Load decision. Smaller SD or smaller groups

Also, keep in mind for future load development. If you’re a proponent of OCW and/or positive compensation load development, SD/ES matter far less.

Load decision. Smaller SD or smaller groups

For the time being, if you think that “flyer” was you, go with the smaller group. With the limited data you have, neither is bad on the chrono side. And neither groups are large enough to lose the match. But, take the smaller group as it *might* pick up an impact on a small kyl if you’re in...

Zero and Practice for positional/prs type shooting

This is my routine leading up to a match: Finish a match. Tear down rifle and clean completely. Next practice session I use the above method to zero and practice. Next however many practice sessions, the rifle should retain the zero or something is wrong with equipment. Typically my current...

Zero and Practice for positional/prs type shooting

So, I’ve been refining my zero method over the last few months. I’ve found that a surprising amount of shooters (myself included in the past) either don’t put enough time/effort into their zero or many times rush and hastily zero their rifle. There is also the almost always overlooked issue...

Advanced Marksmanship My compiled reloading problems and queries (Sorry to spew..)

Also, concentricity being a big concern is old information as well. Tests have been done over and over and as much as .010 runout (bullet and neck) hasn’t shown a noticeable difference out to 1k.

Advanced Marksmanship My compiled reloading problems and queries (Sorry to spew..)

You don’t have to agree with me. It’s been tested and proven time and time again. You’ll rarely find anyone at the top of their game not using a mandrel. Just like your assertion that neck sizing is more accurate. This is circa 1995 information and no longer valid. You may not be able to tell a...

Advanced Marksmanship My compiled reloading problems and queries (Sorry to spew..)

It’s not just the “terminology”. The process is different as the expander ball or button is pulled back through the neck after the bushing sizes it down. You also can’t control things as well as you can with mandrels sized in .0005 increments in conjunction with bushings in .001.

ISO: 6MM GT Reloading insight (Varget/Shooters World Precision, Barnes 112 and Hornady 108's, Alpha OCD Brass)

Run a velocity ladder (just to get an idea what powder charge gets an approximate velocity), from 31-34/35gr varget. Pick a velocity and adjust seating depth. It’s damn near impossible for any charge of varget to be bad with this cartridge.

Matchmaster Powder Dispenser | Save $100

I have one of these for large stick powder like n570. I’m pretty happy with it. Gonna be keeping my eye out for deals. Having several of these would be convenient.

    Reloading for Benchrest

Slightly misleading. They will narrow things down greatly in about 20 shots. Then they will fine tune in that narrowed down area. And they constantly test and re-tune. Real load development is not one and done and is constantly monitored for the life of the barrel. A single case in point would...

    Inconsistent seating depth

Just from skimming the post: 1: different initial sizing dimensions + the same mandrel will typically induce different spring back. Pin gauges would highlight this 2: mixed amount of firings + not annealed

How do you optimize your tripod?

I used to have plates like the pic above. But if shooting matches, when you’re walking stage to stage, the tripod with a head that has two or three items gets a bit heavy on the shoulder. Now, I keep my spotter and laser in my pack. Just put the one I need on at the time. Usually it’s the laser...

S/B FL Resizing & Neck Tension?

No, you use the bushing die and a mandrel. A bushing will more or less uniforms the outside of the neck and push the imperfections to the inside. Which is counterproductive. So, you use a bushing or non bushing die to size the neck down, then a mandrel to expand it. Which uniforms the inside...

S/B FL Resizing & Neck Tension?

It’s not a ploy. There are several valid reasons a small base is required. But using one when not required won’t hurt you.

S/B FL Resizing & Neck Tension?

He’s saying it won’t hurt to use the small base die. And since you don’t have dies, you can buy that and not take chance of needing to buy it after a non small base possibly doesn’t work.

    Neck tension-what's next?

I haven’t noticed any huge differences using a non bushing die without the expander ball and a bushing die. At least on paper or chronograph. Yes, the size mandrel you use to get the desired neck inside diameter is different. Working brass as minimal as possible is never a bad idea. But I...

    Reloading for Benchrest

The flip side of the coin is that your brass will eventually not fit anymore. This means the brass is constantly changing size (as it would either not fit immediately or it would always fit). If consistency is the end all be all (most agree consistency is about the most important thing) then...

10-Shot Load Development Results Berger 140gr Hybrids/H4350 - Where would you go from here?

I’d focus on things like your process. Things like making sure your brass prep is better as well as powder drop. The chrono numbers are indicative of brass prep and/or powder drop being inconsistent. The end result is data which isn’t reliable. With the chrono numbers posted, you’re going to...

    6gt

Has nothing to do what I was talking about. I’m referring to the size of the weight vs barrel contour and the effectiveness.

    6gt

The regular tuner still needs to be turned by smith. The tuner brake is an actual brake and the tuner on it is substantially smaller which can at times matter on larger contour barrels.
