Re: Rem 700 or savage 10FP The reason the Savage is more accurate is that the bolt head is pinned to the bolt body instead of a one piece forging as on the Rem. It was originally done for ease of manufacture, but regardless, it allows the locking lugs to fully seat every time. On the Rem...

Need an SKS barrel swapped out, it is threaded

Re: Need an SKS barrel swapped out, it is threaded I played around with SKS's about 10 years ago, swapping barrels, toying with different ways to mount the action to the stock, unitizing gas systems, all in an attempt to achieve greater accuracy. You can make an action wrench from tubing and...

Gunsmithing Looking for advice on a push feed M70

Re: Looking for advice on a push feed M70 I have a long action M70 that was originally chambered in .270, I rebarreled it in 6.5x55. Mounted in a HS Precision tactical stock with a single piece scope base, it easily shoots 1/2". I don't feel at a disadvantage, in fact, compared to a .308, it...

New to precision/LR shooting. What rifle to get??

Re: New to precision/LR shooting. What rifle to get?? I hate to buck the trend, but my vote goes for the Savage. I know there is a lot of hardware and history with the Rem 700, but a stock Savage will shoot circles around a stock Rem 700. The Rem can be worked over to improve it's...

Gunsmithing Western Field / Mauser 98

Re: Western Field / Mauser 98 That receiver was never a military issue, there is no thumb cutout for use with stripper clips in the left frame rail. It is probably a commercial Mauser, you could measure the action screw spacing to determine if it is a full length action. Most Mauser...

Please help w/ load info for a DPMS LR308

Re: Please help w/ load info for a DPMS LR308 The number of variable components suitable for your DPMS is staggering, the real trick is to eliminate as many as possible before you run out of time, money, and barrel. In my experience the order of importance is, the bullet, powder, primer...

    6.5x47 Brass Problem

Re: 6.5x47 Brass Problem The 6.5x55 uses a slightly larger case head and uses a No. 3 shell holder. The Europeans have always used the larger size, but US brass was smaller, the same size as .308/30-06. What is the parent brass for the 6.5x47?

Gunsmithing bed barrel, free float action???

Re: bed barrel, free float action??? I have done it with a 10/22 and a very heavy Douglas barrel, shoots great. With a .22 rimfire there isn't much recoil involved, a centerfire round would probably need a barrel block.

    4831SC for the 6x47L anyone??

Re: 4831SC for the 6x47L anyone?? I have good results with H4831 in my 6.5x55 and 139 gr. Lapuas, very consistent, decent velocity. I would think that it would be a good choice for heavier bullets.

    115gr. DTACs and Re22

I have switched from 107gr. SMK bullets to the 115gr. DTACs in my .243 Win. I am using Re22, but can't find data for the heavier bullets, can anyone share their experience with these components?

    multiple bullets / brass

Re: multiple bullets / brass The number of suitable bullets, cases, primers, powders, and seating depths available for the .308 is enormous. The real trick is to find an acceptable load without trying all of the available components. Try Lapua brass, Sierra 155 and 175gr. Matchkings, Varget...

    .243 vs .308

Re: .243 vs .308 +1 on new premium barrel for the Savage, 1 in 7 or 8 twist, 107 or 115gr. bullets.

    Reloader 25 Temperature Sensitivity (???)

Re: Reloader 25 Temperature Sensitivity (???) Onemoretime, For the varmint competition I use a standard .243 Win., 107 SMK,and 115 DTAC bullets, and Re22. For long range and tactical I use a 6.5x55 with 139 Lapua Scenars, and H4831, all bullets uncoated. The 6.5x55 is a great cartridge...

    Reloader 25 Temperature Sensitivity (???)

Re: Reloader 25 Temperature Sensitivity (???) The Reloder series rifle powders are double based powders, having more energy than standard single based. The drawback is that they are more temp. sensitive. I shoot Re22 in varmint matches here in So. Ca., but we get sighters for every relay, so...

Help with Lee collet sizing die

Re: Help with Lee collet sizing die Take the die apart, the main die body is tapered at the top, when it bottoms out it forces the split fingers into the mandrel. Clean or polish all the parts that make contact. If you have precision calipers, measure the mandrel and make sure it is smaller...

    Gunsmithing Too LITTLE Headspace?

Re: Too LITTLE Headspace? If it is a new build, I wouldn't worry. The lugs on the bolt and the barrel extension will lap each other and wear in quickly. I built an AR 10 upper with standard clearance, a year later the headspace was greater than I liked, I set the barrel back one thread to...

    fast vs. slow burning powders...question

Re: fast vs. slow burning powders...question While loading for the .45 ACP I experimented with most of the usual powders and bullet weights. What I found and was told is that fast powders burn completely before the bullet exits the barrel, giving very consistent, but lower velocities. The...

    Gunsmithing M700 squirming bolt

Re: M700 squirming bolt There is nothing really wrong, you simply have greater space between the bolt face and the face of the barrel. Usually .005"/.010" , yours is .020", with a case in the chamber the bolt is held to normal headspace. Sloppy, but safe.
