Gunsmithing Question about POF 308 marking up brass

Re: Question about POF 308 marking up brass This can often be improved upon with patience and elbow grease. Most .308 size semi's eat brass to some extent. Do you have pictures? Define "destroy brass" are we talking unusable? I don't expect to get the same brass life from a semi that I do...

    Gunsmithing Test Indicators

Re: Test Indicators I was just reaching for that brass ring and all I got my hands on was this damn banana! I missed the banana reference last night. Now THAT is funny. Maybe I could get it bronzed and replace the operating handle on my QCTP??? Time now to experiment with...

    Gunsmithing Test Indicators

Re: Test Indicators OK, thanks for the replies. Had to work late today and am only into my first beer. At least this one isn't foamy. I am thinking about this and can appreciate that zero runout (or at least as close as possible) does not directly correlate to improved accuracy. There are...

    Gunsmithing Test Indicators

Re: Test Indicators I already have the indicator I spoke of previously and would like to purchase another one. The cost difference between that and a quality .001 or .0001 indicator is nominal. I may order up a $1000 test indicator and post pictures of it on my G4003G lathe to see just how...

    Gunsmithing Test Indicators

Re: Test Indicators I have had good luck with Noga brand mag bases. Not too spendy but solid as far as I am concerned. Having the fine adjustment at the base rather than the carried end helps too. Hard to make a fine adjustment right next to a .00005" indicator; if you look at it mean it moves.

    Gunsmithing Test Indicators

Re: Test Indicators I have a B & S 7033-5 (black face) and was looking into getting a second indicator but a 7033-3 (white face). Are there any internal differences to justify the extra $40 or so in cost? If they are the same I can live with two black faces sitting on the carriage. Anyone...

Re: Next Las Vegas Precision Tactical Rifle Match Man, I might have to go out and buy a multicam skirt if it makes you shoot like that... Good job Hugh!

Gunsmithing Sand blasting with a smaller compressor?

Re: Sand blasting with a smaller compressor? The baby compressor will work if you let it "catch up". This means you must stop blasting frequently to let the compressor maintain pressure of 90 and make sure pump/motor do not get too hot. I have done this previously and other than being...

    AZ TPRC 2011

Re: AZ TPRC 2011 Loads of fun for sure. Thanks to Scott, Tim, Gina, Steve and all of the other RO's. Big thanks to the many sponsors. Now time to tend to fun things like cleaning the pool and reconfiguring the wireless router that went down right after I left town on friday leaving my wife...

Las Vegas Precision Tactical Rifle Match 2/5/11

Re: Las Vegas Precision Tactical Rifle Match 2/5/11 Big thanks to all of the "others" who stepped up and helped : Dave, Mark, Randall and a few others whose names I can't remember. As our match turnout grows it becomes much more difficult to keep things running smoothly. I do think the recent...

Gunsmithing B prefix 700 action with smooth bolt knob?

Re: B prefix 700 action with smooth bolt knob? Thanks for the replies. I have not seen one like that previously. I don't want to get stuck with one of the weird variants than can not be rebarreled or is incompatible with 700 accessories. The rifle had a pretty nice walnut ADL stock and the...

Gunsmithing B prefix 700 action with smooth bolt knob?

I located a possible donor action Rem 700 LA in 30-06 with a B prefix action. The side of the action says 700 but it has a smooth or non-knurled factory bolt knob. I have only ever seen rem 721 actions like this. The last 4 of the s/n matched between the bolt and action. I have other Rem 700...

An open letter to Match Directors and Competitors

Re: An open letter to Match Directors and Competitors The match director can not predict every level of stupidity that will be thrust upon them. Those that have never run a match might not appreciate this. The real question a competitor should ask themselves is do I have skill and integrity...

Gunsmithing Advantage to over sized Recoil Lug?

Re: Advantage to over sized Recoil Lug? Extra thickness in the recoil lug helps the smith by providing more room to release the half nut when manually threading the barrel too. At least I appreciate the extra play room.

Gunsmithing Follower binding in my stock remington

Re: Follower binding in my stock remington Could be lots of things. Are you sure that you have the correct follower for 308 and are your rounds too long (COAL)? Also are the spring and mag box sitting properly between the action, stock and floor plate? I have had a few BDL's where feeding...

Gunsmithing How many grooves do I need?

Re: How many grooves do I need? You need at least one groove for each land... Jokes aside that 14 twist seems a little slow (at least I have never seen a 14 twist in .243 bore. A friend has several 3 groove barrels that are serious shooters. I don't believe that # of grooves impacts...

Gunsmithing Getting the same chamber in two rifles

Re: Getting the same chamber in two rifles Using the same reamer is the most important part. It would be helpful but not necessary to chamber both at the same time. If chambered at different times then you would want to have the chamber headspaced "the same", ideally just above minimum.
