Rifle Scopes Scope Rings - Potential Issue?

Re: Scope Rings - Potential Issue? Generally speaking, you want the scope as close to the bore as possible but not touching, and you want a good checkweld when you clear the scope at all magnification levels. As you've seen, "low," "medium," and "high" don't tell you very much, and some...

    AR-15 Failure

Re: AR-15 Failure I've had a couple of primers come loose and cause major (complete disassembly - mallet involved)malfunctions. Guess that dime I saved reloading brass with loose primer pockets wasn't my finest financial moment (although probably not my worst, either!).

    Suppressors suppressor pouches?

Re: suppressor pouches? M16 bipod pouches work well and mine was a gift from my Class III.

    Suppressors Yankee Hill Machine???

Re: Yankee Hill Machine??? I'm very happy with my stainless can, although it is heavy. The QD has always worked well, and if you get things a little tight you can pull the snap ring out and release it that way. YHM customer service has been good, too, when a "gunsmith" screwed up threading my...

    Gunsmithing brake madness!

Re: brake madness! I had a "gunsmith" thread a barrel for a can who must have been planning on installing something like that and apparently compensated for it. Nothing a few months of arguing, shipping the rifle and can off to YHM, cutting and rethreading the barrel, and pressing in a new...

    Rifle comb height help...

Re: Rifle comb height help... Tainted - the Choate riser works great for me, since I have the Choate stock. My scope is pretty low, so I had to shorten the riser. It is a fairly hard plastic but you can dremel or sand or even cut it to shape. No problems with bolt removal, but, again, my...

    Subsonic .308?

Re: Subsonic .308? +1 on the Sierra 180 grain round nose - they work great in my Ruger Scout over Trail Boss, and I never saw any instability regardless of velocity. Great fun to shoot, especially at a couple of hundred yards into water (at a steep downward angle, of course).

    Rifle comb height help...

Re: Rifle comb height help... I have a Savage with the Choate tactical stock on it, and their riser is pretty easy to customize for height, and the single screw holds it in place very securely.

    Rifle Scopes leupold zero stops

Re: leupold zero stops I used a garden hose washer, trimmed with an X-acto knife and sanded to the correct thickness. Took about 10 minutes of trial and error.

    Conflicting reloading data

Re: Conflicting reloading data If you want to experiment, follow the earlier advice to work your way up. I've seen significant differences in max loads in different books and I've seen significant differences in what various rifles are willing to put up with. I'm running a .270 load in three...

Sidearms & Scatterguns Ruger blackhawk 44, good idea?

Re: Ruger blackhawk 44, good idea? The 44 is such a versatile cartridge, I wouldn't worry about it. As noted, you can always practice and plink with 44 special loads. I prefer a longer barrel, and you might consider a ported barrel, but my 14-year old sons and my 110-pound wife love to shoot...

    Logbook Suggestions

Re: Logbook Suggestions +1 on Impact Data Books (you might take a look at the data / logbook thread near the top of this forum). Well-thought-out, pre-made or put your own together, good customer service. Franklin Covey has had some sales on a zip-closed 3-ring in camo that will fit, and...

    270 Win Powder and Bullets?

Re: 270 Win Powder and Bullets? I'm running 110-grain Sierra Pro Hunter soft point spitzers over Varget (more than I should probably say - work up to your own maximum) at about 3,400 fps for mule deer in three different rifles (a 700 my wife and I share and the 2 Savage Axis my boys have)...

    Question for long time shooters

Re: Question for long time shooters Rifle Basix makes triggers for the Axis - easily installed and a huge improvement. My two sons' in .270 shoot well under 1 MOA with several loads, and one has produced a number of sub 0.5 MOA groups (3 rounds at 100 yards - this is a hunting rifle).

    260 bolt gun suggestions

Re: 260 bolt gun suggestions You'll have more choices for scope bases and other accessories with the Savage, too. I had to build my own 20 MOA base for a CZ.

How to quiet down a 10/22?

Re: How to quiet down a 10/22? I find CB longs to be the quietest out of mine, largely because they don't cycle the action. Range is obviously limited, but just fine for backyard pests. I didn't find the polymer bolt stop pin to make much difference, but that may be subjective.

Rifle Scopes Ruger Scout Optic Options

Re: Ruger Scout Optic Options For what it's worth, I have the XS rail on mine and run the following: - ghost rings w/ standard ammo and no suppressor - dot scope in scout position w/ subsonics and a can - cheapo 3-9 for standard ammo w/o the can - Vortex 5-15 (the Midway mil-mil special -...

Rifle Scopes 308 scope rings question (height issue)

Re: 308 scope rings question (height issue) Since the actual ring height for terms like "low" and "medium" can vary significantly between manufacturers, and not all vendors list actual heights, I have decided the best approach for me is to set the scope on the rifle using clay or stacks of...

Rifle Scopes Millett TRS1. The test begins...

Re: Millett TRS1. The test begins... As I browse through another item comes to mind based on my experience with my MIL/MIL version. A full turn of a turret is not an even number of mils. If memory serves (I'm at work, and having my rig sitting on the desk would be frowned upon) a turn is 4.5...
