    Variation in load data?

Re: Variation in load data? What made me start looking at data was some marks on my case heads when using a load with 43.0gr of Varget and the 175gr SMK. It was a load I had from when I had a bolt rifle. The marks looked like ejector swipes. I have since found that my rifle is notorious for...

    Variation in load data?

Re: Variation in load data? I found at least one reference showing Sierra using Federal brass and Hogden using Winchester.

    Variation in load data?

Re: Variation in load data? I am loading the 175gr SMK. I started with 43gr of RL-15 and noticed shiny marks from my ejector on the brass- I am using Federal brass. I have since been told that Federal brass is soft, and that my SASS tends to chew up brass. That is why I looked for a lower...

    Variation in load data?

Re: Variation in load data? I have always been taught to go by the book and never exceed published load data. I know they change data over the years due to slight changes in powder, bullet design, etc. Since the data Hogden has on their website would also be considered to be published the...

    Variation in load data?

I have been working up a load for my LR308 SASS. I have noticed a large difference in load data between my Sierra manual and Hogden's online data. My Sierra book shows a starting load of 36.3gr and a max of 41.7gr. The Hogden online data shows a starting load of 42.0gr and a max of 45.0gr. C...

Range Report Tried testing loads- tell me if I wasted my time

Re: Tried testing loads- tell me if I wasted my time I took it out again today. It really likes 41gr of Varget. .2gr above or below the groups were around 1". At 41 it shot a cloverleaf under 1/2" at 100 meters. I think I have found my load.

Range Report Tried testing loads- tell me if I wasted my time

Re: Tried testing loads- tell me if I wasted my time I think those loads are for a bolt rifle. They seem hot for my SASS. They are also far above my Sierra book's max. How old is that data? Loads do lose validity after time.

Range Report Tried testing loads- tell me if I wasted my time

Re: Tried testing loads- tell me if I wasted my time I had a problem today while testing a load. It started not feeding, then the bolt did not move after firing. I could pull the CH to the rear and eject the case then feed a round, but it had become a bolt action. This evening I took it...

    Ejector swipes from my SASS?

Re: Ejector swipes from my SASS? About the Federal brass. I traded with a guy a while back and have several hundred Federal cases, so I will be using them for a while. After I use them up I will go with Win or other good brass.

    Ejector swipes from my SASS?

Re: Ejector swipes from my SASS? I was worried that maybe the load was too hot. I used 43gr of RL-15 and a 175gr SMK. That load is similar to the M118LR, which I think I remember as being what I was trying for. My current Sierra manual shows a max load of 41.7 for that powder and bullet. I...

Range Report Tried testing loads- tell me if I wasted my time

Re: Tried testing loads- tell me if I wasted my time I only loaded 5 rounds of each- total 40 rounds. That was to give me an idea where to concentrate.

    Ejector swipes from my SASS?

Re: Ejector swipes from my SASS? When you say yours eats brass- what does it look like? Is it the marks like mine? I shot more today. Out of 15 rounds 3 had the shiny mark from the ejector. If it's just the rifle I won't sweat it.

Range Report Tried testing loads- tell me if I wasted my time

Re: Tried testing loads- tell me if I wasted my time Sorry Top. I was shooting at 100 yards. My club has overhead baffles that extend the full width of the range- about 75 yards, spaced about every 10-15 yards. We have walls on each side about 20' high made of RR timbers that run 200 yards...

Range Report Tried testing loads- tell me if I wasted my time

I had time today to go test some loads I am trying to work up for my LR308 SASS. It was windy today, and in our range the wind swirls due to the walls and overhead baffles. I had a couple of loads with 2 different powders that showed promise. I need to know if trying this in windy...
