Lightweight, heavy cal hunting rifle thoughts?

If you are set on a Lapua boltface cartridge like the Norma (which is an awesome cartridge - I have an improved version), I would build on an action with 1.125 tenon diameter. Something like the BAT HR/Vesper, or Borden Bigfoot LW. If you want all the performance you can get out of that...

How is 7PRC better than 7 Rem Mag?

I have no idea what Hornady uses, but VV N565 is readily available and gives basically identical velocities as RL26. It is also less temp sensitive. For my money it's a better powder all around for chasing max velocity.

How is 7PRC better than 7 Rem Mag?

Any number of wildcats beat the RUM. 30-338 Lapua Improved comes to mind.

Hell yeah! Love me some '06. What bullets are you going to shoot?

    .338 barrel length

As far as velocity goes, 3k fps in a standard Lapua is not realistic (at least not safely). My Lapua improved is a max capacity, min taper design with about 12 grains more capacity than a standard Lapua, and I am right at 3k out of a 30" barrel with N570. RL33 will get you another 50 fps, but...

    .338 barrel length

Not enough room for the 338 AND the Barrett.

    .338 barrel length

The practical tradeoffs of going over 30" are not worth it in my opinion. E.g. transporting the rifle, finding cases that fit, etc. 30" is already LONG, add a brake/can and things start getting ridiculous. A 30" Lapua will get you all the velocity you would ever need to well past 1000m. So...

    Carbon Barrel cracked??

Magnus is not a 338 can. But regardless, 1/2-28 on a 338? That leaves less than 60 thou of material around the bore. No thanks.

    Carbon Barrel cracked??

The reason I choose carbon wrapped barrels for a hunting rifle is to have enough meat at the muzzle for threading. On a 338 with 3/4" threads, you are pretty much limited to truck axle barrels, and carbon saves you a couple pounds. If you don't care about threading for a can, stick with steel.

Want a Tikka Arctic but cannot make a decision between 308 and 6.5 Creed

Those rifles are bad mfers. I came this close to getting one in 308, but decided it was a better idea to have SAC build me one to my specs for 3x the cost. I have issues. I chose 308 because I think it hits harder 250 and in, which is my chosen range limit for the platform. No question 6.5...

Hunting Rifle: 7mm Rem Mag or 7mm SAUM?

I've never had trouble controlling headspace on a belted cartridge. If anything, that is the one thing the belt is good for!

Hunting Rifle: 7mm Rem Mag or 7mm SAUM?

I am shooting a 7RM with a 27" barrel and a custom throat that puts 180 Bergers at 3.56" COAL at 10 thou off the lands. With ADG brass and around 72 grains of N570 I am in the 3040 fps range with outstanding brass life. I could go even higher without trashing the brass but I found better...

338 Lapua Ackley Improved questions and request for load data

It has less to do with more meat around the chamber (although the increased hoop strength doesn't hurt) and more to do with the ability to fit larger bolt lugs. The tenon diameter limits the size of the bolt lugs. Most companies that build a .590 Lapua bolt face action also increase the bolt...

338 Lapua Ackley Improved questions and request for load data

To clarify, this will be a super heavy bench only rifle, yes? I shoot both 338 Lapua Improved and 338 Norma Improved quite a bit. If you are going the Lapua Improved route, you are clearly chasing maximum performance. In my opinion, I would consider a beefier action with 1-1/8 tenon threads...

    338 Lapua AI Build Advice

I am stuck in analysis paralysis and need some expert input on a new build. I want to build a lightweight (within reason) 338 Lapua AI for a dedicated elk hunting rig. I currently shoot this cartridge in a 25lb bench rig and am 100% set on the chambering. Probably shoot a combo of 300...
